I am only 30. I do my own work. But I been doing concrete and construction since I was 17. Unfortunately, my lower back has already been starting to be an issue just last year. Just constantly lifting and tearing out concrete and thinking I’m on top of the world. Now I’m careful on how I rake, and how I screed. Walking around and moving and stretching definitely helps. Sucks, but I guess it’s part of it and have a long way to go and have a family to support.

KNEES! My last job, a young fella was workin with me. I jumped off the back of the truck, screamed (as usual). He got scared, I was probly old enough to be his Grampaw! He said, You OK? I said Yeah, that always kills my knees. He said "well, why don't you stop jumpin off trucks!?" Where was this guy 40 years ago! Probly wouldn't have listened anyway. Wear those knee pads, Mike! Nice work, Mike and crew. I'd say your shoulders may give first, but everyone is different, so who knows. I gotta have my knee pads when I hand finish concrete. They're of vital importance to me. Have you ever had problems with tendonitis from doing concrete work Mike? I've got it in my right elbow tendons and it can be very painful, especially when it first started bothering me. It's been about 3 months and, knock on wood, I think it's starting to try to get better. Talking about pulling up chuncks, I absolutely hate it when you get a burnt out, slick as glass finish with a troweling machine just how you want it and when you go to remove the machine from the slab, the blades pull out a big @ss plug of finished mud. Then, you gotta scramble around and find some grout that isn't hard as a brick bat and put water on it and put it in the hole to make it look decent. It rarely turns out ideally, but we're all picky with our finishing anyway. I've tried all kinds of things to avoid the dang machine blades pulling those plugs out and it's not always an issue depending on a lot of factors, but it sure sucks when it does happen. Any tips you've learned to keep that from happening?
@MikeDayConcrete Жыл бұрын
I try to slide the machine before I start it to keep the blades from sticking. Works sometimes but had a big chunk stick the other day, floor almost done. Got it filled but was a pain. Some concrete sticks more than others, just a day by day thing.

Mike - In a couple of your videos now, you've mentioned adding accelerator in the winter (calcium chloride?) but you've also included wire mesh or rebar. Have you had any issues or concerns with corrosion? I know most accelerators will corrode steel embedded in concrete. Thanks for another great video!
@MikeDayConcrete Жыл бұрын
I've never had or heard of any issues using CC on any of my jobs, been using it 42 years in Maine.
@lachlanitis2311 Жыл бұрын
Yes it does, it breaks the bond between concrete and steel allowing oxygen to the steel thus rusting the steel out. It's completely banned in Australia now and a lot of countries. There are different accelerators that don't corrode steel, CC should not be used in any concrete.
@74stevedc Жыл бұрын
@@lachlanitis2311 Yes its called excellerator non chloride typically a liquid added at plant, doesn't work as good then goes really quick in final hour at finish.
@lachlanitis2311 Жыл бұрын
@@74stevedc you need different accelerators then. We use sure set and they work great. We can get a polished finish by 4pm on a very cold day. If you know about the detrimental effects of CC and still use it you need to re-evaluate your concreting practices.

Power trowel is tricky, luckily we had a guy who has used them many times before.
