A trick I use to do, was cut the tread off an old Tyre and it fit inside my bike tyre which thorn proofed the wheel.
@johnb90053 жыл бұрын
I also did this but found that the edges on the cut tire used as a liner caused holes in the inner tube eventually. I suggest wrapping the cut tire in an old inner tube to protect it from the rough edges of the cut tire that is used as liner.

I really enjoyed this video! I am over 60 and cannot drive a car because of macular degeneration. a bicycle is my only transportation. I am always getting flats because of this spikey burr that is on my alley. i have been looking for something like this! Thank you for sharing this! Keep up the good work!
@mwj53682 жыл бұрын
Hi Roger! I was diagnosed with macular degeneration about two months ago. The exam report said something about my being in the 12% range which I didn't look up. They prescribed a very expensive vitamin combination called PreserVision Areds 2 that is $37 for a bottle of 120 soft gels that is supposed to slow it down. I don't notice any visual effect yet. They gave me the brochure with the checkered pattern test to be alert of change and go to ER if the pattern skews. I see halos around lights at night but was told that's my cataracts gradually forming. For the macular degeneration now they want me back in 9 months instead of the former 12. The doctor was in a hurry as always and went. Is the 12% range mean it's all minor? I made copies of the brochure to mail to all of my siblings. Our late mother had it and had the laser treatment at about age 86 and never had it at 68. I have no driving restrictions but can't afford a car and commute by bike and city bus. I'm thinking it's hereditary. Is that true? I know this doesn't relate to bikes but thought I'd ask. I am concerned about it on and off and get into denial. I take Alreds two times a day as prescribed. By the way, did you hear that swish sound when Mike Fede did the ride test with the Armour guard installed? Have you used it?

It's good to see the over 60s people riding bikes. Ebikes or pedal assist bikes are great for the older folks. Cars are borderline slavery these days. Not even borderline, they make you a slave. A bike is freedom. 👍
@mwj53682 жыл бұрын
@@datner76 Hi Nick! You're right on! I had to junk my car with 280,000 miles on it in 2017. I had been commuting by bike and sometimes 2 weeks would pass and I didn't use it and also took a lot of people in my Senior high-rise shopping, Dr. appts, ER etc as random acts of kindness. Once I didn't have a car I lost all my friends and had a great feeling of liberation not owning a car. I can't be places I want to be sometimes but really an overall great feeling of liberation. I hear some bicyclists say, "I'm car free!" ha!

I used Tannus Armour on my front and rear tires and still got flats. One of the flats was caused by a small metal shaving. The Tannus Armour is thick but it compressed down to about 1/4 of an inch after I rode the bike a few hundred miles. I was not able to ride a short distance with a flat tire as Tannus advertises. Riding with a flat tire would have damaged the rim. Since putting on Schwalbe MARATHON PLUS MTB HS 468 mountain bike tires, I have ridden over 4,000 miles without a flat. They are thick enough to not get a flat if an object as long as a tack is stuck in the tire. I also used the compressed Tannus Armour inside the Schwalbe tires for extra protection. The Schwalbe MARATHON PLUS MTB HS 468 mountain bike tires are much heavier than standard tires, but the protection is worth it to me.

@@michaeljohn7467 I have had Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTB tires on my mountain bike for about a year and a half. I have ridden over 4,000 miles without any flats. They are thick enough to prevent flats from objects the length of a tack. I also have used the Tannus Armour at times for extra protection. I also cut the stem out of an old inner tube, and put it between the inside of the tire and the inner tube that is inflated instead of using the Tannus Armour.

We recently bought two new extremely heavy Riese and Muller E-bikes from Germany sporting Schwalbe tires and took them on a 200km journey. We got three flats and had to end the trip about 10km's from home in the back of a van. Fitted the Tannus liners and have since done nearly 2000kms in two months with zero flats so far. Can't recommend these bad boys enough

@russelpieper43492 жыл бұрын
UPDATE. I knew I read it somewhere, so I got out my Tannus installation guide and on page 3 under Tips For Installing Tannus Armour it states (It is common for the Amour to compress over time. It still is providing shock absorption and puncture resistance but will perform better when properly maintained. To minimize compression deflate the tires while not use. This allows the Armour compound to rebound to provide ideal performance.) So does that mean when your not riding your bike, your suppose to let the air out of the tires? I'm sorry but that's not happening. I don't know how everyone else feels, but if I would have known that earlier, I would not have purchased the Armours.

Suggestion Mike. It's a GREAT video, by the way! When doing the puncture test Try Some nails in a piece of wood *(2 X 4) or *(Piece of plywood with a bunch of nails) to roll over with the tires on various bikes = 29'er - 27.5'er - bike park bike. Puncture test. I don't think the drill does it for natural presentation in real-life situations. After rolling over the nails, glass, or other debris found on a trail or parking lot pavement, which you could line up in an eastrough for a house to ensure a 100% probability of a tire puncture, it would be handy to have ready a squirt bottle of soapy water solution to verify 100% quickly if there are any leaks. * The audience would catch that you are not playing around with making sure the audience is kept in the loop instead of trusting your judgement of using the auditory test. It has nothing to do with your not being trustworthy. You are a very trusting guy just to be doing all these wonderful videos! Thanks! I'm relating the topic of trust to the LOST trust in many things we purchase nowadays. I believe people are very leary. Humans often try to pull the wool over each other using deception, distraction, and deceit regarding marketing tactics of various products sold in all stores. So much of what humans do is all about money as the driver or motivating way. *(off-topic but relative about trust) The pandemic was the #1 validating happening to give everyone an awakening. A jolt. An astonishing aftershock. To show, as people awakened, that our systems were broken centuries and centuries ago, from the very start. This will gain the trust of your audience-not that they don't like you now- your videos are GREAT and informative! Truly are! I'm just trying to help with critic of the presentation. Last suggestion. It would be advantageous to have a digital scale to weigh the various tires *(state the brand type etc. ) with and without the insert of the no-flat insulator inner liner. In this manner, racers, weekend warriors, mountain bikers, and backpackers can readily gauge the importance of weight added to any race or bike-packing trip. Lastly, no offence, but the video should focus more on the test itself and not include so many extra things. However, it did add to the natural authenticity of being live on location. Nice work on the rescue! Good job! I do first responder work myself at MVA and MVC accidents. It's Called Accident Scene Management. So GOOD stuff! I believe ~ the focus is on tire puncture resistance. This way, the video is concise and to the point-no frills type thingy. (Y) Right!? I'm just saying. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Future suggestions for videos. 1. Show the importance of matching the tire with the rim for quick flat changing during a race or a touring ride when a storm breaks out. The rain or snow starts coming down right when you need to fix a flat. I believe ~ The importance of matching tire and rim can not be understated. Some riders are so concerned about getting the proper tire for the riding and the terrain that they, I believe, forget to match the ease of the bead going on and off during flat tire repairs, side wall repairs, and tire changes. Maybe some do that in the racing area? 2. Sidewall repairs ~ Would be nice to see for testing. (Y) thumbs up. 3. Testing Hydrophobic coatings on the market. For mitigating mud on the bike. And the processes associated. That might be a tough nut to crack? ;) 4. Durability of various tapes used on the market. This is especially applicable for bike repairs. I'm presently using Gorilla tape, for example, for a breached sidewall right at the sewing or stitching on a Schwalbe Ice Spike Pro. Two years of constant year-long riding are my test. 5. When to use a Dyno-hub vs using batteries that add extra weight. Advantages. Disadvantages.

I use tannus armour on my mtb, being a heavy rider it means I can lower my tyre pressure and definitely does improve grip off road. Only had one flat in the last 9 months. I did find installing it more difficult, I had to use tyre levers. Top tip, be very careful not to pinch the tube with the levers! Though next time I will try your method of putting the tube in the armour first then putting the whole thing in, I put the armour in first then the tube and it was tricky getting it all to sit properly.

No punctures yet. It is the most thin at that part but the majority of your flat tires are going to come from surface area. You can put a little bit of extra rim tape to help prevent that if that is an issue for you. The inserts are definitely a great added protection not just for the tire but mentally knowing that you’re way less likely to get a flat tire when you are nowhere near a bike shop.
