I show how to DIY motor swap a Harbor Freight Predator 212cc engine into a mini bike, dirt bike, motorcycle. This bike is surprisingly fast with the 6.5hp/ 7HP hemi engine and CVT TAV 30 series torque converter transmission in it! This motor swap is a common upgrade for go karts but is easy to install on a motorcycle too. I have even seen this swapped into trucks and cars. This is a simple project that can easily be done over a weekend with a welder and angle grinder. There’s also a xr100 with a BBR big bore kit motor swapped cr80 in this video. In part 2 I pull the governor out of the engine and I installed a stage 1 kit into the predator motor, and even do a little spring adjustment to the CVT.
Here's some Amazon associate paid links if your looking for some of these parts. CVT torque converter amzn.to/2IySo3V
CVT torque converter amzn.to/2Wzmz4I
Both of these Torque converters fit 3/4" engine output shafts (predator 212cc engines have 3/4" shafts) and both kits come with the 40 pitch sprocket (this was the same size sprocket i modified to fit my chain pitch. I hope this helps you guys out.
Here's the jet and air filter kit amzn.to/2FlU67Q
Here's the Tachometer amzn.to/2WWqmZZ
Here's the curved tube I used for the intake runner amzn.to/2IWveV9

I agree with other people just imagine all the old bikes with a blown motor that can be resurrected with a $100.00 HF predator motor! I just purchased one of those belt drive CV units for around $50.00 on amazon! For $200.00 and a day of fabrication and welding your out riding! Awsome video

Best budget mods you can add IMO. Black Mamba Jr. cam from smallenginecams, a gx160 head for higher compression ( I buy cheap ebay knockoffs), timing key, 91 octane for higher compression. I do recommend getting a billet rod, billet flywheel, valve retainers, valves that fit the new retainers, and 26lbs springs. most of that stuff you can get from ARC racing.

I built a predator 212cc and use a billet aluminum flywheel. I have seen what stock flywheels do when used with no governor. Besides the billet is less than have the weight too. Don't forget also to install a billet aluminum connecting arm. These are designed to use with a performance builds with no govenor as they are stronger. Just a little food for thought. Great video, you smoked him easy. Too cool! Can't wait to see more.

It's great to see someone actually making a bike work well with these small 4 stroke engines. We've built a number of Karts and mini bikes using clones and have not yet used a Predator engine but they do seem to be a step up. With off the shelf parts, they are an easy engine to modify as are the clones from the vast amount of companies who put their name on them. I think I will get a 212 predator and give it a try in a moped, scooter type bike we bought online that does not seem to have any history or background to find anything about it anywhere. It is an odd shape with unique features. We were told it was made in China in the 1980s or 90s but that's all we know.

Yes this little bike has been a lot of fun! The predator 6.5hp seems to be a good motor, I have one on my home built log splitter and it always starts first or second pull! There’s a lot of hip up parts available for these engines as well, for the $100 on sale I would definitely recommend trying one out 🙂

I have been out of the small trail bike business for 45years.and since I regretfully sold my 69 Penton. It was one of the early Pentons........I was hankering to get a new toy and bought an old Kaw 100KE but it has a trashed bottem end. I am getting ready to do a similar swap after seeing your first video. I am hopeing that I will not need to cut the frame to get the motor and cvt in. I am also worried about the foot peg issue. The swap actually looks to be a neat swap other than the bulky CVT. Too bad just a simple clutch is not a good option to eliminate much of the bulk. This whole Idea of these preditor swaps hopefully will revive many of the old trail bikes that have been abused and not maintained. Great videos....Keep up the good work.

It is nice to here some calm, smooth music while watching you work. Much better than cranking the heavy metal (which has its time and place.) On the governor removal: do you need to plug the hole on the flywheel side and if so, how? Also, what about an aluminum flywheel, I hear that is safer with the extra RPM generated. Thanks, nice video. My guess on new top speed, 55 mph.

Thanks for checking out my videos Dave! I found the replacement belt has lasted a lot longer then the original one that came with the CVT, I’m still running the replacement belt, I do plan to install a lager rear sprocket, this will help the belt last longer because it will fully engage at a slower speed, it’s the slipping on and off throttle at slow speeds that I think takes its toll on them. The stock flywheels are cast. All cast iron flywheels are known for exploding over a certain rpm because the porous metal starts to lose its shape, flex, and crack. That being said ive only ever seen internet dudes explode them ive never personally had it hapen. I suggest getting the ARC billet flywheel with 32* timing built in. Run it on 93 octane it should like any cam you throw at it. I am in Indiana so our tuning greatly differs. Nice channel by the way, you have a subscriber. By the way if you lap the billet flywheel to the crank your using you can use it for years on any 212cc so not a bad investment.

I'd reccomend the stage 4 kit from GoPowerSports.com, but if you're short on change get the billet rod. Predator engines have a little scooper on the stock rods that splash oil around, and they have a tendency to break off and go through the block at high RPMs.

They're referring to the actual metal flywheel. The metal fatigues, develops micro fractures, and eventually let's loose. And when it does, your engine is toast. I did a 212 on a 1980 rs175, same way you did. But my engine is a stage 2 with billet rod and flywheel. Well worth the money!

Honda GX 160 with an old motorcycle carb installed. When I did that the rpms and response went through the roof. Lots of fun. Also: You can "turbo" charge this engine as well. It requires an automotive high speed squirrel cage blower fan out of any cars firewall. The fan that's responsible for air coming out your vent. Enclose that fan in something like a power wheels plastic tire and pipe the pressure into the carb. Then hold on for one wild ride..... It works...lol

Had a predator on my drift trike . the flywheel does self destruct , I've had it happen the magnet flies out of the flywheel and ripped the coil completely off the engine , the difference between the stock flywheel and the billet is the magnet actually stays in the billet and they spin up faster ,light weight, rated for 10,000 rpm.

I had a predator with 18lb valve springs a mod 2 cam no governor and a port job. I had it on a gokart frame and the stock flywheel came apart at about 5 or 6 thousand rpm. The shroud slowed down the shrapnel and the back of the gokart seat caught the rest. I've turned stock flywheels to 5000rpm and above and never thought it would happen to me but now I put a billet flywheel and billet rod on everything.

These Harbor freight 212 predators are Pretty impressive I have the same Engine on My Little Baja Minibike I have the stage 1 but I didn't Remove the Governor yet I think it would over rev at about 35mph right now and So I'll wait till I have a CVT for that, it's got alot of Power! I'm wanting to go the size #40 chain and CVT route because this #35 chain and Centrifugal clutch Is stuck in a lower than Preferable gear and stretches the chain everytime I do a launch haha I like these Builds I saw a Guy put one of these 212's in a Old I believe Toyata pickup and would actually drive around But I think the 420cc is probably better for that.

@UnEqual Reality The one on the carb? Most engines that are designed for generators or pumps etc have a Governing screw near the carb so that it doesn't over rev but I didn't see one on this engine And it Gets Up to the rev limit so I think it's the internal rev limiter not a fuel restriction Is there another screw? I'll have to take a look again when I have it out of storage

You'd be better off staying with the 35 chain because there are more sprocket options. If you get a quality 35 chain it could easily handle 212 power. Others have done it. If you really want a bigger chain go with a 420. They work better with the CVT than the 40. The fat 40 chain will increase the possibility of chain strikes to the driven pulley and make alignment less forgiving.
@thatguy9890
@thatguy9890 3 жыл бұрын
@@Deucealive75 That Makes sense. The size #35 I have uaed stretches pretty bad Though! I think with a CVT the #35 would do better because It will shorten the axis from the Crankshaft output and the Rear sprocket and I think that the chain being streatched out that far end to end And having that Center leverage on it might play a decent part in the chain stretching so much. But I'm not sure, it just seems like it would.

If you are burning up the belt it's because you're asking too much and you are over geared. If you put a larger rear sprocket on the whole bike's going to behave better and never burn up a belt.

Yeah but he said to comment if it's happened to you. I in fact build these "junk" engines and I've been using the factory flywheel on my own personal one for about 7 years without it "exploding" lol all you have to do is make sure the magnets are re epoxied to the flywheel. The glue they use isn't the best and let's the magnets go that kills the flywheel. So speaking from years of experience their not junk. You just have to know exactly what your doing 😉
