I’ve watched Real Sociedad games for a while and Merino has always been one of the standouts, not only is he a physical player but also a really smart one. He will definitely play in that left 8 role for Arsenal as arriving late to the box is one of his strengths, kind of like Gundogan. Another thing he is also really good at is quick switches from one side of the pitch to another, which Arsenal is lacking right now, this will make Arsenal’s left side more threatening than ever

A good measure of Merino's impact would be if he were to score 3 more goals than Rice did last season if he plays regularly (so 10 ) and gets Martinelli back up to his 22-23 total of 15. That would mean a total boost of 12 extra premiership goals over last season. Defensively, he should be worth maybe 3 points (turning one loss into a draw and one draw into a win). Those sorts of numbers could make the difference between 2nd and 1st.

Excellent video, weird ad at the beginning. I agree with your opinion on how Merino would help the players around him get better. In fact, I really do think that was Arteta's intention of signing him. A 28-yo who is a hardworking midfielder with no star-power who's prime is going to last for at most 2-3 more years? Yeah, he's a signing for the NOW. Unlike Calafiori (who I believe will replace Big Gabi by January) and Timber (who will be our long term LB option), Merino will be expected to impact immediately. The fact that we got tired by the 3rd quarter of last season shows how important it is to give Rice some much needed rest and a quality cover for Partey. I know you still want another forward. Initially I didn't think we would need one even if we sell Eddie. But with Jesus crocked again, we are quite light at the top. Unless Arteta thinks putting Nwaneri on the wings and Martinelli up top is a good idea. Or if we revisit this in January. But all in all, I am excited by our signings. Every Gooner knows we need 3 signings at which positions, we got 2 of them and exactly who we wanted.

It's wise to keep expectations in check, but I believe this signing will prove to be more transformative and significant than it currently feels. Maybe even more than other blockbuster names. He fits perfectly into the left 8 role, allowing Rice to rest (conserve energy during games and to take some games off entirely.) Additionally, his ability as a progressive passer is often underappreciated because it's easy to overcalibrate for his modest pass success percentage. With higher-quality players ahead of him, this should address a key problem we've been facing.

Mikel hoping Mikel will fix the issue that Mikel has created. White covers the issue on the right to an extent as he does overlap Saka on the wing to allow Saka to cut inside. MO8 will not provide the same benefit on the overlap with him being left footed. Timber isn't going to provide that overlap on the left as he is right footed. Rice isn't as he is right footed. Martinelli has literally no-one to go out wide to allow him to cut in. I also see Calafiori signing as a potential way to fix the left hand side issue.

I disagree on your take saying the left footed Merino will unlock martinelli, as far as i see nelli just isn't playing well. Last season, nelli's poor form could be explained away by havertz being in the left 8 and their skill sets weren't compatible. However this season Even in pre-season lots of attention was given to the left side, more rotations activity etc, even with rice closer to him and offering himself as an option nelli is still ineffective. Maybe arteta was right about him, maybe martinelli has plateaued, remember how arteta was hell bent on getting a left winger in the last couple of seasons. Anyway here's Hoping Martinelli gets back to his best.
