So I’m currently going to A&P school and every time I watch your videos I recognize something I’ve learned about, for example I’ve worked with composite and micro balloons and it’s cool to see them being used. I’m done with the airframe side and now on to power plant and hearing you talk about oil temp because of viscosities and cooling, well shit I just learned that last week! I also have a love for off road and swing king shocks being used on your long travel tail wheel is so cool! Keep up the killer content and never stop rambling cause I’m always pulling something away from your videos.

I was thinking the same thing. My crappy home built race car had a thermostat on the additional oil cooler. I wonder if a thermostat reduces flow significantly, therefore not suitable for his high HP application?
@thomasaltruda
@thomasaltruda 4 жыл бұрын
Most aircraft already have one, called a vernatherm. But they still seem to let oil flow to the cooler a little in my experience. Putting a door on the oil cooler is best, and it may allow the cooler to get warm enough so oil doesn’t congeal in the cooler on cold days. Maybe he could put an automatic function on the servo motor, then it can adjust itself without him trying to chase it!

In addition to a little manual control, why not add a little micro-controller and a temperature sensor and have the oil cooling adjusted automatically? Would be very little and simple code and weighs almost nothing. :-) If that system ever failed, you could fall back to your manual control, but otherwise you'd never need worry about it. One less thing to think about when flying. :-) -Daven

Mike you rock, have you ever considered an oil thermostat vs the variable air restriction? I'm a car/M-bike mechanic and I'm just considering for the first time.. yeah a restriction on the oil system like a standard coolant thermostat spring increases pressures in the rest of the system don't want that.. an effective oil thermostat would be some sort of diverter valve BYPASSING the oil cooler and right back into the engine when the temps are low, controlled by temp switches.. or a more advanced system by Arduino and electronic valves (probably don't prefer that on aircraft). Anyway keep it up brotha!

For the oil cooling, you could even automate the process with PID control. You could have it where you set a temperature you want to be at and it could actuate the flaps to different degrees automatically. You could have a switch to turn it on so that it doesn't close the flaps when cold starting too

I'm really enjoying the Scrappy build series. I can't wait to see the finished result. One minor correction though: the vertical stabilizer on a commercial airliner is sized based on engine-out conditions, not by its cruise airspeed. Consider the thrust differential if one engine on a 777 fails on takeoff (i.e. max thrust, relatively low speed). The yawing moment would be enormous. The vertical stabilizer must still maintain stability.

Mike, it is great to see what you have been up to, you are such an inspiration to me, and I’m sure many others around the world. As one who has been actively involved in aviation since the mid 60s, I have never encountered anyone with energy and passion you have shared with us all. Thanks, and may God continue to bless you and your wonderful family, thanks again !

Hi, Mike. Thanks for the update on the situation of Draco, and revealing the new white canvas DracoX. We look forward to your new Draco build, and the continued building of Scrappy. Question: Wouldn't it be more efficient to move the oil coolers up front by the new large cowl flap to eliminate the extra weight of oil to keep the oil coolers full and functioning at optimum flow? I've learn so much from your channel about building and renovating aircraft. Thanks again for all of your efforts to produce the videos and sharing with us.

I learned so much from this video. Most everything we learn has an application beyond the first intended use. Thankyou,
