I like learning about it but have no real personal experience with aviation outside of commercial flight. But as a metal fabricator and hot rod builder I must say I love to watch him build. I have learned a lot about molding fiberglass and carbon fiber as well. A lot of this will transfer right over. So she must have some kind of interest in the fabrication so that is really cool. He puts out some good clean content good for anyone who wants to broaden their mind. Glad to hear you got something to watch with her.

On the gust lock pin, when you put it into the home position in the cockpit with the micro switch, what stops it falling out if you find your aircraft inverted? Also I assume that if the pin were missing only prevents startup, and wouldn't cut the engine out if it were accidentally removed from the cockpit. (Like the cutout switching a motorcycle stand, not a condition youd like to find yourself in in mid flight)

Hi Mike. It was an honor to meet you when you and Draco were at the Alaska Airman’s Show in Anchorage last year, and watching your videos has motivated me to take another step closer to having my own plane. I’ve started an experimental PA-18 build that should be completed by the time you bring Scrappy up to Anchorage to see us next year. Can’t wait. I’d just like to add something on a more personal level, that I love the way you interact with your family and how much you appreciate the people that surround you. Loved the segment that showed your (beautiful) wife helping you with the fabric, and in this segment with them getting out of the river after the rafting trip. As a UPS 747 pilot I am well aware of life without family, since we’re without them about half of our lives. Anyway, I love watching your videos while I’m on trips and I just want to thank you for helping us along on this journey of General Aviation flying, and particularly in the experimental realm. You are an inspiration. Keep it up. Respect! 👊

Cole Aviation unfortunately for you, Oshkosh may be shut down in upcoming years, the NAACP, ADL, and SPLC have all identified it as an implicitly white social gathering without minority representation. These are no longer allowed under upcoming federal regulations, and diversity quotas must be met for any gathering larger than between 200 500 people is what’s being negotiated now. Black Lives Matter, your time of aviation-based white supremacy is over.

I don’t build airplanes... I build sculptures and architectural structures... but I want all my apprentices to watch these videos so they get a feel of how In Depth you have think thru complex systems. A comprehensive understanding of the materials and forces involved results in a comprehensive design, well worked out. The little things like body parts that snap together, Planning for conductive isolation, Thinking about how the water will get out and how a metal tube filled with a hot liquid gets Longer... You see it as he assembles it, but realize that he must have planned for that with his initial drawings. And perhaps most importantly, that thinking this way is Not a Chore... but an infectious enthusiasm and a pure joy that comes from seeing something you thought out in every detail go together and work exactly as you envisioned. Every CAD designer and 3D modeler ought to be required to BUILD the things they design. ( at least for some years ) It makes them much better ( and more valuable ) designers.

Another comment said this was a masterpiece and I agree. The attention to every single detail - the finish on the carbon fiber, the fit of the metal tubes on the front landing gear, the way the fuselage was laid up on the aluminum to leave just the right amount of space for the isolators, painting the names and tearing out each individual little hole in the D's and P's, the microswitches to make sure the rudder lock is not only out but inserted into its storage location...it just takes such tremendous dedication to do a project this size and still chase all those little details. Absolutely blown away.

Most people would simply put on a dust mask. Mike builds a state of the art clean room. My only other comment is why not put the HEPA filter unit outside of the room to reduce the ambient noise as well as not taking up bench space. Granted there are fans producing noise but it would reduce some of the extra decibels. Now Mike, you need to wear ear plugs when doing noisy work. I wear hearing aids in both ears because I didn't wear them on the flight line when I was an F-4E weapons loader in the US Air Force in the 70's. I love what you've done to Scrappy.

@@Asta-wl8jz If it 's just on the starter circuit, then no, it wont stop the engine running. The only issue I guess would be if the engine stops and needs to be restarted in flight, and the microswitch has failed. Very unlucky circumstance, but you have to think of everything lol. I'm sure he's already thought of that, but if not, a time delay system could be one way round it. Once the engine is running, the microswitch doesnt do anything. Once the engine has stopped, you've got say 10mins until the microswitch becomes active again. Or you have a fail open microswitch, which would allow you to start the engine when the switch has failed, but could allow you to forget to remove the pin if it failed on the ground. Just thinking out loud haha, bit extreme really. You could fill the fuselage with safety systems to prevent this and that, but that just means there's more to go wrong lol.
@ebouwman034
@ebouwman034 4 жыл бұрын
JustUsFlyers I’m with you on the whole added complexity thing. If it’s interrupting the starter like everyone says then I’d feel safer... but I feel that doing a proper preflight and following multiple check lists should give ample opportunity to notice that the rudder isn’t moving. What I’d rather see is a warning light.

It prevents smoke, grease, heat, and kitchen smells from getting into the dining area. I also add a few dozen CFM to the vestibule airlocks to push flies outside.

Keep in mind too much negative may compete with the bathroom fans...or any boiler, water heater exhaust.
@ryanmcgowan3061
@ryanmcgowan3061 4 жыл бұрын
@@deanmiles3505 Definitely a concern, and for more reasons than you'd think. Restrooms are near equal static pressure, slightly negative. It's a small volume and too much negative pressure in the bathrooms can cause air to be sucked out of the P-traps, and then you're pulling sewer air into the restroom. (If you walk into a terrible smelling restroom, try pouring water in the floor drain). I sometimes used two air grills on opposite sides of a wall or connected by a small duct to control airflow without creating suction.

Ryan McGowan another solution to dried out floor drain traps is after filling with water put ½ ounce of baby oil on top. Twice annually is usually good. This problem occurs more in warmer climates. I’ve lived in Asia for 20 years.

Ahhhhh........ wow........ I put a lot into my little Weld & Hobby work space but then I look at what you did........so......... as the Sun rises today I'm, as you say, It's "Back to Work" for me .... I see from what you did some ideas that I'll have to put in place also ,... the exhaust fans in the wall at the end of the bench, fantastic idea, (cutting' holes today) ........Aluminum Diamond plate wall backing, nice touch and I know where to get some.............and I'm going to upgrade my old shop lights to the new cool & bright LED............ so much to do but I'm kinda focused now. Thank You for the great video, "Scrappy" is looking better & better . Stay Well, Fly Safe

Sort of makes you wonder why there are so many mundane aircraft around if one guy can put together a succession of amazing looking AND performing planes the way Mike has. His total costs are minuscule in terms of what corporate R&D usually involves, and it sort of makes them look bad.

Honestly, this is the most amazing on-going documentaries I have ever seen. (You should really turn this into like a 10 part mega-documentary, cutting your intros, but keeping all the detail.) That said..... I am a bit befuddled, which isn't rare, but.....you haven't talked about the wings....I believe ever. Given the level of attention to detail and mega-safety and performance so far, I can only imagine what the wings will be like. Watching you do the wing mods on Draco was amazing and I can only imagine what will go into THIS plane. Even just a little teaser would be cool..... So, Mike, Wings? .

He's such a tease! He hearts this comment but stays silent... I've been wondering what kind of over the top crazy is going into the wings as well. Last couple videos I've been wondering if the reason for the long breaks is because he's out actually flying it instead of sharing the story!!! It really is a beautiful machine, a real work of love and art.

Mike hasn't mentioned it. I'm guessing it is still in the skunkworks being perfected. I am expecting something longer, wider with variable slats and flaps with built in beverage taps for after flying parties. He also mentioned more horsepower. If he only had a turbine engine sitting in a box somewhere.

Then this thought came to me. You know when you come up with a clever solution for a household problem and your wife tells you how smart and awesome you are? Well now when my wife of 46 years says something like that to me I just say, you ain’t never watched a Mike Patey video have you? Beautiful work Mike, you are a great example in so many ways.

Once again I am blown away by the incredible level of engineering, craftsmanship, and artistry you put into this plane. But I have to remark that when you first started the concept of "Scrappy" built out of "scrap" parts I did not expect it to end up being this incredible custom plane! Not much scrappy about it anymore.
