Regarding the l-bracket issue. Smallrig l-brackets are designed to accommodate flippy screens. While details vary by camera model, the common elements are a gap in the back end of the vertical piece, plus the ability to move the vertical piece further away from camera body, further forward on the camera, or whatever combination may be required to achieve your preferred viewing angle.
@JohnJones-xy9pg
@JohnJones-xy9pg Жыл бұрын
I bought the SmallRig L Bracket too and agree it can be used with the flippy screen, the only downside is too it is when you go from landscape to portrait orientation there's not much for the area Swiss plate to grip onto it at the bottom.

thanks for the effort and the sharing. i found your vid very informative and helpful in my decision making. i use a A7R3 for my landscapes but really do not need the 42mp for my event work so i'm thinking about a A73 with it's 24mp. in your experience, does the A73 have any effective tracking capabilities in photo mode? thumbs up.
@ivotouart
@ivotouart Жыл бұрын
I'm confident that there's an L-bracket for this like the SmallRig X-T4 L-bracket which has a slot in the side portion of the bracket where you can shove the screen and rotate it a bit.

But it still gets in the way. Having a gap is still a compromise over what the flippy screen is intended for, but thanks for your thoughts. 😁👍

Here's a tip, I bought the APS-c 70-350mm Sony G lens for my A7IV as a hiking lens. It is ultra light and small yet gives an amazing 525 effective zoom and a roughly 18MB picture at 4608 x 3027 thanks to the 33 MP sensor. I have the Sony 200-600mm but it is far too heavy for most uses.

It all depends on your budget and what you are going to be using it for. I would start with the A6000 series of camera. IF you have a small budget, the A6000 can be found really cheap second hand. If you have a bit more to spend, the a6100 is a good option. If you are looking at the A6600, you might as well go for a second hand A7iii as you would be spending about the same amount of money. Also, tamron and sigma are offering much more budget friendly lenses these days.

I got to the Display Quality Setting in 16 (3 if I use the touch screen) on my A7IV (drill down, move right)...menu structure works for me (becomes intuitive over time), but I didn't need to unlearn a previous menu scheme. You still have the absolute BEST photography "how to" content I've found - Planning, composition, execution, Hardware...Yada Yada Yada; I do wish youtube had a Favorites Channel Flag), although I could "Save" a single video to a category, and back into it. Thanks... (Glass is King!)

Hi Mike great video as always, bought my A7111 years ago based on your advice and l love it. I pared it up with 16-35mm f4 at the time I would really like to upgrade to the 16-35m f2.8 one day. What I'm asking how is the A7111 up against A7iv for night shots sunset and night photography landscape which would be 70% of my work. I'm very happy with A7111 for low light photography most video tutorials have always said A7111 is one of the best for low/night photography with my 20m f1.8?

Hi Phil, Great to hear you are enjoying the A7iii. It is a great camera isn't it ... I still can't quite make myself sell it ... probably because it has been such a workhorse for me!! If you are happy with the A7iii, then there is no need to change it ... I'd spend the money on the GM 16-35mm instead. However, if you are struggling with the megapixels of the a7iii, or it feels like there just isn't quite enough for your editing needs ... then it would be worth upgrading ... however, it is only an incremental increase in specs for photography (that doesn't need high speed focussing systems). If I didn't shoot these videos, I'd have waited for the A7v and spent the money on higher spec lenses. I hope that helps Thanks for watching 😁👍

The A7iv would be a great upgrade from the pentax. The autofocus is great when the subject stands out from the background. Great comparison, Mike! I've been mulling over this upgrade but the potato quality rear screen really turned me off. I do shoot quite a bit of moving stuff and it'd be really nice if I could get a general idea if I'm completely missing focus or not without having to zoom all the way in and pan around. I can see how for photography a7iv is a solid upgrade over a6000 series camera but I regret switching to A7iii from a6500. Too much weight, the body, the lens are massive and expensive. @@X99Zero certainly makes sense if your not shooting video professionally. I do shoot hybrid professionally so Im just keeping my trusty D750 for photo work. But I looked back at my paid video work over the last 8 years and thought I really don't need or want full frame for that anymore. My 2 most used focal length in video are 24mm and 50mm. Hard to believe one must scroll through all menu page items to get to subsequent pages - gotta be a shorter way. (Love your choice of comic music, BTW.😂) When you exit the menu and then return to it, are you “placed” at the same point? No matter the menu struture, IMO, one gets used to it. Thanks for sharing. I'm a hobby (mainly) landscape photographer and use a Canon 6D Mk.2. The flippy screen of that is more useful as I can rotate it fully into the cavity it came from. I do find the dynamic range and higher ISO performance poor despite using Topaz denoise. I'm looking into Sony A7 for my next camera, either the III or IV version. This is valuable input for that decision which won't happen this year anymore though. For screen viewing you can buy a simple 'LCD viewfinder', a rubber sleeve with lens you can use to review your photos or live-view so the ambient light or glare doesn't affect the experience.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts Bartjes, I used to have one of those LCD viewers a long time ago for my Canon cameras when I used to shoot a lot of video. They are very good, but with these Sony cameras, the resolution is a lot lower so you still don't get the full use out of them. From the 6Dii, you would definitely see a drop in resolution if you switched. I have a video planned in the future on the dynamic range of the A7iv ... and I might include the A7iii as well just to see if there is that much of a difference. Looking at the stats, the A7iii has a DR or 14.53 and the A7iv is at 14.7, so not that much of a difference ... the low light capabilities of the two are similar ... obviously a little better in the A7iv, but only marginally. Hi Mike. Many thanks for the great hands on out in the field feedback/review of the A7IV as compared to the A7III! You provide great insight into photography technique and gear as always in so many of your videos! I imagine the difference in image quality between the A7c and A7IV is even smaller with respect to landscape photography as A7c has updated AF algorithms compared to the A7III. What would you say is your preference if you can only take one body out when hiking/backpacking? A7c or A7IV? A7c being smaller and lighter and having better battery life… A7IV having more megapixels, much better EVF, more custom buttons, better video features, dual card slots, touch-screen with pinch to zoom when reviewing, even better AF.
@tsizzle
@tsizzle Жыл бұрын
Oh, btw some additional follow up questions. I know you said you like to use the A7c to do your videos. Do you use Slog2 and color grade afterwards? You mention that you do use Catalyst Browse to stabilize from the gyro data. I’m wondering what is the more ideal approach…. Since, we have to film in a higher shutter speed for Catalyst Browse, we might not be able to follow the 180 shutter rule for video… on the A7IV, is it better to use the Active Stabilization (with crop) (not available on the A7c) and not having to deal with additional efforts with post-processing in Catalyst Browse and additional benefit of being able to follow the 180 shutter rule and film at a lower shutter speed?

'Enjoyed watching your channel for the first time! I use the Sony a7riii for landscape and have really enjoyed it. Recently, I've been focusing less on upgrading, but advancing my photography skills and knowledge. However, I do invest in high quality lenses. I recently read a short book called "The Lesser Photographer" which dealt with our gear obsession. He pointed out that most of the more renowned images throughout history were shot with what we would consider poor equipment today or are blurry to some extent. His points being that our obsession should be more on the story and composition of our photo than the actual gear that we use. There is no question that gear matters (dynamic range, etc.), however, I am now focusing more on getting the photo right and less attention to updating my gear.

Hi Mike, I've moved from an A7 Mk1(2016) to directly a A7RIII (2018). Until there, I've not seen any need to migrate towards the IV generation. As landscape photographer, like you, I like multiple megapixels. With 42MP, this allows a big crop and simplify the setup to bring. I mainly take the 16/35 and the Tamron 70/180 and I cover almost 95 % of images. With the big matrix and the possibility to expand the image with softwares like Topaz, the need of intermediate 50mm and also my 100/400 (sigma) is less necessary. As you said, lenses are more important to get a photo. So investing there is key. I hope you'll be happy with your new gear and I'm looking forward for new videos about your passion...

My two cameras are a7riiis. Love those cameras. For landscape, I usually take my Sony 20mm f1.8 g, Tamron 28-75 G2 and 70-180. Images are nice and clear. Like you, I use Topaz to expand the image if I cropped a bit too much. I've owned the Sigma 100-400 twice, but it just didn't seem sharp enough on the long end when shooting between 350-400mm. The Sony 100-400 is beyond my current budget. But just love the 70-180!

I got the L-Bracket for my A7Siii I like the flippy screen for portrait view panos mainly. As far as both settings I think identical for jpeg and for raw only would be a fair compare. But for info now you can adjust several jpeg settings for a raw images in Sony edit section of its editor like the hardest and only effects jpegs is "D-Range optimize" and it saves as a raw. It was like going from my A7s to the A7iii using AWB at night on the A7s captured atmosphere atom colors when doing Milky Ways but had to use daylight setting and cool of on the A7iii. I have two A7iii's one for the FE 12-24mm f/2.8 and the other for the 24- 240mm, and yes through the years have got most every lens Sony makes but have learned the hard way that TODAYS Software is key to any capture not so much the lens (as a hobbyist). Also good for color and exposure the datacolor spydercube or just setting with the grey dome.

Thanks for your thoughts Echo. I purposefully put the images up with mo post processing on them, and also linked the files in the description so people could look at the RAW files for themselves ... like you say, it is all about the software these days ... and I think as time goes by, it will come down more to computational photography and processing of the images. It is frustrating the way Canon did that ... It really doesn't make sense ... I know they are trying to keep people using their lenses, but it is a bit of a dick move, and people like yourselves will start to move away from their system. I changed from Canon to Sony about 6ish years ago now and it was an interesting change ... frustrating at times, but I didn't really look back once I got used to the new system. The A7iv is a great camera and the focussing system is so good. For anything moving, it sticks to it like glue and with 33Mp, it is a compromise between the normal 24Mp cameras and the super high megapixel cameras. Thanks for watching 😁👍

The biggest bump in my photography right now has come from getting a nicer computer, Dell XPS 17 with a 4k display and dedicated graphics. It's always difficult to decide whether an upgrade on a camera is worthwhile, the marketing guru's will have you believing that your photography will improve massively if you buy the latest and greatest, yet we all know that this is rarely true, as you say, some new glass or a course may be of more benefit. But that 33mp sensor is a good size, not too big to make file size unwieldy yet big enough to resolve more detail than we can see with the naked eye. I still use the A7III and I've been thinking about upgrading for a while now. I sometimes shoot pics that require good and snappy af so the A7 IV would be better at that. But for landscapes I think you can use any camera you want, even 5 year old camera's do a good job at that. I have to say the images on the IV look better than the III, but nothing post processing can't fix. Anyway, I still didn't upgrade because the slight increase in MP, AF and a flip screen doesn't justify the increased price tag for me, not to mention the more expensive cf cards for storage.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography Жыл бұрын
You're totally right about cameras for landscapes, the changes are marginal and you could shoot with a much older camera and get very similar results. I purposefully left the images unprocessed in this video (probably should have mentioned that 🙈), so you can see the difference in what comes out of the camera. As for the memory cards, I still use SD cards. I found I needed a V90 SD card for the S&Q timelapses in 10 bit 4:2:2 but that was the only thing I needed to upgrade to the faster SD card for. I'm staying away from the more expensive cards for now, but it is good that they have included the card slot to kind of future proof it a little. Thanks for watching 😁👍

It’s not even close. Maybe I’m weird but I don’t understand your L bracket complaint. You can keep the screen in the same position as the a7iii. As the a7iii is a lot older, it'll be a lot cheaper, especially second hand. But if you want to get the most up to date camera for future proofing, the a7iv is the way to go. I must admit I'm veering toward the RF6 MK2 but will probably stay with Canon. The RP can stay as a back up / use when circumstance is right for a small light setup/where wide and shallow is needed. Even away from the expense of two systems I doubt I would remember the functionality of another system as I won't use things enough, as a purely seldom heavy-use hobbyist. Even with my RP I'm fine after a morning (well OK light hobbyist way v you)...........I have some older EF lenses....Or maybe go with APSC which is probably bang on for much of what I want and maybe Canon won't then be best.....Decisions.....

Thankfully I didn't had to buy the A7IV. The only reasons that I have found that could favor the A7IV over the A7iii was the new EVF and the higher resolution. In the end, 500€ is a big chunk that buys better glass. Couldn't care less about the camera when I was able to buy the new Sony 24-70 GM II for a great deal.

After watching this video I decided to buy the A74. I have the A73 and really like it, but it's no good for photographing birds or other wildlife. After watching Mark Galer's video, I understand that Sony has included many of the features from the Sony Alpha 1, which I cannot justify buying, into the A74. The advanced focus tracking alone seems well worth the price. If all I did was landscapes, I would agree with you.

1) Where the heck is there a Sony shop? I need this. 2) I do think the composition was a little busy. A tight-ish crop on the hut near the center would be my preference. 3) I know this doesn't exactly address the issue at hand, but memory/recall settings can help. Maybe setting M1 to portrait, M2 to landscape and so on (I learned this from Mark Galer) can help you easily and quickly lock in an array of reasonable settings so at least you get the shot. 4) Thank you for the videos, especially the a7iv review that makes me feel a lot better about sticking with the a7iii...for now. Edit: Something weird happened; this comment was intended for a different video (the one about mistakes we make in the field). I notice issues from time to time when casting to Roku.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography Жыл бұрын
Hi Cassidy, In most big cities, there will be a Sony shop ... You're right with the memory recall settings. The only thing I don't like about those is that if you come out of them, when you go back into them, it resets to what you initially had it at, so if the conditions change through the day, you will have to keep changing them... Great to hear you got something out of this one. Thanks for watching 😁👍
@CassidyHansen

@@mikesphotography Thank you for the feedback. I know what you're saying about memory settings. It definitely doesn't fully solve the problem. You may have noticed my reply didn't seem very relevant. I watched a few of your videos back to back (your end-of-video hook to your next video is very good btw), and somehow even though I was watching and commenting (or so I thought) on the video about the mistake we make in the field regarding settings, my comment landed on the a7iv video...very odd. It may be a buggy consequence of casting to Roku? Who knows.

Hi sinner...😛😛😛😛😛 I am very happy with my a7III, I do not need a flip screen, I do not do sports photography, and I hold family and friends with duct tape, the only thing I would like to have on my a7III is the possibility of changing the color of the focus point , for the rest there are some of the examples that you show that seem the same, others that the difference may be due to the shadows of the clouds during the change of camera, for the rest... I'm with you it's an update for professionals. That if... you will have to take turns the support of the camera in the backpack, otherwise your shoulders will be unbalanced... 9 megapixels more is an extra weight! Greetings.

People alway complain about the menus on these computers. It's like complaining about all the switches and dial in a Boeing 737. If you know what you're doing, you know you need them all. I agree, the old menu, the new menu same fish different side. It's digital. If you want to lose the menus get a Pentax 67, Leica M6, or go whole hog and get a 4x5 large format camera. It's still just as difficult, but analogue and not digital. 🙂 I bought the A7iv mainly for shooting my videos for YT, and it was a big upgrade form the Fuji's I was using.
