This video just saved me a hell of a problem. My pc was built by a store (I only chose the components) and i updated my bios so all the settings were restored to default and pump fans went crazy. I had no idea how the cooling was connected and Google/YT were of no help. After explaining 3pins=DC and 4pins=pwm, I checked the specifications of my cooling and boom problem solved. Thank you alot and please keep these videos coming ❤️ love from Kuwait 🇰🇼

Long comment but for anyone out there who this can be useful for: Recently upgraded my PC, still new to PC building and this upgrade was my first time using anything more than stock cooling (I got myself an EK AIO Elite, because why not). Got a Ryzen 7 5800X and an MSI B550 MAG Tomahawk with a 3070, and was blessed with the beloved red CPU light after I put everything together. Fans spun and lit up *quietly* and all was well but no post! A tech at Microcenter was able to figure out that it was a loose PSU cable apparently, and the PC boots now but surprise!! When you power the PC on the CPU light still turns on, but goes away after a few seconds, and then the fans start REVVVVVING at about their 100% just seconds after for a while, and were revving heavy on and off for a while until I was able to come across this wonderful video. Still nervous about my PC, I have a feeling I need to repaste my CPU perhaps, but we shall see. It might be hot, and it doesn't help that Speccy won't show me temp readings because it just says AMD K17 many times again and again. Will be fiddling around in the days that come hoping to get the current ambient temperature (55 C according to the BIOS) down to around 40C-45 C, or anything less than 55 C. Haven't figured out how to check thermals under load but we'll see what I do... This PC build project has taken much longer than I would've hoped (still waiting to get some screws that were missing from the EK AIO, missing an exhaust fan at the moment...), but this channel has actually had a video for EVERY since issue I've come across so far. My personal favorite PC channel on the internet, thank you so much Mike and good luck to all of you that encounter any roadblocks!

You should not have to go into your bios to monitor thermals. Google a compatible hardware monitor for your pc. I GUARENTEE your problem is the fact that you has a POS motherboard (nice and cheap/old too).... and are trying to use a 3070 on it. Also, your cpu is now about 3 generations old if not more, so you could be bottlenecking your GPU via your cpu AND motherboard. SCARED TO EVEN ASK ABOUT RAM, SSD AND PSU...

Hi Mike, I'd highly recommend Argus fan software. You can do a demo but it is a paid software, you do get a licence for two PC's so works out about £5 each. The thing you can do with Argus is control the fans from whatever heat source you want, so if you got fans directed to the GPU ie: below, or for gaming the GPU will be the hottest point to control. You can also do a duel heat source, ie: CPU and GPU so depending on which one is hottest that will control the curve. I haven't found any other software that can give control of fans from the GPU that is easy to use. Also compatible with all not locked to just one motherboard. Hope you have a look and don't mind the comment, would make a great video for you to do. Thanks you.

Hi, Mike. Thanks for this video, and the others you've done covering the MSI BIOS. After using Macs for the past 13 years, I'm doing my first PC build in many years for my new music production system. I've ordered an MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus, and will be using it in an NZXT H510 case; I'll also be using Arctic P12 PWM PST fans. I recently saw this about the H510 online, and it got me thinking: “One thing I will say about airflow in the 510, put the 2 fans as exhaust, no front intakes. This is contrary to most popular info, but it's not an ordinary situation: that case works far better thermally in a totally negative setup, especially for the GPU.” With that in mind, is it possible to completely disable fans in the MSI BIOS? Ideally, I would like to install the two intake fans at the front of the case and test it out, and then just disable them if they do indeed cause problems. Thanks!

What is the point of configuring it in the bios if you're going to end up controlling it in the software? Is it basically incase the software goes down the bios settings take over?
@mikesunboxing11 ай бұрын
it gives the software the correct settings for PWM or DC control before the software loads, you can do either but both seems to work better in my experience

Soooo. I googled MSI Center fan control to make sure MSI center includes manual override of UEFI fan curve settings if needed. Behold my main man Mike's video came up. So I was helping someone troubleshoot an issue as we were installing some old IPX to TCPIP emulation software, the venerable "kali95". This software still has many uses including monitoring of various game servers in real time, and file transfer. Of course it also does what it was built for very well... run IPX only games over the internet. The installer FAILED to run for him. I had this issue on my MSI rig but I did a work around. I did a work around for him as well and got everything squared away. But me being me, I NEEDED to find out what prevented the installer from completing it's run. An installer should show up as an "app" in Task Manager, and this installer was stuck as "32-bit Setup Launcher (32 bit)" as a Background process. On my other 2 machines, the installer ran fine. It was time to interrogate my MSI B450 system for the cause. My first suspicion was something unique to this systems Windows environment and that was verified after running Win10Pro in safe mode (F8... "bcdedit /set {current} bootmenupolicy legacy" FTW!) and the installer ran fine. Back to Windows 10 normal boot and time to start hunting for the culprit. Looked at my extremely short startup list and killed potential causes like Logitech Gaming Software and Afterburner. What must have been my 3rd try was CC_Engine_x64.exe. Stopped this process and the installer that was sitting in Background processes sprung to life as an APP and the installer wizard was presented. CC_Engine_x64 resides in the Dragon Center directory. Figures MSI has failed again with this wretched software. I've been waiting for months for OpenRGB to work right with MSI on board ARGB controllers (it works kinda OK, but effects all show wrong) so I can dump this garbage, but I still use it for the effect on my fans that I haven't been able to simulate with OpenRGB because of its issues. So, yes, I may finally give MSI center a try. I run the NON-UWP version of Dragon Center and the ability to remove garbage like CFOSSPEED is not available in my version. I found other means to mitigate that extra garbage. I'm going to see how things work disallowing CC_Engine_x64.exe to run at startup for science. I wouldn't be surprised if it's not needed unless you actually need to run Dragon Center and use the UI. One more MSI hate message for the road: During this deep dive, while milling through Task Scheduler where I like to weed out hidden crap like Adobe update checks and other trash. I noticed MSI has a scheduled task called "MSISW_Host". This triggers "muachost" that MSI sticks into your C:\Windows\SysWOW64 directory. Research suggests this file comes with MSI Afterburner (I didn't verify, but likely it does). I stopped this process and wouldn't you know it Afterburner seems to still run without issue. GPU/CPU temps remained in my systray and Afterburners UI continued to display my GPU and other system data real time without issue. Googled this executable a little to try to find out what it does. Multiple results suggest it can record keystrokes and mouse input. Well that's just GREAT! If true of course... So that's my rant. I'm going to backup my PC, then try the latest pipeline builds of OpenRGB and then MSI Center and see where I'm at. Asus and MSI make some great hardware, but good lord they are the worst software developers around. don't tell me Afterburner's so good I'm pretty sure Guru3D made that with MSI's blessing. Yeah I coulda made a KZbin video about all of this but I'm an inarticulate moron. Instead, just rant to my buddy Mike who fights the good fight. Transparent open source software is often times the best thing out there for us. Wish I was well off to donate to the cause. Rant complete. F-U-MSI. 😎

@@mikesunboxing Testing the latest pipeline build for OpenRGB right now. They ALMOST got it! The Effects Plugin doesn't work right, but the integrated effects that come with the stock version of OpenRGB do work now! The only problem is I cannot isolate an effect like marquee to just the fans. Either everything is static, or it has to follow the effect if anything on the mainboards controller gets that effect. Marquee looks fine on the fans, but annoying on my other LEDs. First world problems baby! 😆

Hey Mike. Question: Would I still be able to control each separate fan if they're connected to a 1 to 2 PWM splitter? As the motherboard I'm planning to get is an MSI z690i Unify, and it only has 3 headers for fans, but I plan on using 6, so I decided to just use 3 1 to 2 splitters to accommodate all 6 fans.
@mikesunboxing2 жыл бұрын
no splitters and hubs just replicate the signal to all the fans and it shows as a single fan in the bios or fan software

so a bit confused, I set my fan speeds in BIOS and have Dragoncenter which I like to set my RGB's on my motherboard and AIO fans. So if I get MSI Center do I need to match the fan settings with the ones I just set in BIOS? You mentioned how BIOS usually overrides the other settings on MSI Center.
@mikesunboxing2 жыл бұрын
msi center is a replacement for dragon center but works in a similar way. If you setup the fans in the bIOS first, then fine tune them in windows after that works well. soon as the pc turns on it will use the bios settings, after you login to windows and the msi center starts the fans we revert to the msi center settings and speeds

Hello Mike, thanks for this tutorial. I cannot find a way to adjust the step-up-time in MSI Center. This feature is only offered in the bios? In the bios there are only three options and I hoped the MSI Center being more flexible, but there seems to be no step-up-time-feature at all. Do you know more about it? Cheers.

@@mikesunboxing In the Bios it is called "step up time" and "step down time" (in my bios on the left). You can choose 0.2, 0.3 and 0.7s. Btw, in my MSI Center (newest version) there is no "CPU Fan". I have no option to adjust fans! MSI support is informed and I wait for the answer. Maybe it's due to my PC model (Creator P100A 11-TD), where MSI doesn't want it or I have the wrong MSI Center.
