I’m Assyrian from Northern Iraq. We are among the first Christians and we still speak Aramaic which is the language that Jesus spoke. Anytime someone came to the house, they’d get oil on their head. I can relate to the story with the alabaster flask and an anointing with oil.

Hi! Is there any historical origin of anointing people? I understand it's a religious act but to someone who's outside of the middle eastern culture, it seems obscure that rubbing oil on someone's head is an holy act. If I don't know anything about Jesus and I saw someone does that, I would immediately assume that it's provocative.
@truthseeker4470 Жыл бұрын
@陳查理 it's actually a very common Christian act. Nearly every liturgical Church (Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, etc) uses oil in Confirmation. A lot of Charismatic/Pentacostal Churches use it as well, but not tied to a particular "Sarement"). FWIW, the Greek term "Christos" or Hebrew "Mesiach" (Messiah) both mean "Annointed One" in their respective languages. Kings in the Hebrew Bible were also annointed with oil. So in a way, anointing with oil goes to the very heart of Christian history.

Oils are some of the earliest forms of rubs, with various benefits and the anointing is many times simply rubbing or massaging a soothing ointment or oil. Pretty good job on the analysis. Something to consider is that the Passover generically consisted of a week long event beginning at the 10th of the month and ending on the morning of the 18th with a Passover feast on the evening of the 14th. If you consider that John is dating from the feast and Matthew and Mark are dating from the beginning of the Passover week it works out perfectly. For more info on this perspective, study Exodus 12 and 13 and Leviticus 23

KZbin suggested this video to me. I was just finishing my "final" round of proofreading a work in which harmonizing the Gospel stories is important. I had mistakenly followed previous harmonies which included Luke because of the similarity of the stories. Due to my tent-making work, I'd been unable to quite complete it over the last few days, during which your video remained on my mind. You convinced me, in the nick of time, that I needed to rethink this vignette, and upon a closer look, these are plainly two different events in two different places. I recommend EW Bullinger's Appendix 97 "THE UNITY OF THE FOUR GOSPELS." It comes with a table. Excerpt: "After what has been said in Ap. 96, and in the notes to the Structure on p. 1304, it would be out of place to attempt to present anything like a complete "Harmony"; but, in order to show how needless it is to dislocate certain passages in order to bring together similar events and discourses (supposed to be identical, as though nothing the Lord said or did was ever repeated), a condensed outline is presented. It will be noted that there are great events which were never repeated : such as the Mission of the Twelve, the Transfiguration, the Dividing of the Garments, &c. These help us in determining the order and place of other events which, though similar, are not identical. From the outline given below it will be easy to see how the several accounts of similar events and discourses are distributed in the several Gospels, without violently altering the sequence of verses and chapters, as is done in most so-called "Harmonies".

Essentially the only question I ask is their evidence of a god existing, and the majority of them won't present a single thing that convinced them a god exists. (The others just present one of the typical arguments for god, all of which make well-known mistakes, and so none of them are actually reasonable evidence of a god.)

When this came out I'd only been a Christian for about a year and I was definitely still in that place of feeling like I needed to have the answer to everything or my faith had no foundation. The advice at the end of this video really helped me become aware of that problem at the time. I'm happy to notice that, coming here the second time, having actually found the answers to most (but not all!) of the questions, I've indeed learned to stop caring about whether I can defend it and just accept that God's word isn't lying to me. It indeed helps a lot with having God's word in its proper place as authority. And ironically, as a bonus, not caring about having to defend everything has actually really sped up the process of defending these things, since I can kinda cheat my way to the ending by just taking the right answer straight out of scripture. At that point all the other puzzle pieces usually (not always!) just fall into place immediately.

As always, your candid non-dogmatic style along with your rational, intellectually honest approach, is refreshing. If one begins with a skeptical, unbelieving presuppositional standpoint to Scripture, the effort put into finding believable solutions to what appear (on the surface) to be serious issues, will be meager. Both believers and skeptics alike begin with a premise. That’s why I prefer presuppositional apologetics. Thanks, Mike. Well done.

Over the years, I have come into several things that I didn't know how any possibility could exist for. I have also witnessed a continent of issues that people fought over. During this time, God has taught me how to resolve these through study, through cross-referencing other passages and other translations, through dialogue with other believers, through turning the passage around and approaching it from many angles, etc, etc, including hearing selfless teachings like this one. And when I still don't know the answer yet, He has brought me to the point of making this declaration: We are missing something. This is so much wiser than tearing each other apart. A major life lesson left me realizing that no matter how right I think I am about something -- I could be wrong. This is not even about which one of us can prove that they are right, it's about discovering the truth together. Seek and find.

I've recently struggled my way through one of these kinds of issues where, when I read the scholars I felt like none of them made sense. When I started looking at first century texts like Philo, Josephus, and even the Talmud, I realized that the "scholars" have essentially just been lazy because they found a POSSIBLE answer and they just kept repeating it even though there was basically no evidence for it. There's a much more solid explanation that I'm blown away that no one has posited it. I actually passed it by a friend who has two doctorates I. The area and he initially hand waved me away like, "you don't have the degrees, so you really shouldn't worry about it." After a few weeks he told me, "you know, your solution kept coming back to me, so I looked into it and I'm pretty convinced. I'm going to dig a little deeper on it, but I don't see any issues with it!" Thank you for encouraging me to continue to do my own research instead of allowing "scholars" to hand wave me away.

@litigioussociety42492 жыл бұрын
The main reason the gospels seem to answer each other is that Luke and Matthew were written to supplement Mark, and John wrote his gospel later as a supplement to the first three. This occurred to answer questions of theology that each gospel writer focused on with John most notably focusing on the divinity of Christ. This also explains why John seems to omit much of the main story, because he need only highlight it for context, since he assumes the reader of listener is familiar with the other gospels.
@PeopleoftheFreeGift2 жыл бұрын
@@litigioussociety4249 I know that's the scholarly answer to the question, but that's largely the result of various criticisms being applied to the Bible. For example, source criticism. Where did Matthew get his content? Simple answer. He was an apostle of Jesus who was a former Roman tax collector, and as such knew shorthand. Also, Jesus told him the Holy Spirit would bring to remembrance everything he taught them. Plus he was an inspired author of Holy Scripture. ... complicated answer from scholars. Matthew got his information from Mark who got his information from Q who got his information from oral tradition. ... Yet no proof of any of this has ever been produced. ... This stuff might be fun to discuss, but it's only necessary if you don't believe the Bible in the first place.

For Mary Magdelaine, the sinner woman that anointed Jesus, please note that she cried and was totally broken and was pouring out her heart to Jesus BEFORE she was forgiven. She was not the only one with Jesus that day, but she was the only one that truly met Jesus. Something wonderful, strange and powerful must have happened to her that she bow downed before Jesus, washed His feet with her tears of repentance, regret, shame and thousands of other emotions, and then pour out her precious oil and anointed Jesus's feet. Those perfume oil are very precious and can worth up to a year's wages (300 dinaris). She poured out her heart, her soul, her love to Jesus BEFORE she was forgiven. She did not do it to ASK for forgiveness, she just did it. And it was then after all that, then Jesus turned to her and told her that her sins are forgiven. Indeed, those who are forgiven more would love more, but it is also very interesting that Mary poured out everything at Jesus' feet, before she heard Jesus' word of forgiveness. And from what we read later, we know that this Mary was the only one that sought after Jesus' body and refused to leave and wept outside Jesus' tomb that Jesus was so drawn by her love, He appeared to Mary before going up heaven to see His Father! So indeed, those who were forgiven much would love much!

I like to think Mary is a lot like us as an example where we sin and sometimes we think or others may think like how the Pharisees did in that we’re not redeemable or not meant to be forgiven because of our sins hold so much weight. But Jesus saves her from being stoned to death and Mary thanks her for saving him and Jesus tells her to not sin no more. So it is through Christ that no matter what sin we do we are forgiven and can come to repentance so we no longer keep committing the same sin. Correct me if I’m wrong with this

Sometimes it's just nice to know your not the only one in the world that came to a realization, God is good, thanks for sharing this mike, the anecdote about the trial and how someone else bringing in contradictory evidense doesn't change your testimony was really helpful(seen a few crime dramas where that happens) we are called to be ready . 1 peter 3:15 says we are to be ready to give the reason for the hope that we have, thats not quite the same thing as having all the answeres. Sometimes our testimony is like that of the blind man Jhn 9:25 NIV - 25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” (He came to saving faith later when he accepted christ as lord[or maybe demonstrated his faith]) Although God is able, and the word cuts deep. 2Co 10: 3-5 NIV - 3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. Arguments are listed here but also pretensions, we must watch ourselves for pride, making our hearts and minds obedient to christ (earlier in the chapter paul appeals for us to remember the humility and gentleness of christ so this is not an invitation to roast people and put them down but to stand firm in the awesome effectiveness of the sword of the spirit)

Saint Augustine actually gave the same explanation as you did for the 2 vs 6 days "contradiction," namely that the versions which seem to say that it happened two days before Passover are merely recapitulating (his term) an earlier event later in the story because it fits better with the narrative there. You seemed not to be aware of the theory before you thought of it, so I guess great minds think alike! For those interested, it's in his Harmony of the Gospels, which is available for free online if you search for it. I would include a link, but my comment got deleted when I tried to.

Wow, thank you Pastor Mike. This was an incredible explanation, I enjoyed it and thank God that he uses teachers who care about his word and try their best to teach people to think critically about the Bible. I'm right there with you, I got frustrated at not being able to have answers but I believe the Lord has taught me a valuable lesson today.

I've always consider the story in Luke to be a quite different event from the one in Mark, Matthew and John. Simon was a common name, Bethany was far from Galilee, alabaster flasks were often used to contain perfume, and anointing people was a normal way of showing them honour!
@MichaelAChristian1 Жыл бұрын
Yes it is a different event. There is no contradiction at all.
@mjolnir9855 Жыл бұрын
Nope, this just doesn’t work. Spikenard was an oil that masked the smell of a dead body during the funeral procession, hence she “anointed him FOR HIS BURIAL.” Moreoever, it was completely UNcommon to anoint a person WHILE THEY WERE ALIVE. Again, the oil was used to mask the smell of a decaying body. As such, anointing a LIVING person with Spikenard was never a way to show honor, because it simply wasn’t done to living people, only to dead bodies.

Wow, it never occurred to me that this could have been a phenomenon that followed Jesus around. I could totally see Jesus hanging around spittin truth and multiple women just become convicted of their sin and receive that crushing undeserved mercy and revelation of just how much Jesus will have to pay to redeem our wretched lives. They want to thank him, honor him, worship him and just so happen to have nothing but the expensive oil they just bought to pretty up their ugliness and they just cast their perfume upon him like the elders cast their crowns. I’m sure if it happened more than once that it would make Jesus’ dude followers feel increasingly uncomfortable, embarrassed or even exasperated, angry, indignant all sorts of things that we feel when we don’t understand or want to control an awkward moment. I know I’ve felt something similar. I love that CeCe wynans song about these women’s act of tribute.. Thanks for sharing!

The apostles were like ope here it goes again. But they may have had more cause to protest the earlier action of the woman touching Jesus because it was in a public setting and she was a harlot by trade…Hmm Jesus is the kindest man to woman kind that ever lived. No wonder the maidens love him. He is altogether lovely. ❤

Why can’t it just be a different story? How is it a contradiction ? Lol just cuz there’s an alabaster and a Simon? I never noticed this being a problem

Luke’s was a different anointing all together. The others that coincide with the last supper are one account. He was anointed twice. The second was before the Passover when the whole family would have been in the same house. Each account names someone different being the house they were in because they associated them house different based on tradition and relationships. The earlier anointing possibly changed the heart of the people in the house and was a teaching moment for them. The other account was separate for a different meaning and reason. It was for his burial.
