Was thinking after the stream, "Mikey should have just stuck on the Mid90s path instead of trying to make North Hollywood by himself and whatever he was doing after that". I didn't realize Mikey pulled this move unprompted in a Complex interview: Dude publicly talked shit on Jonah Hill and Spike Jonze lol, two guys that could have actually helped his career as a filmmaker. Didn't even give any context, he just said he doesn't like them and never wants to work with them again. He's not equipped to run a skate brand, but can obviously make a movie... why burn that bridge? Like Mikey what is the point of you running a skate brand in the way you are? Let alone keeping it on life support through way of putting kids in situations they shouldn't be in.

When I was a kid there were two companies in my city. One of them was part of the skate shop and the owner recognized the age gap between him and some of his riders so he had more of a young teacher vibe, we had to show him our report cards and if our grades dropped he would suspend us from the team until we got them back up, he was always good to us but there was a boundary, we didn't chill because I think he recognized that he had to figure out a way to navigate that kind of awkward dynamic appropriately. On the other hand there was this other dude who had a "board company" who would just straight up party with kids, it was really weird. Mikey reminds me so much of the latter and all I can say is years later that shop is still there with the same owner and that "board company" is dead and gone and that other dude has had a rough time (to put it lightly).

If you really think about it, most brands are guilty of “pimping out” young kids. They start as ams, get free food/weed/alcohol for participating in filming sessions, and are basically just used for promotion until they turn pro. Baker has definitely done this over time. Hopefully the TMs or whatever with the brands have certain limits, but that’s something I don’t see disappearing in skateboarding. It’s helpful almost all the time though. They get exposure and the big sources of money (Nike, energy drinks, etc) start paying attention. Look at the original IC dudes PS Mikey still sucks
@bennyshambles2 жыл бұрын
Very true. Also made me think back to the Rocco era, except there’s one huge point you didn’t fully cover; Mikey Alfred does not, nor has he ever, skated at a professional level, so he comes over even more exploitative and creepy because he hasn’t and doesn’t lead by example and he’s aesthetically and conceptually clueless when it comes to skateboarding. Reynolds and Co. (Baker/Deathwish, etc.) were some of the biggest pros of their era and they still skate and know what’s up. Rocco was a pro and he employed amazing artists and skaters, so World et al were hugely successful in their heyday. Mikey Alfred is just exploitative without any good qualities to balance things out.

In Mikey's defence, plenty of older skaters seem to have a stunted emotional development that makes them act like they're thirteen, though they're really in their thirties or even forties. I don't know if this comes from having invested far too much time into learning how to flip your board every which way, or because skateboarding is a safe space for people with undiagnosed psychiatric problems, but it's a real thing, especially if they don't have steady jobs or families to support. But then at least they're usually not trying to cajole younger skaters into building their silly brand with weed and burgers, lol.
