Do PUNCH SKIRTS even WORK?!?! FLIPPING (TEST) for Summer Bass

When do you use a punch skirt flipping for bass in summer? In this video I head to the lake to flip for summer bass and test out punch skirts versus standard soft plastic lures. A punch skirt is like an ultra weedless jig that you can flip into heavy cover and vegetation. I have a few fishing tips and techniques for using them for bass which I share in the video - but in general this lure presentation mimics bream or bluegill and can catch some big bass in late summer. I like to use either a compact soft plastic crawfish lure or a smaller creature lure, a straight shank hook, a quick change punch skirt, and a tungsten weight. It's your standard punching rig but with a little more flair.

100% on switching up your color on your trailer to your skirt I get a lot more lights on a jig if I don't match my colors up I started fishing green pumpkin jigs a lot with black and black and blue trailers and vice versa and I tried to avoid using uniform colors in my jigs in my trailer I think everybody does that and the fish see a lot of it ergo I believe you get more bites if you do something different it works for me. We don't have a lot of opportunities to punch where I'm from we don't have a lot of that type of water but we do fish a jig a lot so a lot of this is applicable good stuff mike

Just ran into you and this video. I like your style & enjoyed this video. I'm in CT and don't need to punch as certain of our lakes do have increasingly dense milfoil as summer progresses, but not so much that it matts over. I've done some experimenting with skirts to bulk up a texas rig, which I've found myself fishing more often than the jigs themselves because the jigs do settle down through the weeds much slower, and seems you've got to keep shakin' it to help it along. If you go up in size (seems need an extra 1/2 oz almost to match the basic t-rig) you end up with these large jigs with massive hooks. I'm fishing for 5's & 6's not 9's and 10's, and do fine with normal hooks. Plus for the time being I like 15# straight FC for my grass pitching in the clearer water, but will do some more experimenting with braid. I have subscribed to your channel, and look forward to seeing some videos that I've missed, as well as your future ones!

Thanks Bruce - might want to try a Tx rigged spider grub. gives you that jig look but the tx rig fall and clean fishing thru the grass and then you can choose your hook size more too. it's something i used to do when i lived in WI for flipping submerged milfoil domes.

Mikey, got a question sir. Wondering why you changed from dobyns to halo when comes to the pitching/punching. I know strength but why did you switch brands? I'm just curious I know the 795 isn't quite enough for that technique in heavy grass but why did you get away from dobyns? Price point or performance. very perceptive man! so 2 things. one i was on a limited time so i did what i call power punching which is just making drops and fishing thru stuff pretty fast but 2 i tried pumping a little bit on some good isolated domes and didn't get a sniff. it seemed like they really wanted it just on the drop.

@@mikeybalzz I still do that with a caffeine shad. I remember those videos. Caught my PB on that actually. Placed second in a tournament a few weeks ago with a lightweight punch set up flipping felled trees. I just put the skirt right over an 1/8 or 3/16 bullet weight with a belly weighted hook. Goes through trees so nice with the skirt. Only time it hangs up is if I get a bite and miss it or if I get greedy and fish across the Ys
