Great vid. Let me tell you some juice i figured out. I was punching milfoil at cedar creek lake ky. Its managed as a trophy fishery, people are only allowed to take 1 bass a day and it has to be 20 inches, but its frowned upon to take any bass from it. They dont kill vegetation, it has milfoil and tons of structure, theres no water skiing, jetskis or pleasure boats allowed, its purely for fishing. I fished for 5 hours punching milfoil without a bite. I was so mad, i decided to try something stupid. I put a bluegill colored fluke on a tokyo rig, and started punching with that, caught 5 fish in a hour. I used the lightest weight i could get away with, 5/8, 3/4, sometimes 1 in the really thick shit. They werent touching a creature bait because like you said, theyve seen it 1000 times. Try that if you ever get in a jam where they just arent biting.

Sometimes in those situations using a rod with a little more moderate taper so basically it has a longer Bend it's more parabolic will allow the rod to load up and let you know when you have a bite instead of always feeling for the tick

How deep water is this under those mats? I fish in PA and the only thing that really mats up on my home lake are pads if you can call them mats. The hydrilla doesn't really mat up, maybe for a couple weeks tops every few years when we have a warm winter. I have trouble figuring that grass out because it kind of just chokes the water out most of the year rather than growing a mat to fish under. Gonna try flipping pads this week in 3-5' of water. Who knows how that will work but do you have any tips for the choked out hydrilla areas besides top water?

Great video, Mike. I cannot get any distance out of my flips. Rod is 7’10” heavy Bass Pro. 60 lb braid with fluro leader at 20 lb. I suspect it’s technique, but could be lure weight.

What size hook do you use for punching with a BB Cricket. I used a 5/0 today punching from the bank, and it seems way too big. The BB’s just fell apart. BUT I did catch a 4 pounder and a number of smaller ones. So what size hook makes sense? Great videos!Thanks!
@mikeybalzz4 жыл бұрын
i run a 4/0 hack attack usually but i have gone down to a 3/0 trokar if i'm just punching bb crickets and small creater baits. props on the 4 pounder!!!

@@mikeybalzz Thanks! I'll get a few of both and see how they work. I'm punching mats from shore on a little lake in the Arizona desert. While I've got you, what reel would you recommend? I'm using a G. Loomis E6X 7'6" HF, with 65LB Power Pro, with a Curado DC 151XG (8.5:1). Hauling them out with all that grass seems a little close to the limits of the drag on that reel. The fish get really stuck sometimes and without a boat it takes some effort to dig em out. Your videos were a HUGE help in understand the technique and what I'm trying to show the fish. Thanks again!!!
@mikeybalzz4 жыл бұрын
@@toddrathner 1) best reel for punching is no longer made - curado 200e. working to find a replacement reel since i can't get those anymore. playing around with a daiwa and going to play with some higher end shimano's as well. general rule now though is if it's less than $200 it won't hold up (kinda sad but that's just a reality). 2) i run a 4/0 hack attack hook (sorta wish they made a 3/0 but they don't)

Hey Mike, terrible question but inquiring minds and all of that... Has Bog ever snatched a fish? He sure likes tasting them. But serious business. I was gifted two extra heavy 7'6" rods, and I'll never be able to afford another rod and I want to punch this coming summer. What compensation do I need to make in my hookset to not lose a fish or rip it out of his mouth?

He’s been pretty close once or twice but other than that no you should be good with a 76 as long as it has a little bit of tip to it just don’t pull on them too hard if they get stuck

Mikey, I love you videos, but I wanna go back and touch on two things you mention in this vid: 1 - Why it works when you point the rod at the bass, when trying to get them out of vegetation. And, 2 - The claim that a longer rod gives you more leverage. It's no surprise that these two topics are related. First, the "leverage" topic. If you took Physics in high school, you learned a longer lever actually gives you LESS leverage (In this case, the rod is acting as a lever). If you don't believe me, take to rods of two different sizes, tie a large weight off the tip of each one, and try lifting it off the ground. A longer rod will be harder to lift, because you have less leverage. The nice trade-off is that the longer rod is going to take up line quicker, resulting in essentially a harder hookset. Now, as for pointing the rod. Well, when you do that, you are taking most of the leverage LOSS out of the rod and your hands. Because the rod is pointed straight at the fish (the resistance load), you're not working the lever (the rod) nearly as much, and are relying on the reel to winch the fish in. As you can see, both tipics are inter-related. Hope this made sense. Keep the awesome vids rolling!
