This is no doubt the wrong way to fish a jerkbait - and it's kind of ridiculous - but this approach to fishing a jerkbait definitely catches big bass! I learned this concept from fishing swimbaits like a Chad Shad and with the help of my buddy ‪@jacobwallfishing‬. It's a technique you can do with any jerkbait using a few lure modifications.

I've played with weighting crankbaits and jerkbaits for many years now. I have used lead wire used in fly tying, suspending strips and dots , even larger split rings and hooks. I typically remove the split ring from the front of small jerkbaits for creeks and river fishing for Brown Trout in clear water. This subtle difference often causes the bait to float to the surface so I replace the weight lost with a small piece of lead tape positioned behind the bill on the belly of the bait. I can customize the suspension or sink rate of most baits these days with the lead tape that's available from different tackle vendors online. I've been using it now since the 70s and it will surprise you what a subtle change can do for a bait. Something to keep in mind is how water temperature will affect the buoyancy of a bait. The good thing about the lead tape is that you can add or subtract the strips and trim them to size as well.

Cool Advice on this. I normally just attach a split shot to the hooks base also. Haven't tried the led wire.

I live near Tablerock and we're all about getting lures deep here. Especially because it's one of the highest pressured lakes here in the Ozarks. 426 tournaments is what Tablerock will have this year, Bullshoals will have had 72 for the year when December gets here!

Man I've crushed them on Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn doing this in the winter over brush piles but I've been tinkering with this during the summer also. I have to put a little more lead wire on the hooks because I'm fishing it faster so it makes if easier to keep the bait down but you're 100% correct these fish don't see this presentation very often it seems like because they will freakin come out of the piles and crush it. Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

It's a super cool way to catch them it just takes forever to get that thing down there especially if you're trying to keep it sort of neutrally buoyant

Have you ever tried slow trolling a jerkbait and twitching it as you move along? I cover water and seem to catch more bass doing this. The warmer the water (like here in South Florida), the faster and stronger the jerking cadence. I also catch monster northern pike doing this in Canada 😉

Way cool! Been toying with suspend dots on my jerkbaits to suspend them in 8-10. Haven't caught a thing though yet haha. Finding that the center of gravity for a lot of my jerkbaits to be at the front hook. So I put a dot on each side of the hook.
@Bankfishindude

Do you think putting bigger hooks on the front would do the same as far as weight? Love the juice Balzz, thanks! 🎣
@FreedomFishing

It should work as long as the center of gravity for that bait is at the point of the front hook. A lot of mine seem to balance there. I usually put suspendots on each side of the front hook to suspend a bait.

Bigger hooks or split rings will do the same. Even adding an extra split ring to the hook hanger

Hey Mike, I was wondering man if you put it around your glide bait trebles what size do you recommend? I use grenade weights in the front and back of one of my Glide baits and been wanting to try the wire. I figured you’ve already tried it since you’re doing it on your jerk baits I like that slow sink jerk bait by 6 sense but just curious man, if that same size wire would probably work for a glide appreciate the video and thanks for your time man

So why wouldn’t you use tungsten putty instead of the lead wire?
@mikeybalzz
@mikeybalzz 10 ай бұрын
You can use whatever you want as long as it achieves the goal of getting it to slow sink. I just like the wire because it's a little less messy.

Hi Mickey. Hope all is well with your health. Can't a person buy a jerk bait that sinks?
@mikeybalzz

Definitely, that's what the Stunna does, I it hust can't sink too fast. Goal is to get it to hover right around neutral buoyancy.
