I should be thanking you Mr. Mikey, ever since you started this project I have stopped saying the bad word that starts with an F, I now use FOKKER in it's place lol :) Great video and interesting too.

I’m lucky enough to live in Brisbane where Kingsford-Smith’s Fokker Tri-motor is housed at Brisbane International Airport. We also have a flying replica operated by HARS down near Sydney. The original has a connection to Alaska!! Read here: The Southern Cross began life as the Detroiter, a polar exploration aircraft of the Detroit News-Wilkins Arctic expedition. The aircraft had crashed in Alaska in 1926, and was recovered and repaired by the Australian expedition leader, Hubert Wilkins. Wilkins, who had decided the Fokker was too large for his Arctic explorations, met with Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm in San Francisco and arranged to sell them the aircraft, without engines or instruments. And then, after fitting new motors and a few bits, the rest is history. PS: its plus 35 Celsius here. Toasty.

I sympathize with the temperatures, Mikey... spent a few of my early years as an AME in Timmins, at 30-40 below, working on DC-3s, Otters, Twin Otters, and HS-748s, to name a few. I feel I'm luxury today, at 2 degrees just north of Newmarket, ON. But I'm certain we'll eventually get our share of winter. Merry Christmas, Mikey and all!!!

Your right about Fokker history. After listening to the Hanger Rats, more confused than ever as far as the Germans plane ID's. Still that was a long time ago. An interesting note about the F.VII is that it was one of the last transport aircraft to have wooden structure. In 1931, an F.VII crashed, killing Knute Rockne (Notre Dame football coach). The cause of the crash was structural failure, and this led to a shift to all-metal aircraft such as the Ford Tri-Motor, Boeing 247 and of course the Douglas DC series.

Was so much easier at the end of Fokker when they called their two planes the F70 and F100 for the brand name and the number of seats. The F100 was a well liked plane here in the US. The better 3/4 enjoyed working on the F100.
@jwenting5 жыл бұрын
Not that hard. The F.VII was the 7th passenger aircraft model Fokker built. The next in line was the F.VIII (though there was, logically, an upgraded F.VIIIb/3M called the F-10 which didn't have 10 passengers but 12, but was ordered by KLM to have 10).

I will make it easier for the' hangar rats' to understand in basic ladybird book language. Fokker ,is in fact Dutch, the company formed by Anthony Fokker several years before the 'Great War', at first making the 'Spinne' Spider a very frail rag wing monoplane powered by various small engines ,i,e Anzani a tiny lawnmower sized engine that powered Loius Bleriot,s model 9 across the English Channel in 1909. Reinhold Platz a gifted German designer joined Fokker just before the Great War, he designed the 'M' Series , a clean cut shoulder wing monoplane with a 100hp Oburersal rotary engine ,and a distinctive 'Comma' shaped rudder. In late 1914 , this aircraft 'the M5K' that Anthony Fokker together with Reinhold Platz fitted an air-cooled Spandau machine gun atop the front fuselage behind the engine. A simple spring loaded push pull rod and roller ran from the gun,s firing mechanism to a cam ring fitted to the rear engine casing. The Cam precisely lined up with one of the propeller blades, ,thus preventing bullets damaging the prop. This crude 'Interrupter gear' enabled Fokker,s armed M5K ,now an E -1 'Eindecker' single wing to wreak havoc over the Western Front in groups of three 'called Kamphensister Kommandos' . Early 1915 these Kommandos hacked out of the skies many a dawdling RFC Royal Aircraft Factory BE2 going about its business photographing the front line trenches ,and spotting for our artillery. The BE2 quickly gained notoriety 'the Fokker Fodder' for the all the wrong reasons,as it was too slow and stable. Your Dreidecker is an evolution of Fokker,s fighter range, and in fact the Dreidecker is fact British, okay yes!!, keep your teddies in the pram (baby carriage).

So here's my take on the big announcement by Mikey on Saturday: When he heard that Nolinor in Mirabel was going to get 2 boeing 777-200 for charter he thinks he'll do one better and lease 3 Boeing 777-200 for charters to Cuba and Florida from Yellowknife and Whitehorse all winter long. Maybe Paris and London in the heat of the summer too.

Late 1916 T.O.M Sopwith of Sopwith aircraft based at the old Brooklands motor racing circuit designed a three winged version of his successful Pup Biplane Fighter. Simply known as the Sopwith Triplane,its staggered three narrow chord wings offered unrivalled manouverability ,more than able to cope with the Ernst Heinkel designed Albatross D-2 . Sopwith built for the RNAS (Royal Naval Air Service) a limited number of Triplanes,one named 'Black Prince' was a thorn in the side of many a 'Jagstaffeln' with Albatros D-2,s . Early 1917 Idflieg ,and the German Imperial Army Air Service contracted Fokker to design, build their own version of T.O.M Sopwith,s Triplane the Dr-1, and guess who flew one painted bright red!!!?.

"Big news that will affect the Plane Savers team".... I'm sure now wondering what that's gonna be? Anyways, I've really enjoyed this episode, it has lots things to go follow up on. Also some very interesting links in the comments, one in particular which takes you to some amazing film footage of a Fokker Tri Motor flying out to the Dutch East Indies in the 1930s. It never ceases to surprise me what wonderful things this KZbin channel brings to us aeronautical fans. I see the "rats" are still doing what they do best, not sure I could follow all their "aircraft designation type" reasoning though, but it has prompted me to go do some further Fokker research. I hope the extreme cold weather soon eases up a bit for you Yellowknifer's. I never fail to admire how you and all your wonderful planes cope so well with the extreme cold conditions. it was a bad copy of a Sopwith Triplane totally misunderstanding the Tripes purpose, they were all badly made often being found to be completely contaminated with mould and found often with rats sealed into the wings, pilots complained about excessive flexing of the wings during normal flight with a single strut being placed between all the wings as an afterthought , it was obsolete soon after introduction and completely outclasseed in combat by the Sopwith Camel-

Fokker was a Dutch man. After WW 1 he returned to Holland and continued his work there. The KLM Made his planes famous during the 1930s operating the at that time longest air route in existence, between Amsterdam and Batavia in the Dutch East Indies (now Djakarta in Indonesia). Thanks to the Fokker planes and skilled crews, they did this with almost clockwork precision. They started with the F.VII. After that the F.XII and F.XVIII. took over until Douglas came along with the DC 2. On my KZbin channel there is a home movie made in 1934 from a KLM flight to Batavia with a Fokker F.XII. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZzNiJ6HidV_e8U
