Wow I have not picked up a needle in over 30 years. My stepmom taught me as a young child and I would crochet for hours. Looking back it was her way of helping me with ADD. Mikey, your tutorial is wonderful. The way you are explaining everything not only on how to complete a stitch but why. Being able to understand the 'why' helps the process. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and braking it down into such a simplistic manner. I saw on Pinterest the most beautiful Starlight Mint Christmas blanket, watched a video on it and my head exploded. Now after watching you in this one video I know it's something I will be able to accomplish. Thank you for helping me gain the knowledge and skills to be able to make something meaningful for my mother.

I've been crocheting for about 6 years. Was taught by watching KZbin videos. I've watched many of your videos! But I skipped all the beginner stuff! And I've made my learning curve much to difficult on myself. I've picked up lots of nasty habits! These beginner videos are so great! Thank you for these so much! Now excuse me while I go back and try to unlearn some nasty habits 🤣

I always love your tutorials, Mikey. You explain everything so well, especially the overall reasoning behind a pattern or stitch. I've been crocheting since I was 16 (40 years) but I'm watching this before recommending it to a Facebook friend who wants to learn. I may have a good tip to help develop consistency in stitches quickly (15:30). I don't know if anyone wants to follow it or not but it's the way my mom taught me and, while I hated it at the time, I have been SO grateful that she made me do this. In the long run, it speeds up the process of developing consistency and it's well worth it. What I would suggest is to practice making a chain of 100 once a day for a week. That is, starting with a slip knot, just chain... and chain and chain and chain. Make a new chain every day. You can pull it out when you're finished or keep each one so you can see the difference. If it sounds like a tedious chore, it is. BUT-- at the end of the week you'll be quite comfortable with holding the yarn, making chains and making chains consistently. What you're doing is developing muscle memory-- like a pianist practicing scales or a typist repeating "The lazy brown fox..." At first, you'll go slowly and struggle, struggle, struggle. But by the end of the week you'll be able to manage relatively quickly. And, best of all, as you move on to more intricate stitches, that muscle memory will support your efforts. After spending a week doing that, all my stitches were very consistent and within a month, I was making granny squares.
@marigeobrien8 жыл бұрын
Also, while you're showing a lot of stitches because this is a tutorial, I would suggest new crocheters plan to make one or two projects with each stitch. Like a potholder with the single crochet (SC), a scarf with the half-double crochet (HDC), a simple place mat with the double crochet (DC) and maybe a baby blanket or lapghan with the triple crochet (TC). This will give a new crocheter the practice they need to become proficient enough to move on to more intricate patterns.

Hi Mikey! I was so very happy to find this tutorial..... THANK YOU!! I learned how to crochet & knit when I was about 5 yrs old when I was living on Terceira, Azores,Portugal. Our landlord's daughters taught me. Unfortunately, we moved back to the USA soon afterward & I lost all that wonderful teaching. I have "inherited" a bunch of yarn from my mom & grandma (only my Grandma B. knitted..... not my mom, hahahahaha). I got one of those plastic looms at Michaels craft stores & that kinda spurred me to start doing something with the yarn. Now I would like to some pretty REAL crochet!! I look forward to learning more!!

It’s great to see a guy in a crafting video. Definitely not common. I have cross stitched most of my life and have only found a few guys who do the same. I received yarn and a set of crochet hooks from my son for Christmas, and so I wanted to learn. I tried out a couple of other videos, but they went too fast and I kept having to stop the video in order to catch up. This one,so far, has been perfect for me, as I need to see in detail how someone does each step, and shows exactly how they got there. Books don't show enough detail, and showing me the 'spine' has gone a long way to my understanding, as other videos don't show this method, they all show going under the 'v' of the chain. Very clear instructions, so I have subscribed and will be coming back for other tutorials. Thank you!

My string is always loose but my projects what ever I do come out great. They only come out great when I count ever single stitch. I only know two stitches right now single and double Crochet. I always go to the first with single crochet. And I never go to the back I go to the front. Comes out good either way. This is just an awesome tutorial. Sorry if what I have said doesn't seem to portray that.

Great instruction. I'm 84 and learned to crochet when I was 11/12. I hold my yarn and hook like you do. Just one difference, my working yarn goes once around my pinky because it's too loose otherwise. I think it's because of the shape of my hand/fingers. Holding the hook like a knife is the only comfortable way for me. I don't know how other holders can crochet. It looks so awkward. Thanks for the reinforcement. ❤

Mikey, I am 58 years young! Crocheting I was 10 years old (officially) leaned at 5 by watching my grama for HOURS at a stretch of time. I sent to my sister(60 years old) who doesn't know how-YET- to do it! I'm a lefty, and, I crochet left handedly(left to right). O try to help keep the art of crochet in the forefront of craft-work. Doug😵🤓

This is the best tutorial Mikey that i have found I've been trying to learn how for a few months. Every practice peace i have done never looks right your's is this first to show how to hold the yarn and keep the tension, and actually show step by step in slow motion that how i've been doing the single crochet wrong and how effect's the whole outcome of your product. Yours is the BEST. THANK YOU so very much.

I was finally able to learn the crochet steps with your comprehensive step by step tutorial. It is by far the best tutorial I have seen. Thank you for this excellent video!!!

Oh fabulous this is the video for me. LoL! Yay thank you Mikey. Yup... post viewing opinions... 🧐 brilliant you made it look so easy. I've been struggling with splitting yarn as was attempting to make a pouch to keep a towel cloth in to have on my bike. Another thing is I had no clue if I was going into the right stitch and half way through the row I forgot what I was doing. 🙈 I should be embarrassed to admit that. But you outlined it so concisely that if it wasn't almost 4am I would be having another go. I certainly will tomorrow. 😊
