I think it's more that they think they are more important than they actually are. For a while, if you wanted to watch an animated movie at the theater Disney was the only option. While there have been attempts to compete with Disney at the theater (Warner Brothers, Filmation) they haven't been as successful as what Disney has released. Now, people have more options. This includes other studios that have had continuing success at the theater like Dreamworks, and also an influx of Japanese Animation with releases that are often better than what Disney has been releasing, and will do the types of stories that Disney cannot or will not do. Added to that is Disney is having to compete with itself. As an example, people can watch the original "Snow White" rather than a remake. In fact, per Wikipedia there have been 15 different versions of "Snow White" since the release of the 1937 "Snow White."
