Mikkey Dee (Scorpions / Motörhead / ex-King Diamond) Drum For The Song Podcast - #13

I am your host Dane Campbell and I play drums in Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons and Straight Lines.
During the conversation we talk about how having a musical family inspired Mikkey to play drums and how he saw Deep Purple live at age 7 and how he turned down Lemmy Kilmister to join Motörhead - twice! He also explains why playing a Scorpions show if more demanding than a Motörhead show ever was and why he never enjoyed playing the song 'Going To Brazil' live. He also talks about why he doesn't like Motörhead's Hammered album and how Lemmy was sometimes difficult to work with in the studio, which led to Mikkey leaving the band during the recording of the Overnight Sensation album! He also talks about his Wincent drumsticks and how he uses three different weights and combines them for different songs, why he doesn't like practice pads and why you should be looking at the ergonomics of your drum kit now!

Would love to hear more of the Motörhead recording stuff; especially the friction. Really interesting. I love Hammered for that different melodic approach and it sits well in the catalogue. That run of Bastards, Sacrifice, Overnight Sensational And Snake Bite Love is sensational

Loved hearing the insights into the recording of that album, I'm sure Lemmy would have been laughing about it. These podcasts are so laidback, it really is like sitting in on a conversation between mates, and if you're like me and know nothing about drumming it doesn't matter, it's still fascinating. I hope there's a memoir in the works Dane because it must have been amazing growing up around these globally recognised musicians.

I was at Bloodstock 2019 and it was an awesome show. My 2 favourite Motorhead shows are years apart . Bolton ( BIT) in 78 and then the storming Sonisphere show in 2011.The weekend that your Dad , MIkkey and Lemmy blew away ' the big 4' and Slipknot.

Mikkey Dee is an insanely talented drummer. His work in King Diamond and Motorhead is legendary, but my favorite performance might be his work on Helloween - Rabbit Don't Come Easy. Mikkey could've easily been the best power metal drummer in the world if he wanted to.

I was at Bloodstock 2011 and they were headlining. I remember thinking at the time when they were on like "wtf is up with Motorhead, something is clearly off". And i've seen Motärhead years/decades before several times at festivals and they always were the same and delivered (yeah im old)... Learned later that Lem was clearly ill and running a flu... The show was garbage really, it was travesty. No disrespect meant but when you are clearly sick and out of it on that level no matter who you are,... You shouldn't be performing. Re-fund ppl their money instead. I mean i come from the back end of nowhere and i had to travel 500+ km every time i wanted to see a band. And it was rare as well i/we got the chance. The ticket prices were not the issue. It was the price to get to the fkn show. Busses and trains and meals etc... I saw The Ramones on their Adios Amigos tour... But that concert was 800km away from us. You can imagine what we had to pay just to get there to see barely 1 hour of live concert. But that is what we had to do. The fans of the bands are equally as hardcore. But as far as Bloodstock 2011 Motorhead... Let bygones be bygones and rip Lemmy.

Great guy, great career. But unfortunately another proof that you shouldn't ask artists about Covid. Stupid trivializations and distorted facts. I guess the Scorpions have always been lucky with somewhat mentally defective drummers.
