Key difference: first driver turns out to the right before turning into the left turn to start the balance transfer. He did it so subtly and naturally that he forgot to even mention that step.

5:07 the reason why he understeered wasn't because of gas control but because of unmatching the revs when downshifting.

yes sometimes the right rev is more important than the braking itself
@goobytron2888
@goobytron2888 Жыл бұрын
I’ve found in my 05 Matrix, and 03 Cooper, that improper rev matching results in a snap oversteer. The weight transfer to the front makes the back of the car try to pass the front. The way to induce understeer is over speed on corner entry, braking too late, too much throttle through the mid corners and exit. But all cars are different I guess.

No. Opposite. It's called a shift lock. The car is sliding because there is no rev match.

Wonderful! Thank you. I have tried applying this technique with my '17 Civic SI and it works, even with my modest skills. The timing and amount of brake pressure is the challenge. Getting the car to rotate without scrubbing off too much speed. But without some trail braking you have an ugly turn. Fast in, slow through and fast out seems easy. Now if I can only get fast in, fast through, and fast out. Curious if the famous Scandinavian flick is recommended to get your front wheel drive car a bit sideways?

(I don't have much experience with a front wheel drive so this is just my theory.) You need to do the opposite to get the ff sideways, becouse the rear is being pulled by the front. If you scandinavian flick you most likely understeer. Best way to get an ff sideways is to weight shift to the front while turning in; to get it more sideways you gotta have more weight shift from the rear to the front. But keep in mind that weight shifting puts much more stress to the tires and suspension.

The traction is created by creating resistance on the spinning wheel (by braking) so that the other front wheel will get power/torque. Most FWD cars use open differential. When one wheel starts spinning, the other wheel has very little torque. With LSD differential, the effect of braking is reduced.
@arino6133
@arino6133 Жыл бұрын
When you apply more throttle and counter steer with LSD, the car shoots out the other way so you can’t just throttle to correct

great content & explanation - Thanks Mikko. Add-on: Would be great to advice trainee to keep steering wheel in correct way and do this all the time between gear shifts. This is a challenge from day1, when we are used to drive daily cars in 'relaxed' way and will take time to mind-shift. So, try to 'keep' steering wheel correctly as much time as possible.

Seeing as so many of today's cars and SUVs use "Haldex"-style 50/50 part-time awd systems, could you please feature some videos on how to get the most out these types in both high-traction (tarmac/ pavement) and low-traction (gravel/ dirt/ snow) situations? Please use VW Golf R ;)

basically in fwd we must oversteer it. because in natural fwd is understeer type (?)
@mkviis
@mkviis 2 жыл бұрын
Every car understeers and oversteers. The difference is, in fwd, you don’t add throttle and steer hard to oversteer whilst in rwd you add throttle and steer hard to oversteer.
@mkviis
@mkviis 2 жыл бұрын
oversteer is when the rear tires lose grip and slide the opposite direction of your front tires. If you're going left, your rear tires will slide to the right. In fwd, to keep all four wheels planted to the ground while steering right or left at cornering; is to add a bit of throttle, do not hard brake (understeer) or lift off from full throttle all of a sudden (oversteer)

He meant breaking with your left foot. His right foot was on the gas and his left foot was feathering the break at the same time.

Why not just release the throttle a bit instead of keeping the same throttle and left foot braking? What are the advantages?
@kricy8424
@kricy8424 3 жыл бұрын
It's better that way, the main goal is to keep the car planted through the turn, by avoiding weight transfer as you go off and on throttle, plus it keeps the turbo spooling, so better pedal response
@DashCamSerbia
@DashCamSerbia 3 жыл бұрын
@@kricy8424 Thanks.
@Biriadan
@Biriadan 3 жыл бұрын
Its actually because throttle + brakes shifts the brake bias to the rear. Brakes are applied to all 4 wheels, and applying throttle at the same time cancels out the braking on the front wheels, but not the back. If you let off throttle you reduce understeer, but if you left foot brake you can get the car to oversteer, which is helpful if you need to get the car to rotate quickly.

@jasperherron5267 2 жыл бұрын
@@tho9474 a regular automatic cant hold onto a gear all to well even if you put it into the sport mode, a DCT or a manual can stay in gear and hold it while you go through a bend while you feather the gas. an automatic you cant hold onto a gear, itll keep shifting even when you dont want it to which is terrible for fast times and maintaining power through bends. regular autos are p good for drag racing tho
