An easy trick to remember the meaning is that "たら" is the past-tense, so the thing has to happen first, since you are literally using the past version of the verb. "なら" is added to the dictionary form of the word, meaning it will not have happened yet for whatever you are talking about.

I am a beginner Japanese learning but I think I am understanding the concept of Nara versus Tara. 🤩 One is like saying: 💁🏾‍♀️if...then/first . The other is like saying 🙆🏾‍♀️ if...should/could Miku sensei, please correct me if I'm wrong, but here are some examples as I am understanding it. 1) Tara: if you want dessert, *then* eat your vegetables (first eat your vegetables) 2) Tara: if you want to go outside, *then* clean your room first(first clean your room) 3)Tara: if you want to buy a house, *then* save a lot of money *** 1)Nara: if you thought you might be late, you _should_ have called 2) Nara: if you want to get rid of that car, you _should_ give it to me. (You _could_ give it to me) 3) Nara: if you're looking for work experience, maybe you could try volunteering 🤔 one IF is sequential, the other IF is conditional. Am I understanding the nuances of Nara versus Tara correctly?
@Rhovanion85
@Rhovanion85 Жыл бұрын
Those first three sentences are incorrect. If you use tara it does not mean "first eat your vegetables" but it means "first, want dessert and after you want it, eat your vegetables". Also it sounds weird to use ほしい with tara... even with nara, it seems a more general statement where you would rather use "kereba" .
@Rhovanion85
@Rhovanion85 Жыл бұрын
tara is "if... then (next)" nara is "if... then (first)"

Thanks for wonderful explanation, Miku! To sum it up, I would say that 'tara' is more of conditional use of 'when' in English, while 'nara' is closer to 'in case' or 'whether you do it', 'if only you do it'.
@Rhovanion85

Indeed it doesn't make sense because 行ったら contains 行った indicating a "completed" action. So basically 日本に行ったら、行く前に日本語を勉強した方がいい。 means: "If I have gone to Japan, it's best I first study Japanese before I am going" the 2nd part doesn't even reflect on the first part. It's as if, if you have gone to Japan you will study Japanese (in Japan) before you go will go "somewhere" (from Japan to somewhere else?).

I find it helpful to think about the verb tense. たら is the past tense of the verb so “If you did [verb], then [X]”. And ならis about intent. “If you intend to [verb], then [X]”. But I didn’t know about the NAMEなら form that’s great. I usually just say 頑張って!

What i understood: Both are conditions. たら= If (verb) happens, then will (verb). 君が歌うたら、僕を聞く。 If you sing, then i'll listen. なら= Is kind of similar, But "reverse the roles". Like: If I do (this), I'll do (that). ケームをするなら、キャラクターを取得する。 If (hidden subject) play this game, (they) will get the character.
