This '08 Chevrolet Silverado has 400k km on it and the 5.3 engine has a collapsed lifter and a scored cylinder. So she gets a heart transplant because even a body full of rust won't keep this old girl down.

Mine's a 1998 1/2 Cheyenne w/4.3, 5 speed and 2WD. Lots of hangar rash but she still runs tho she is on her 2nd engine with the original CFI, trans and rear end. Clock shows +-300,000 but not sure if that's original as we got her used about 6 yrs old. Not sure what they did with her before but they did ride hard and put her up wet. She's hauled 2,000 lbs of horses in an old heavy steel hauler from TX to CA back and on to NC and MD. Side note on my Lincoln TownCar, when I sold it, almost 500,000 miles with only head gaskets and new intake. FN plastic

Recently found a 04 sierra 4.8. 100k miles. No leaks on oil or trans. Previous owner was an old man. He changed the oil almost every 6 months but he would drive it so little he would end up changing it in like 2 k miles. No ticks, no noise nothing. Shifts like butter. Paint so good it makes you think it was 2008. Was so lucky to catch it at the dealership as soon as they put it on sale. Man I lucked out soo much.

I.M.H.O. The GMT-400 88-98 (2000 for 2500-3500) was the pinnacle of GM trucks as far as reliability and general quality goes. The cabs and ride were so much bigger and better than the square body trucks (hate me all you want, if you’re 6’3” and daily drive a regular cab square body you’d feel the same way), the seats and dash were made of extremely durable material, you got the rock solid (my favorite engine family of all time) old school SBC engines, a nice ride thanks to IFS and a good, long lasting suspension thanks to torsion bars. The 92 and up manual trans models are my favorite, I’ve had several. The 96-2000 K2500 or 3500 with an NV4500 and Vortec 5.7 is the ultimate/best gas pickup truck ever made. The TBI’s are great too but low on power, those vortec 350’s were beasts and still easy to work on. I even had one 93 k2500 (8600 gvw model) with the 6.5 with a mechanical pump and an nv4500 and that was the best diesel pickup I’ve ever had, but I knew what to expect going in too. Basically the power of a TBI 350 but twice the fuel mileage .

I love my 2007.5 SIlverado Extended Cab LTZ with the 5.3 (Built the first month for this body style, 2007.5-2013, which was in May, and everyone says do not buy the first year bodystyle/engine, but mine has never had any issues). Now I removed all AFM/DOD Hardware once my warranty expired, did it around 118,000 miles, and it was working good. Awesome truck with no issues, never had any warranty problems, anything failing. Only issue was the small dash crack by the passenger airbag, which was very common on these trucks, especially the non LTZ style Dash. The LTZ interior is very different than the NON LTZ. Full Center Console, different dash lines, and a few other small things. Awesome truck, very dependable.

The oil pump o ring gets hard as a rock on those, dropping oil pressure. If your oil pressure drops you can drop an afm lifter. They also have issues with scoring cams if the lifter roller locks up. Lt1 swap (guy online in US), you can mail him your Pcm and he will shut off the AFM in the programming for $50. This keeps the AFM in lock mode and prevents problems in the future. You can also delete the hardware of AFM on the engine by replacing the camshaft/lifters and AFM solenoid with a blank. IF you want to keep the AFM system and have a collapsed lifter, I would put a new oil pump in it along with the AFM solenoid system for a complete repair.

done lots of these 5.3,4.8,6.2 s,never done VVT later ones ,love the older ls s.had one that a girl drove her pickup all summer with no coolant, i pulled it apart and the lifters siezed up ,couldn't budge them with, surprised it would run ,extremely noisy, through that block away(used for core trade in,even though it wasnt any good ) and bought a low mileage 5.3 from the wrecking yard ,2 yrs, later the truck runs great,.i liked the video.

I've had my '08 GMC Sierra 5.3L Z71 4x4 Regular Cab long box for a while now and love it. I'm aware of the issues that can pop up with the Variable Valve Timing setup in these. Everyone I talk to about these all say CHANGE THE OIL OFTEN and keep it clean so I do a 3000 mile / 4900 Km interval on that. It has over 155,000 miles / 252,000 Km and still runs great and pulls my fifth wheel camper like a dream. I believe it's all about keeping up on the service on these . Do I drive it like an old man( over 30 LOL) ,No , I drive it hard , tow to the max ,throw shit in it , fill up the box for hauling etc. It's not a garage queen , always sits outside even through our Northern winters in MN. Starts every time runs great. I want a newer one now and sell this one to someone as a great runner.

the mid year 5.3's are notorious for premature failure due to the porcelain tip on the spark plugs breaking off and falling into the cylinder scoring it all up. Keep in mind this is only an issue with the 5.3's that had cylinder deactivation but still it had a problem. I work for a local fleet that had 6 5.3's ( four tahoes and two suburbans ) and all of them had the engines replaced at around 100k miles, two of them had the engines replaced twice. These are fleet vehicles that got regular maintenance, the 5.3 was not bullet proof. Both ford and chevy made some great engines in the late 2000's but they both had their own issues. Ford obviously had the spark plug seize issue and GM had the plug tip breaking issue.

The collapsing lifter feature that is prone to failure is for the AFM/DoD system... You called it VVT, just wanted to point it out because GM's VVT system is actually really good and depending on the cam, can actually make a much broader powerband than if deleted.

That problem was most definitely due to poor maintenance. 369k "km" is nothing...practically low miles...we have about 8 of them at work with around 550k km. If you maintain them, they won't die at such low miles like that...229k mi is embarrassing for an LS.

I love the 2nd gens! I just bought mine last year and my Dad had one for a while. I agree the interior is really boring and not impressive, but it is better if you have the LTZ (unfortuately I don't). The Interrior on the 3rd gens are a lot better but I have heard the 3rd gens have more problems. Thy tend to vibrate a lot whenever you are at higher speeds (Chevy Shake). They have also been notorious for drive shaft issues and power loss issues. The 8 speed transmissions have a lot of problems too.

You made the smart and quick choice. Going with a junkyard motor instead of a costly and time consuming rebuild. Maybe you take a chance with a junker but if you have a good local supplier then you aren't taking much of a gamble. If you pull off the oil filler cap and can see inside the rocker gallery then you can tell a little bit about how the engine was maintained. The darker the coating is in there the worse the care of the motor.
