For some reason that might seem small but it's definitely noticeable when done correctly. For example, the street fighter x tekken lifebars/ clock timer. Say what you want about the game itself but the lifebars were too damn cool. Lightning strikes, eurostile font, cool character photos. Some might say it was extra but I think they nailed it because the game itself had a loud, extra feel to it!

As someone who is just now getting into fighters I would say my favourite part is how labbing breeds discovery and curiosity which then makes you actually want to go into matches to see how well you can execute the things you've been practicing. It's also through that discovery that a person can show their unique playstyle with that character.
@ShotoStephen

I was trying to word it, but I think you did a great job. On MKX launch day I beat the story then spent all night labbing Mileena and testing everything out online. I still remember this one match I had against a Erron Black that was 300-6. It went to round 3 where whoever could confirm into a combo would win and I pulled out a victory.
@LulutheJester
@LulutheJester 3 жыл бұрын
@@ShotoStephen Exactly I remember when I was 1st trying out the strive Beta I made the mistake of just learning some bnb combos and then going right into multiplayer without really learning any setups or shorter hit chains so that I could properly set somebody up or close the distance and manipulate the neutral to be able to even utilise any of the things I was just studying. After doing that I went back to multilayer and started winning some rounds.

Exactly, and this is also why I think a great portion of the genre has become niche. Because the characters are still the same cliches and archetypes and refuse to evolve. Take female characters for example, Mortal Kombat has made them badass and dignified and in this day and age it is the only fighting franchise that is at blockbuster AAA level. Meanwhile most japanese developers scare away nearly 50% of potential buyers by keeping the same old jiggly boobs and fan service. That kind of stuff screams "niche game" in 2021.

I disagree, I definitely agree that strong art direction and consistency definitely makes something feel great to play, but I think mechanics and story (if game has story) and just overall substance still carry like 70% percent of any game ever. They do a good mix of having a bit of something for everyone. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, but it helps some casual fans get into the game better. I love playing the story modes, the single player campaign stuff, the towers and what not. I love that stuff. I may not be great at online, but these games give me cool stuff to do and get on my own, like costumes, artwork, lore and character interactions. I know FighterZ had a VERY repetitive story mode, but I enjoyed getting scenes of characters having conversations before matches depending on who is on your team and who you’re fighting. For me, it's always been the visuals and characters that gets me into a Fighting game, especially as a kid. What keeps me playing most is option-filled gameplay, a multitude game modes/content, and tbh nowadays lore. Great sound design/music also helps. As a creator myself now, I _love_ when a fighting game (or any game really) goes in on it's story like Guilty Gear. For example, I never really liked GGs Raven too much, until I read his lore a couple days ago. Now I think he's rad.

SINGLE PLAYER CONTENT is so important! Especially to bring in the more casual folks. To KEEP those casual folks you need a broad roster and mechanics that allow for personal expression. Great netcode (rollback) is essential to retain players as well. Frequent updates keep players coming back. Even if they aren't going to play it every day, they'll at least check in after an update. Interactive tutorials to help ppl at least feel like they understand the game at more than a surface level. Those are my thoughts on what fighters need.

Conversely, while I like using Celica A. Mercury in BlazBlue, I don't get much out of her character so it's difficult for me to want to improve. But when it comes to characters, I think that’s what sets most games apart and keeps me coming back. Favourite characters that are fun to play as and that you get to know and enjoy seeing with their unique abilities and personalities. 😊 Mind you, in a fighting game that was kind of early for me like Battle Arena Toshinden on PS1, it’s also other things like the style of the stages (having ring outs be a sheer drop) and the fireball effects which look so cool to me, especially when you can shoot them from very high up above, like Mondo can.

For me, fun mechanics are great and I like exploring that, but the thing that pulls me in is the great characters with a back story/personality that they bring with them into each match. That plus each player’s head canon are expressed through the mechanics and that alchemy creates such a pure 1 minute story. I can’t get enough of how effective that simplicity is. (Plus dope art)

With Guilty Gear especially I knew nothing about it and then a friend showed me axl and now Strive is my most anticipated game in a while. Mechanically I’m not the best so games that you can build a bear your combos is always appreciated to help me learn and get comfortable with the more advanced moves in the game. That’s a reason I love tekken and Eddie especially.

The first fighting game I ever played was Tekken 2 and one of the things that grew me was reading each characters story in the manual and seeing their ending cutscenes. Also being I grew up watching anime, first one being DBZ and loving Enter the Dragon, I just loved the idea of fighting game characters attending a tournament. As I got older and understand mechanics more and with the rise of online gaming, I grew to look for good netcode. But in general, I hope for a fighting game to give me cool characters with a possibly interesting back story. MK is amazing for this with it's story mode and I just hope devs in the future will consider better story modes just to give an extra amount of fun along with the base game.

Playing Sol or Ky or Raven, I feel like theres so much to the game in terms of variety, comboroutes and the neutral is very satisfying and fun. The game just fascinates me on so many levels its crazy, im thinking about the game when not playing it and wondering if i can this or that and so on. It also helps that its one of the most beautiful games out there, and its got hella good music. I'm super with max on the Decision Making part. Even though I hate combos, both of my favorite games are known for long combos: KOF and Guilty Gear. Part of that is that the combos in them make the neutral more complex and increase the decision making required because a move you do in neutral has more risk and value then just the move by itself. Playing the slower games it really feels like my brain just turns off sometimes, so I can't get into them the same way.

I personally really love DOA, the combos and gameplay feel so good especially since I grew up with DOA2-4, and I'm quite sad that it's pinned as the sexy fighter that no one takes seriously, and when they tried to go serious in DOA6, it completely flopped (Although them having a lack of content made it flop harder). The others don't really do it for me, like I love Mortal Kombat, but I can only play it for like a few hours, same other fighting games, except Injustice 2, which I constantly played. Hoping VF5US and KOFXV help me break my fighting game limbo where I can't really get into them anymore even though I love them.

The thing is that Tecmo themselves are responsible for the mockeries thrown at Dead or Alive. Even if we forget for a moment that every girl is sexualized to shreds (many of them being barely legal btw) and that most males have a babyface, DoA is also guilty of very poor business practices (not only did Do16 only added two new characters, but a ton of DoA5's dlcs were yet again purchasable for Do6... not to mention the sheer amount of them) -We could also add a very weird and overconvuloted plot (but that's the case for a lot of fighting games) as well as pretty bland characters...Which again, doesn't help. As one of the only 3D franchises along with Tekken/Soulcalibur (maybe Virtua Fighter soon?), I really want to like DoA. And let's be honest : the games are always absolutely gorgeous and gameplay-wise, they're totally decent ! They don't have the level of realism of many martial artists from Tekken, but their moves are definitely fun to pull off. But the poor decisions and levels of "boob jiggle" are really preventing me from taking the franchise seriously.

We have enough buttons on the controller now to no longer need those.

I think having interesting characters is always going to be the biggest thing for me, but in addition I also love when a fighting game has quality music, character animations, and stages. I spent a lot of time just playing fighting games solo growing up since I didn't go to arcades or have friends over often, so having music I could vibe to accompanied with some visually engaging stages really kept me playing after having the initial interest in the character designs. And then of course having some sick character animations that helped bring the characters and the fight to life aided to that engagement.... that probably applies to more than just fighting games tbh. After that, then it's all the gameplay options, mechanics, and decision making that makes a fight extremely fun (or extremely un-fun depending on implementation) to play/watch. To an extent, those aspects sort of mesh into enjoying characters and their animations. When there's varied options and mechanics in the game, it leads to seeing more actions from a character during the course of a fight. Naturally, the player expresses the character through each action they're able to take. That leads to a flow of battle that's more overall visually enjoyable and engaging since more of the character is able to be shown/expressed via gameplay options. ...as opposed to seeing a 100 hit combo of the same 3 stale moves that the receiving character has no options to do anything about on a bland stagnant atmosphere-less stage... I'd download the ost tho if it hits. Granted that's just how I feel from thinking off the top of my head. If I took time to really consider all the parts of a fighting game, maybe there are some other things that are actually more important to me.

I am very much a character person. I love that fighting game characters can express so much about who they are with simple things like idle animations, taunts, how they animate when they attack, etc. These are things that are pretty minor, but they tend to play a huge roll in showing what a character is like with showing, rather than telling. You get insight into this character through their actions, not them talking about themselves, or some omnipresent narrator doing something similar. I feel good fighting games typically have very motivated characters that are actively involved in the story, not just passively being pushed around by the plot, and that is key component for good story telling too. Some of my favorite characters in fiction tend to be fighting characters, but to be fair, a lot of them can also be 2 dimensional or very flat, but they can still be entertaining and interesting at least. I am also on the other end with Max. I like slower based fighting games that test your nerves. That's why SamSho has become one of my faves. It's a very tense standoff, and if you guess wrong, or whiff an attack, you're gonna get punished, and its gonna HURT. One could argue that it's still decision making, but the consequences have HUGE payoffs. I also dig a fighting game that puts effort into its narrative. I know fighting games are mocked for having dumb stories (and a lot of them are pretty meh at best), but if they put some time and effort into a fighting game narrative, that really does it for me. Soulcalibur is my favorite fighting franchise of all time, and while it's Tale of Souls and Swords Eternally Retold can get dumb, wacky, or obtuse I love how bombastic and bigger than life it feels at times.

Why i think fighting games are great: You challenge yourself. It has arcade modes if there's no story mode. In fighting games they have cool looks and sometimes good backstory's. Not all fighting games are the same they're unique in they're own way. You feel satisfied when you beat a final boss especially SNK bosses. You can go on playing fighting games because of the arcade modes because you want to get a higher score and get better. The gameplay must be good. A decent roster.

1:01 Want to add on that it depends on your age and genetics. Daigo is in his 30s damn near 40s and has been playing forever. But some people who have been playing as long as he has, their hands are screwed, they can't play on his level no matter how much they grind because they can't (physically) grind. And your spatial skills also go down when you age (especially with women.) That's why you never see a woman in the final tournaments and it's almost 100% men.

Lmao Idk why you include woman in your comment, most female don't have interest in fighting games, and idk if you have biology degree or something but I'm pretty sure YUYU Is a old female with children still kicking it at the highest level

Right now I really love having a level of expertise in a fighting game that allows for making any sort of decision making that comes after the "basics". It's a very general appeal and possible in most, if not all fighting games. However, when you don't have to think about the (for example) 'when to defend and attack' you can think about more specific reaction and answers to opponent behaviour. For executing on that sort of decision making always makes for the coolest experiences in a fighting game.

here's another thing if this is what he wants in a fighting game why doesn't he play more Skullgirls? I definitely want a "Hype Check" on that one

Because "characters" are one of his stipulations and he doesn't like any of the characters in Skullgirls.
