Ebon isn’t short for Ebonics. It never was. Dwayne MCDuffie himself said that The name Ebon means “ black in Color” or thematically, absence of light.They named the character that because he’s supposed to be Static’s polar opposite. It’s obvious in the contrast of their abilities: Static uses his powers to “ light up” things and opponents, bathing them in brightness, While Ebon uses his powers to “ Darken” things and opponents, enveloping them in shadows.

@@Nerdgistics no problem. Honestly, I have no where Ernie got the ridiculous idea that Ebon was meant to stand for a black stereotype like that. That kind of harmful thought process directed towards African Americans was exactly what Dwayne stood against from day one. He created Static and developed the romance between John Stewart and Hawkgirl on Justice League to provide portrayals for that specific reason.

I think Ebon is short for Ebony. Like a dark black color in reference to his Shadow/Darkness Manipulation. I’ve literally never read Ebon as Ebonics, mainly cause I didn’t know exactly what Ebonics was at the time and mainly assumed his name had to do with his power somehow. Which is pretty much does. The sounds are definitely swapped, but I remember hearing Ebon from the show. Ebon sound closer to ebony, but it could be like a dialect thing or personal choice. Like how W.E.B. Dubois goes by Du-boyce and not Du-bwah

Yeah, short for Ebony since he's pretty much like a living shadow after he gained his powers (at least in the show). But that's also why people were complaining about how Ernie was pronouncing it in his previous video about this new comic series. In the animated series it had the long E at the beginning, even though it didn't really make sense.

Static Shock the show is what got me into comics, Phil LaMarr is awesome! its not inferior imo it was incredible for its time and got way better each season. Also the season 3 theme song is 🔥 maybe you’re right about the age thing, i was in middle school and would sprint home from the bus stop every day to make it in time. 😆

I completely agree with your sentiment on the original Static comic being better than the cartoon. When I was a kid and watched the cartoon? I honestly wasn’t that interested. Sure he was a nice character with some swag and… ACTUALLY looked like me, but the overall stories were so… nonexistent. Same with his character arc. This was disappointing, especially when you realize that this show took place in perhaps the best on screen superhero universe which was the DCAU (housing Batman the animated Series, Justice League Unlimited, Batman Beyond, and more). Static was cool, but back then? I’d rather watch Spectacular Spiderman, a show with an actual narrative and character arc. Though, my opinion on Static all changed when I read his original comic book. It was just so good! Virgil actually had character struggles, and a whole arc! It tackled more adult subjects like teenage sexuality. Even allowed characters to be gay and trans. If you ask me? We deserve to see THAT Static on screen. Like if he got another animated series. Ya know… like how Spiderman gets one every five years lol. Could you do more reviews on the OG Static if you ever have time?

I like other kind of making Virgil up to be sort of a young activist more than just a superhero. and when I saw Ebon show up, oh I lost it. I would love to see like Static have to try and stop what would essentially be a gang war between Ebon and Holocaust. Metabreed vs Blood Syndicate? Think about it. That sounds dope!!

Get the Milestone compendium volume 1. It just released last month and collects Blood Syndicate #1-12; Hardware #1-12; Icon #1-10; Static #1-8; Xombi #0-11; Shadow Cabinet #0. It’s a great way to get familiar with the source material.
