I remember hearing a veteran say that the best way to respect a veteran is to stop making more veterans.
@sohren94
@sohren94 5 ай бұрын
As a veteran, I agree. They don't even make sure veterans are okay after they scramble their brains and send them home. It's so sick, especially when so many people are lied to by recruiters. The US military exists not to protect us from foreign threats, but to take land and resources from other less militarized countries for money. That's it.

@WillyFisher412 At the same time, I wouldn't fault someone for joining when they need a regularly paying job and education though. If he was saying that to me, then I'd ask him for a job or to pay for my school. Otherwise, I'd do what I had to do. If I could go back in time to when I first signed that contract, I'd just wait for a job in cyber security or something instead of maintenance. What else was I gonna do as an 18 year old with no prospects? It's not like my favorite video essayists were doing anything for me. I can't eat morality at the end of the day.

I was in a bad spot when i joined the army. i signed a 3 year contract that had a 20 grand bonus. I saved a significant portion of my money due to living in the barracks and only having to really pay my phone bill and car insurance. long story short i discharged with around 30 grand in the bank, not bad for being only 21. so while i agree recruiters 110 percent target low income people, it is very possible to not be a lower class citizen by the end of your time. granted its also very possible to completely derail your life and leave you worse off than you started. if anyones reading this and is considering the military as an option, i recommend choosing a non combat job that transitions well into the civilian world and just putting up with the BS for a few years so you can get your benefits and put all that nonsense behind you.

Hm. Russia is cool though. They didn’t also use the Middle East as their personal sandbox. Also ironically ego maniacs like Puttin and Xi seem to be having a ball lately, so no need for us to do anything about that either right ? Could you be the first one to talk to the CCP and tell them how much you don’t mind their genoocide of the Uyghur population and that it was okay with you so long as the American government didn’t intervene with Taiwan and stop them from invading it because we’d probably radicalize them into jihadist extremists after what we did with the Middle East since that was only specifically American’s doing, given Islam obviously has no history of violence, I mean even if the religion did, they’d probably just behead anyone who said anything about it :^) Also, screw Ukraine right ? Should just take back all of that military support. Won’t do any good if they just become terrorist any way, right ? Since all we can do is create terrorism (??) by helping secure global international trade with your purported logic.

I’m the child of a Wounded Vet. even after you’ve spent your entire adult life fighting for, ultimately, nothing, then the VA doesn’t help you at all after you’ve almost died. They load you up on opiates and send you on your way- leading to a mass amount of homeless vets addicted to drugs. I was raised by this wounded Vet to be excited about the military, join West Point and become part of the military industrial complex. Obviously, I fought tooth and nail against that! But watching my dad and I’s (already meh) relationship crumble over not wanting to possibly ruin my life was the worst. I will never trust the military, as it ruined my parents life, my family, and almost got me too.

Also the child of a wounded vet, though the mental issues affected her more than physical ones. Though my mom was always anti-military, and after she served we existed in a very strange middle ground between honoring her achievements and despising everything about it. I saw her struggle with painkillers and alcohol and the VA dug in their heels even when she was spending months at a time in the hospital. Absolutely ruined her life and ours. There's no honor in any of it, we're just collectively in denial in some attempt to save face.

Before I answer that question lets talk about what your military has given you over the past 200 years. They have given you the greatest nation in history. A country where you are free to live as you see fit. A nation that has religious freedom. In fact, a nation that has more freedoms than any other nation on earth. They fight and die for you daily. They die in continuous wars that the government makes them fight. They die by the hundreds annually in training accidents. What do they ask in return? Nothing. They willingly pay the ultimate sacrifice for your freedom. Given all that I have said you would think that even a liberal would respect that. Liberals don’t and they prove it on a daily basis. Because a liberal has no honor, no integrity, no loyalty, and they hate anyone that displays these character traits. They are basically cowards that hide in the shadows. Harsh words for me. But I mean every word and I have become thoroughly disgusted. I will now tell you why I am so angry with liberals regarding military. I am sure you remember the debacle the Afghanistan withdrawal was. Liberals left Billions of dollars of equipment that will be impossible to replace in the near term. Liberals were directly responsible for the deaths of at least 11 Marines. The bloodiest day for American military in almost 20 years. The equipment and supplies they left behind will kill your sons and daughters for decades to come. No remorse from liberals. It’s the military’s job to die. That what they get paid to do. When Lt. Col Scheller criti cized the incompetence of the Afghanistan surrender what did the liberals do? And that’s what it was a surrender, and we ran with our tails tucked between our legs while the Taliban watched and laughed. They Court Marshaled him. A Marine with 17 years of faithful service to his country and to you. A Marine with a Bronze Star with Valor and numerous other awards for service and bravery in combat. So, what was Lt. Col Scheller’s sentence? A $5,000.00 fine and a General Officer Letter of Reprimand (career ending). His only guilt in my opinion was openly saying what everyone was thinking but did not have the courage to say. Now Lt. Col Scheller’s file goes before SECNAV to determine what type of discharge he will receive. The SECNAV can give him an honorable, other than honorable, general or a dishonorable discharge. Eleven U.S. Representatives signed a letter to the SECNAV requesting Lt. Col Scheller be given an honorable discharge. All eleven Representatives are Republicans. Not a single liberal signed the letter. But what would you expect? Where do we go from here? I sent Lt. Col Scheller a personal thank you for his sacrifice and invited him to become a citizen of Bandera County. I for one would be glad to call him neighbor. In closing I would like to ask a favor of you. I spend much time researching and writing these articles. The favor I ask is for you to give the Bandera bulletin feedback. Do you like the articles, dislike or don’t care? Conrad Streigl is the Bandera County GOP Secretary and Bandera County Precinct hair 102. He resides in Pipe Creek.

I wouldn’t see combat, I’d be stuck at some base guarding entrances doing patrols and the regular shit… I’m not special, I want to do my 4 and look for a private security job that pays pretty good locally (I know of places like hospitals and utility companies that do) They all require prior LEO or military experience. A book everyone should read is 'War Is a Racket' by Smedley Butler, a Marine Corps general and one of only 19 people to win the Medal of Honor twice. He was awarded his first medal of honor for the US occupation of Veracruz, which was an absolute sham of an operation that worsened US/Mexico relations. The landing itself was also an incredibly simple steamroll by the US forces, and yet they awarded a staggering 56 medals of honor for the operation (twice as many as the *entire* Spanish American war). Butler angrily tried to return his medal. He said he didn’t do anything to deserve it, and that it was an “unutterable foul perversion of Our Country's greatest gift.” To this day, the Veracruz medals are extremely contested.

As an Army brat (with lots of military family), who has also worked with chronically homeless and food insecure vets… the ripping away of individuality of soldiers hurts them because once they leave the military… they don’t know who, what, or where. There are a few programs people use, it’s mandatory to have a plan (in the army at least - prior to ETS, it’s called SFL-TAP “Soldier for life transition program”, most people i’ve seen (here in alaska at least) tend to do that in conjunction with CSP “Career Skills Program, where you learn a trade or go to school, while you’re doing that you also sign an agreement to work as an intern for an organization in the field you chose, once the program is finished (usually around 6 months - you’re being paid by the army this whole time btw) you get hired wherever your “internship” was. It’s pretty sweet.

@@d.profet5873 it’s not about finding a career post-military. It’s about learning to be a civilian again, you can have a plan for work and even a plan for healthcare but the military is still rather anti-mental health and people view military as “too manly” to need mental health, thus there is a problem in that there are those that don’t get help period and those who do go to the appointments but don’t utilize those sessions to their full potential for help. The anti-medication aspect of the USA doesn’t help, because people try to “do fine” without their medicine but instead do socially acceptable forms of self-medication (drinking) and some socially questionable (drugs, gambling, violence). Finding jobs outside the military tends to be easy for soldiers, staying employed is what’s hard

@@MysticalBlueRse I’m just an anecdote, but my experience has been different, especially in Alaska (mental health is important up here - bc of the sky high suicide rate) my point in bringing that up would be the military is changing, the toxic attitude of “i can do this on my own, i don’t need a map” (people not wanting therapy or help) is a vanishing myth (again this is my experience, but behavioral health and off post referrals to therapists are fairly common up here) there’s still a societal stigma on therapy which I also think is beginning to disappear. It’s not the best job and is arguably a terrible job (especially if you don’t stay in long term) but I can see the military trying to “un-fuck” some of the mistakes of its past (i.e. helping people transition into civilian life)

my friend watched his best friend in the navy kill himself before his eyes and begged his superiors for trauma therapy and mental health support from, you know watching his best friend shoot his face off. they never gave it to him and he started acting out, so they psychologically tortured him as punishment. his 'acting out' was calling out his superiors for lying about covid (saying it wasnt dangerous, your mask doesnt have to go over your nose, and that coronavirus was being blown out of proportion). he got caught spreading cdc verified information and the way they punish navy members is through isolation from their family, spouse, and friends. they take their phones and prevent them from going to mainland for however long they deem to be an adequate punishment. he had to spend additional months on the ship without being able to speak to his wife, go home, or use his phone. it was one of the worst times of his life and on top of that his best friend who he shared his bunk with died in his room. pure psychological torture. unfortunately i and most of the people i know are lower class, and there are limited options for upward mobility unless poor people join the military. i know plenty of army members, marines, navy soldiers, and air force men, because of our collective socioeconomic background. we force our poor to fight our wars and we don't take care of them during or after. i know people who couldn't handle boot camp and had to quit because it is psychological (and physical, and sometimes sexual) torture. when i worked for a crisis line for victims of sa and domestic abuse i got calls from women in the service who had been assaulted but couldn't pursue any type of charges or protections from the evil people within their immediate surroundings, which inevitably leads to a culture of repeated violence. i have personally talked many women out of joining the armed forces, because i was on the other ends of those calls, only able to be a listening ear to people who will never receive justice. in my opinion, no amount of money, financial security, or possible upward class mobility is worth the risks of being tortured and having to live with that unresolved pain for the rest of your life. dying in the military is merciful compared to what our living go through, and all americans should be hyper critical of the military and actively be against the institution. we are not peacekeepers we are terrorists, cruel, and war criminals. there are a million examples, but if you don't know about america's secret war with laos start there. the lao people have never done anything against america or their neighbors that could ever justify the cruel experiments the american military inflicted on them and the active bombs littering their country to this day that have yet to go off. because of america lao children have signs in their schools warning them to never touch the bombs that are still on their ground, and that alone should chill anyone to their core to imagine. and look into the Invade The Hague Act, where we excuse all american war criminals from ever being charged with war crimes.

However, at least it got me away from my abusers at home. I could NEVER hurt a person, so I became a corpsman, which is essentially a medic. I'm a woman, so I was confined to hospitals, clinics, ships,aid stations...etc. I got to work mostly in emergency medicine, so there was no such thing as an "enemy" in my line of work... they're a patient. I took an oath that I will always stand by, "Above All Else, Do No Harm." I got out bc the military is awful and treats its people like scum. The abuse, sexual assault, hazing, murders getting covered up, young military individuals (typically women) going missing. DON'T JOIN THE MILITARY, DON'T LET A RECURITER. Being in the military is like a fraternity that you can't get out of bc of contracts, misplaced faith in the system, imaginary honor, and some asshole shouting at you bc he's your boss now. That gets old fast. The start, boot camp, is designed to break you down. The more you hate the people pushing you, the more they expect you to push back, harder with that look of determination. Some of them will soothe your mental or physical wounds, those who understand the torture, but see it as necessary and traditional. The next phase is basically "college" with the steady backbone of maintaining your self and your occupation. There are good memories and bad but usually not life-scarring. That comes with the next phase. Arriving at your destination, your unit, your people you will work with, live with, fight with, hopefully not die with... you start a new life. There is still that looming dread of war on your horizon, but you don't see it yet. You catch it in the eyes of the ones who came before. Everyone copes differently by and with a drink, smoke, harder stuff, some by celebrating anything, or by helping others along the path. The thing gleams darkly between the subtexts. The job and your friends become the same. Whatever attention and attitude you have you give it all, or some, or just a bit so you can go back to doing something else. Distracting yourself, gaining life experience, climbing the many ladders. Then the day comes when you have to go. The hot sun, dry heat, smells of burning oil and strangely hemp, mixed with the fear that the next one will get you. That's when you step off the final plane and it all floods in on you. That rat bastard of a recruiter hasn't bothered to call you since you signed up. Vanished into the ether, leaving invisible blood-trails. Everything you carry is heavy. The armor, the weapons, the clothes, the extra things you "needed" hang on you like concrete. You suddenly wish to call home, to hear some familiar voices. The ones you swore to protect. The ones you were sent to die for. To protect some distant ideals. To be all that you can be. Never mind the corporate infusion into the daily battleground. The Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Subway, and more litter the Forward Operations Bases, calling you over for a slice of home. You eat it as the mortar shells begin their weekly tirade. After a while, violence becomes a nuisance. You sit in the bunker and eat, and wait for the ending. Your heart always races though. It always will if the sound is just the right decibel. Years later, thunderstorms will reintroduce this fear. You'll coax yourself back to reality. Then, time comes to leave it all behind. Might be retiring, maybe just a step back. Either way, the contract is done. They promise to honor their promises and you believe them knowing how hard they will work to hold out. The thunder rolls in the distance. You remember old friends. You smile at the thought of them and the good times. Memories of adrenaline youth. You also understand that distant look now. That stare when reliving those darker moments. The confusion, the panic, the debris, the pain, the desperate will to live, that ceaseless need to die, the blurry details and sharp horrors. You get it now. Not once did they ever tell you they were just people. They said "enemy" and it was fact. You questioned that and they said "they could be anywhere, anyone, even your friends." Good one, boss-man. You start and stop, gathering yourself again. The power transformer explodes on the pole. The darkness: quick and alive. You expect the other shoe. That feeling lasts until the fresh, clear sunrise. Later on, you see a soldier walking with his girl on the sidewalk. You resist the urge to salute. You might say, "thank you for your service." He might smile and mumble thanks. You might not say anything and nod. They might respond in kind. A dense cloud fades out. Everything moves on. As should you, you mutter aloud. After all, you both just wanted to be a part of something, a brotherhood, a family, a fraternity perhaps. Maybe they just shouldn't have guns, you think and turn on the TV. It's a gun ad. Damn you irony. -edit: made it a little clearer Thanks for reading this.

@@Ukraineaissance2014 Yeah it happens *a lot* in the film industry as well. A not-so-fun fact: If you see a movie that has military equipment in it at any point, it is more likely than not partially funded by the military and as such the script had been reviewed by said military to make sure it has no slander, criticism, or even just random shit the military doesn't like in it because in the Pentagon's own words, "Any form of negative protrayal would not be accurate to the military." Some of the reasons that the military has refused to fund certain movies is also just fucking ridiculous. Like for example they refused to fund independence day because one of the characters was dating a stripper, or one time they refused to fund a marvel and avengers crossover (i believe?? I could definitely be wrong about that though) because they "weren't certain how SHIELD would fit into the military hierarchy." But the worst part is that the majority of the time, film makers will have to adhere to the demands of the military because otherwise they practically can't fund thier movie because the CGI needed to recreate what they could relatively easily get from military sponsors would cost far too much. So I would advise to always be very skeptical of any form of military portrayal shown in media.

They really are so fucking predatory. I was about to finish high school back in 2006-2007, and I got a call. Somehow a local military recruiter got my contact information. I don't think I was even 18 yet, so I figured my school let them have access to contact information-which, if so, should be fucking illegal. Anyway, I wasn't the smartest teenager, but I knew what he was doing. For about 15 minutes he tried so hard to find an in, and I bluntly refused to give it to him. I made it clear I was anti-war, uninterested in joining or working for the military, was well off enough to not need the military for college or healthcare, and knew what I wanted to do after high school. Thankfully, he finally got the point and ended the conversation. Still makes me feel gross.

It's the most heartbreaking video and I feel like really encapsulates a lot of what you're saying here. SO many young people go off to war and come back traumatized/addicted to drugs/etc.* All for the purpose of putting more money into the military, oil industry, and weapon manufacturers' pocket. *Side note: During and the after the Civil War, before the word "addiction" was coined, they used to call it "soldier's disease," because men went off to war to fight, got hurt, were given morphine, and came home with SUD. The soldier to addict pipeline has been around since (at least) the Civil War. That's wild.

My partner is in the military right now and if I hated the military before, my distrust and disgust at them has increase exponentially. Besides the fact that they're disorganized and barely pay their members a living wage, bootcamps are unnecessarily long with whole days dedicated to cleaning the same weapon over and over and over again or taking a whole day to "return equipment." Out of bootcamp, military members pay for their own uniforms, down to the medals and badges they earn. If they are gifted equipment, it often does not fit or is incredibly outdated. There is little communication between higher-ups, dangerous hazing rituals are still being performed (and encouraged by drill sargents/officers), and the millions and millions of dollars going to the military rarely gets down to the soldiers that could actually use the money for... idk.. equipment? Or uniforms? Or food...? And this is just for active duty, VA is a whole different beast.

Now he spends his free time at work talking union info, workers rights, and convincing people to ask for higher pay. He followed his real interest (cabinetry, making furniture) and makes beautiful pieces and I can't imagine him being one of those young men, so pissed off and betrayed and lost. Not making these intricate and gorgeous tables, cabinets, shelves, toys. Something useful and beautiful. I have a similar experience although much lighter. My bf is Finnish, aka conscription. He was so excited to go to the military, learn how to drive big machines and work guns. However, due to a chronic illness they actually didn't take him, (although they waited until he'd taken a train all the way to the base and put on the oversized, uncomfortable gear to tell him that). This of course lifted a giant weight off my shoulders, but it did upset him at the time. Obviously Finnish military service is probably no where near American service in terms of awful-ness, but even his dad said after he was sent home, "I'm really glad you don't have to serve." Your story makes me hopeful that my bf will find something he loves that will fulfill him. That is certainly the dream at least, to see him happy and fulfilled rather than wondering about what he missed out on. So thank you for that hope. I currently serve in the Air Force and here’s my experience. The military is advertised as if every job is out in the fields, which is far from true. I get asked if i work on jets and no, i don’t. I’m a Dental Lab Technician. I make dentures and retainers. We have so many jobs that I wouldn’t have guessed even exist, like the one i currently have. There’s cooks, office jobs, electricians, plumbing, multimedia jobs, etc. I wish people who have joined did more research with the jobs they could qualify for. You can cheat the system while they use you. Especially with Air Force. I would say Air Force is the most “progressive” out of the branches. The boot camp is really easy. It honestly was 10% doing pushups/sit-ups, 30% in class learning to respect each other and the history, 1% going outdoors to reenact a deployment environment, and 59% doing laundry and chores in your dorm. As someone who grew up in a Hispanic household, boot camp was a vacation. Another thing, I absolutely agree with the fact that the whole “to get benefits, you have to sign your life away”. At this point, it’s not worth joining. The ONLY thing i can say that’s great about the military is having TRICARE and their college education benefits. But I mean you can get that from working at Starbucks now. Which leads to my next point as why military is ass, THE PAY. I’m only making 2,000 a month which i feel like is a lot less than what I should be getting. I’ve been paid more in my civilian jobs than my military. It’s gotten to a point where my coworkers and are considering working at McDonalds cause they pay 15 an hour. Compared to 7 an hour for our rank. My mom who served in the Army in 2001 at my rank was being paid more than what I’m being paid now. I mean thank god i have a job where i work 7-4 Monday thru Friday inside on a bench with teeth. But remember your pay is by your rank. And EVERYONE in the military gets paid their rank. So while I’m sitting inside in Texas making a crown, someone who’s in infantry being deprived of food/water in combat is getting the same pay as me. So there’s that. Regarding the military “woke” agenda, it’s not as crazy as the conservatives make it out to be. When I was in boot camp, we had classes about respecting everyone’s sexuality and gender. It’s very much mentioned throughout to be aware and open-minded. Which i appreciated. You can report any trans/homophobia and there are consequences for disrespecting someone. From what I’ve heard they have supported gender surgery, but I don’t know much details about that. But I wouldn’t doubt they promote that stuff to recruit more people. Everyone’s just a number in the higher-ups eyes. And this is proven. For example, people are more likely to be deployed if they’re in the Reserves. Why? Because Reserves is a part time military job, right? Meaning they only get a portion of the military benefits…meaning if they get deployed and pass away, it would cost the government less to handle them. Not sure if I worded that right but I hope that makes sense. Also, military loneliness is very much real. You’ll go back to your home town and none of your old friends will invite you out. No one will check on you. From that point on you’ll only be seeing your close family relatives. Most likely only for the holidays too. And very rarely will people come visit you at your duty station. That’s why military people have friends in the service for life. It’s a shared experience. In conclusion, being in the military isn’t worth it unless you know what you want out of it. What I mean from that is if you’re joining for college benefits and for health insurance, okay. Air Force is your safest option. But I highly advise to get a desk job in the service, get your degree, and get out. Please do not join out of impulse and choose a shitty job. That’s where you find these 18 year olds in bunkers who hate their recruiters. Do not fall for the recruiters manipulation. You’re away from family, the pay is low (unless you rank up but that takes years), you don’t choose where you can stay, you’re risking your life. If you’re not joining the military, good. Stay home, enjoy your families and friends, do what you love.

When I was 18, I enlisted in the navy. I come from a military family and I really thought it was my last option. I didn't want to go to school and I hated my job at a pizza place. I immediately started having medical issues and they thought I was 'doing it to myself'. Because of that, I was treated like shit and when I finally was let go, I was devastated for months because I thought I was a failure. I see now how wrong I was and how lucky I am not to be in this disgusting United States military. I have a wonderful life now with a great partner. I wouldn't have had that if I was in a submarine somewhere in the middle of the ocean

I come from a family with a lot of members in the military too and my mother (an armed forces nurse) tried many times to get me to join. Just a few months ago, I almost did, despite hating it and knowing that I'd just be a tool for the powerful. Thankfully, I didn't and I feel like I've dodged a bullet lol.

I can relate. Enlisted in the Navy right outta high school, volunteered for sub service and everything. Two months in, get thrown out for medical reasons. Beat myself up about it for years, still do but not for the same reasons. The time I spent in separations shook me up more than actual basic training did. The near constant flow of ambulances coming, familiar faces on stretchers going because of this or that. A lot of good people who couldn’t cope with the idea of failing their loved ones for this and that getting hospitalised because they just… broke. Not a single second of combat experience, but I was definitely surrounded by conflict and fear the likes I can’t even begin to compare anything to. Good people, pushed to their limit and for one reason or another cast aside because they weren’t “good enough”, and some who learned at the worst time that their lives were soon coming to a close because of unforeseen health complications. I never plan to go back, and I tell anyone who asks about military service exactly that. War isn’t the worst part; it’s everything else that leads up to you getting there that can break you first, and everything that comes after. That stuff never leaves you. War is just the reason you ended up there to begin with.

When I was 17 I really wanted to be in the marines. I contacted a recruiter and he was obviously very helpful and wanted me to sign immediately. Because I was a minor, my parents would need to sign but they both flat out refused. They were actually really pissed at me. But to keep me interested, the recruiter picked me up from school every day and drove me to PT. I had also just started dating a boy who really hated the military and everything about it and basically told me if I went, he would break up with me. I've always been boy crazy lol no way was I leaving my cute new bf for basic training 💅🏻 Anyways, I started dodging my recruiter's calls and he got increasingly more weird as my 18th birthday approached. Just constantly up my ass with calls, texts, emails, etc. After about of week of no contact at all, he actually came to my school and had them pull me out of class to ask me why I hadn't been picking up his calls. 😳 It was crazy. Also my boyfriend and I are still together, 12 years later lol.

What I felt may be worse though: as a requirement of national guard, I had to attend drill weekends during senior year of HS. After I broke up with my first serious boyfriend (in the same company,) our direct supervisor/dude's "best" friend tried his best to convince me the best way to get back at dude for breaking my heart, was to sleep with him. I had already started dating my now husband and wasn't easily manipulated. Feel bad for the ones who fall into the traps though, can see it'd be easy. He offered to care for me while I sought my degree, but after seeing how he reacted to my rejection, I def dodged a bullet. Few beers in, the night he tried to kiss me, he became condescending and weird. I had to insist on driving his car back to the hotel I was provided, and had to just be okay with him leaving in a less than desirable state. Asked him wtf happened? I was in the army years ago and my personal opinion on why recruiting is down is pretty simple. The kids who are turning 18 were alive to see the two wars this country was in for 20 years and don’t want to be a part of it. They see people from my generation and a little bit older with all kinds of problems from being in those wars and they don’t see the point in doing that to themselves for nothing. A lot of veterans like this Odin guy talk about how this young generation is a disgrace and how when WW2 started every male in the country joined but I truly believe that if the country was in the same predicament as at the beginning of WWII the same amount would sign up.

I joined to work in mental health, because I believe that one of the biggest crimes the military takes part in is fucking up peoples mental health right as they enter adulthood. People who join because they feel like they had no other choice still deserve good mental health care. (Side note: more military personnel have died from suicide than from combat since 2001). I'm glad more and more people are realizing that they don't need their drive to make a difference in the world hijacked by the military. I've met some of the greatest people I've ever known in the military, and we are all gen z and most of us all see through the bullshit. Most people don't join because they are horny for America ( I sure didn't). I'm so glad people are finding better alternatives to having to join the military. Recruitment isn't down because the military has gone woke (believe me, it hasn't). The military is just shitty and no one deserves to be paid less than minimum wage to die bc the US wants more money.

So much has been lost in terms of civil liberties, in terms of civilian supremacy, in terms of hatred of warfare, etc. We millennials and Z have destroyed everything else. That certainly brings a new meaning to the ACAB acronym.

being a cop and being a thumb are highly comorbid. I really want research done on whether being a thumb predisposes you to wanting to be a cop, or if being a cop thumbifies you somehow

Women are also disproportionally mistreated in the military, and it's not even a secret. My American cousin (female) joined the military, served her four years, and got out as soon as she was able. She was happy to serve her country, but quickly came to realise her own fellow soldiers didn't want her there. She was harassed, bullied, and assaulted not only by the men she was supposed to fight beside, but also by her superiors, and nothing was done about it. Every time she reported it, it was ignored and she was told she was "overreacting". She was accused of "not having what it takes", but the men weren't treated like that. Now she speaks out against the American military and dissuades everyone, male and female, from joining.

Good video. I agree with the thesis. Couple of factual errors: 1.) Afghanistan has no major oil deposits. There was a pipeline planned to run through it, from the Caspian to Pakistan (Pakistan does a lot of fuckery in the region, being a regional power). But that never got completed. The closest thing to resources the US would want are rare earth metals, which are used in the computer I'm using to write this post. AFAIK, these were never exploited. Afghanistan was, AFAICT, about regime change. Whether that's worse or better is up to you. 2.) The Mujahideen ≠ The Taliban. The Taliban were mostly former students in Pakistani madrasas (Islamic religious schools, which can be benign, but not in this case) who rose to power after the Soviets left, and the earlier Mujahideen were far more diverse ideologically. Some were even Communists. For sources on Afghanistan, I recommend Thomas Barfield.

Another fun reason we dont trust the military is they sit back and do nothing when a very large number of military kids including myself are abused by there ptsd ridden parents and moved around every couple of years creating extreme isolation and instability and often these kids are indoctrinated to believe we are special and the military is so cool and encouraged to join from the moment were born. On base they will play the national anthem at the end of the day and you are expected to stop and stand. And one really vivid memory i have feels so bizarre looking back. Look up “mrs b’s story time with a twist song “military kids” “i had that song ingrained in me by third grade. Please someone else tell me they remember her. I literally have signed cd from her comeing to my school on base all the time.
