I’m sure that meal was terrific. Much better than the old “K” rations my dad had in the army during the early 60’s. Love your videos because it’s as close as I’ll ever get to camping out. Permanently disabled now and my meds keep me pretty much at home now. As for camping out, you know exactly what you’re doing and also what not to do. Speaking of WWII, my favorite also, it reminds me of what our young men went through at the Battle of the Bulge. Bitter bitter cold, no fires for very obvious reasons. Our young men in Korea battling bitter cold, cut up wool blankets tied on top of their boots to try and keep their feet warm. Weather has and always will be something our young men and now women have to contend with, not to mention the enemy and what they’re trying to do to us. Anyway, like I said, I truly enjoy your videos and to all who served, thank you from an aging old veteran! There’s another enemy, getting old sure as hell isn’t for sissy’s. God speed

Great video! Love the WWII history. As a Marine, I can tell you that a 45 pound load is about what we carried. In the pack. The extra weight was ammo, weapons, 782 gear, bpv, and various other mission essentials. But, for hiking, 45 pounds is a very respectable load. Keep up the great videos.

I;m 73 now and disabled, I used to love camping. I always brought a few trash bags, stored some wood inside when saw that rain eas likely. Also when shoes got wet fresh socks with plastic bags over them saved my feet from getting to cold. Just started watching your videos love them.

My father fought in WW2 and was on the beach 2 days after d day. Those men were the bravest men alive and definitely the greatest generation. It's odd that men in combat won't give you a straight answer on how many men they killed. When asked my father would just say he didn't remember, yet he was the greatest man I've ever known! Your correct about axe safety. I was falling a tree in my younger years, let’s say many years ago and the axe skipped off the tree sap and went through the boot leather and the steel eyelet and I ended in the ER with a few stitches. So yes, know what your doing. Measure of the distance in front, as well as a safe circle around and over you.

I have watched this video over and over...love it. The format you use of sitting around the camp fire and "talking story" as we say in Hawaii is relaxing and so enjoyable. My Dad fought in three wars including WWII under General MacArthur. Some of his stories could make your skin hairs dance, not in a good way. Like you, Luke, I love military surplus gear and since my active duty days have accumulated a pile of it. The local military surplus store is my candy store along with Harbor Freight. I cannot find an Alice Pack with frame in an acceptable shape...so still looking. That Yugoslavian mess kit looks intriguing however I would have to adjust my mental attitude re drinking out of a square container. I guess I'm anal. I've never eaten the Turmat meal but enjoyed other freeze dried meals from various countries I had the pleasure of backpacking. My favorite was a schnitzel meal prepared in Germany by a local friend. Luke, experience makes you an incredible teacher. Even with 60 years of backpacking experience I still learn from the best and you are at the top.

What a great adventure, I thoroughly had fun. Recently I have been depressed, and haven't made it out to the woods lately. You mentioned Norway, and that case of food you got from thor. I had the craziest dream, that I was stranded in Norway, everyone was super nice. I also a had a dream like thing while driving through the tunnels heading into work in the city. It was more like a feeling that I was going to loose my family and be alone wondering the world. I immediately got emotional, because I love my wife and kids. Since then I have been trying to prepare my self. Thanks Luke have a blessed Christmas

Like the four frame segment to show progress of your setup. Reindeer translates to caribou. I like to pile up stuff to act as a windbreak across the head end of my lean to , might have been a good place to pile some firewood. One camp I made a wind break of rocks on edge, laid into an open box shape.

Got still a Toyota Tacoma, Single cab, standard, 2WD with 220000 miles on it, never been in the shop, ever, everything works just great, AC super cold; I changed the EGR Valve once, Its muffler which is an old Evenflow, (dual pipe, it sounds really bad ass) has a hole on it from rust and needs replacement but other than that only tires, oil, battery and that is it. put it through hell, used for delivery and work truck for many years, towed its gross weigh bringing it from South Florida to Las Vegas back in 2006, still run for many years, it seats outside in my driveway for the last 2 years but it was not broken, battery is off it. Its original Aluminum wheels were infinity with BF Goodrich Tires were stolen from an old neighbor's roommate who was a scrap collector and salesman, could never get them back; this was while they were sitting outside my garage on the side of the property, behind a fence because I fitted the truck with performance wheels and rings. I seen you older videos of the muse and I love that truck too, If I ever see one, would probably buy it. Many people have asked me if the Toyota is for sale but it is not. I went through a lot with it for almost 15 years; it never failed me and it is not strange to develop that kind of attachment to it..if is not needed to sell it, I will keep it for as long as I can!

Some time ago, I scratched my cornea, which repairs itself if not too bad. But I had to wear a patch for a day and keep my eye closed. It spoiled 1 day out of a trip because it was too dangerous to walk and I didn't want to take a chance on falling. The real bad thing was that it delayed my trip and resupply. There was also future rain in the forecast and I was on rocky terrain. I didn't have much choice and walked twice as far and fast to get to my destination, once my eye healed. That trip was memorable, albeit, for the wrong reasons. Now and always I wear safety glasses. For the longest times they were big and bulky, the kind that fit over glasses. But now a days there are smaller versions that have built in bifocal lenses. I have sunglass styles as well as bright amber(night time) and regular clear ones. I feel it is very important to wear safety glasses around the camp, especially when chopping wood. Liked you vid. ATB, Jb

Jb Bennett I poked my eye out at work one day with a fish tape and was blind in that eye for 13 years. For about ten of those years I was a SAR dude in the N. Cascades. I did it for about 15 years. I can tell you it was every bit as difficult to learn to see with two eyes again as it was to learn to see with one.

I miss my ALICE pack. Had one stationed in Germany two and a half years, even bought one from the PX before heading back Stateside (mid-80s) in hopes of always having the same one I used, lived out of then. Unfortunately, when my back was turned, my mom sold it at a yard sale she had going on at one point. I also have the lighter MSS bag, but should get the one you use in this video at some point, and probably one or both of the bivies as well. Thanks for this video, and all you do and share those of us who appreciate the great outdoors as well.

Hi Luke, Thanks for another great Military Surplus Overnight Adventure video. As always, you have a really good eye for the natural scenery and capturing it with your cinematography. I really enjoy watching your videos and agree with the historical points you made about the significance of WW II in world history. Since you usually seek fan requests about what type of gear you you will use on these military surplus videos, I had a couple of ideas to share with you about military surplus gear you might consider using in you future videos. Specifically, based upon your recommendation in a previous video I picked up the Swiss Army Rain Poncho from Amazon. Hence, it occurred to me that it would be interesting to see how you would use one of them as your tarp shelter with some other military surplus gear of your choice. Similarly, I would also be curious to see you use a US Army or Marines poncho as another improvised shelter for comparison purposes and hear your thoughts since we trust you.
