I got off active duty many years ago and was automatically enrolled in the IRR. I had not met my commissioning requirements. As I was getting close to my 8 years, I began getting these threatening letters (height of the war in Iraq). I decided to get into the National Guard after a four year break. Here I am now 16 years later, after having a good career in both the NG and Army Reserves. I started this research because because of my stance on the COVID-19 vax. Good video for those needing to extend your benefits. Good luck in your adventures.

Great vid capt. Is sound like the irr I’d gives you the same things the VA health care id gives you but being in the irr keeps your foot in the door like you said. Also it allows you to continue to earn points for retirement through either drilling for points or correspondence courses. BM2(SW) Campini USNR

Thanks for watching! Yes it sure seems like that… The one thing the IRR ID doesn’t give you is the actual healthcare from the VA, which I’m thankful to have access to! You know I’m not sure if you can still do correspondence courses for points, because I was looking into that and apparently a few years ago, they shut that down. Now I could be wrong but I was looking pretty extensively because that’d be an interesting arrangement to me! Thanks for your comment.

What? That's super, but I'm way late and a dollar short. I've been out of IRR since 1988. This didn't exist in my day. In fact, as a drilling reservist, we had to use our LES statements to go use PX, Commissary for 4 times per month. They would actually punch a hole in your statement. (Leave and earning statement) Now, today the px, Commissary is unlimited for reservist!!! I do have a service connection VA ID. It works by having to get vetted at the base visitors control center, and they register you for that base. Depending on the base, it may be good for 3 years as in JBSA or in the case of JRB Fort Worth, 6 months only before having to register on base. My wife has to go daily for a pass if she comes with me, but sometimes the pass is good for three days. (Kinda sucks but hey, glad to have it.) Thank you for showing us this ID card. You earned it, and you're still putting your tail on the line for this country while most never think about contributing. USMC vet

Okay gotcha, yea, I’d say if you think there’s even a small possibility that you might want to come back in, let’s say, to take an ADOS assignment or you find a cool IMA position, then I’d consider it. In my mind, it’s a fairly low-risk move to make to simply keep a foot in the door. Idk if you’re enlisted or officer, and I’m not 100% sure of how it works for enlisted, but if you want to try, I’d say it doesn’t hurt. For me, I use it to get on different bases, you get to use the gym, use some of the cool campgrounds or bungalows (in Hawai’i for example) or go to concerts, or PX. Hope this helps.

I'm in the Air Force Reserve IRR right now, but in order to get Veteran's Preference for civilian government jobs, I have to be considered a "current member" of the military. Does being IRR still mean I'm a current military member?
@freereinveterans2 жыл бұрын
Current member??? Really? That seems odd, since the definition of “veteran” is someone who’s no longer in the military 😂. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it was something like that that didn’t make sense. I’m honestly not sure. But interested if you find anything out…
@fernando-personalfrugalfin9872 жыл бұрын
Gordon I don't think the IRR is a current member. To obtain veterans status you need 180 days of Active Duty time. From what I heard, if you only been in the reserves you need 20 years of reserve time to obtain veterans status. Best way to get the 180 days of AD is to deployed while being in the reserves or get on title 10 position.

I did a transition from Active duty to the Reserve component and I'm under 8 years of service. Is it easier to go back Active from the Reserve or it's easier to move to the IRR and go active duty which one will be a faster transition to the active duty component ???
@freereinveterans2 жыл бұрын
I’ve not spoken to anyone who’s made this transition for a while. I think I knew a guy who knew a guy who did it. As I understand, generally speaking, it’s not easy to transition from the reserve component to the active duty component. However, it would be easier trying to go from reserves to active vs IRR to active. And another option is to volunteer for active duty deployments/ADOS assignments while a reservist, which are temporary assignments with set end dates, but you’re only on active duty orders for that set time frame and then you go back to reserve status. This is from an officer perspective. I think as enlisted, it is *much* easier. You can have a break in service and reenlist in whatever component you want to-reserve or active. Sorry I don’t have a better answer for you.

@freereinveterans Жыл бұрын
Yes, I did travel with firearms and that’s a great point-you can’t take them on base unless you’re going directly to the range… I’ve used my IRR ID card quite a few times now to get on post to do different things, but not while I’m in my van. That would definitely be a problem though. A lot of RVers have other options though with 5th wheels or truck campers and trailers where they can leave their dwelling behind and have a concealed/secured/locked firearm in their dwelling and use their vehicle separately. Not the best, because it could get stolen, but it is what it is. For my van though, the vehicle is attached to the dwelling so it’d be a no-go for me 😆
