The Army has been showing off three new experimental vehicles which they hope will revolutionise military transport in the future.
The three have all been converted to hybrid power, and as Simon Newton’s been finding out, they can do a lot more than just carry troops across the battlefield.

Speaking as someone who was in the army for over 5 years. Having military vehicles as battery electric provides a significant tactical advantage. You can hear armoured vehicles from km's away. Having a silent/ near silent vehicle is a HUGE deal. Additionally, the fact that you could charge your fleet with Solar, rather than having to have a massive logistical supply chain means better/ longer forward operating ability.
@darrenjones3681
@darrenjones3681 3 жыл бұрын
@@5252085 yes I totally get the tactical sound advantage , but their are real world safety issues for maintenance, also unless it’s a solid state battery (still right now unlikely) the risk of a battery being damaged by a round particularly in wet environments is a real explosion risk , plus what happens if you get too used to being quiet on electric drive and the engine kicks in at an inappropriate moment and then your position and stealth advantage just becomes a liability

An increase actually. Hybrid engines can decrease logistics burdens on both fuel and electricity. For advanced recon/SF needs , electric motors can be very quiet increasingly ones ability to remain covert and thereby increases survivability Looks at the French Arqubus

@@TheWareek You do realise there is an alternative hydrocarbon right? You do also realise that tanks of today still need logistics vehicles for refuel right? Assuming they would develop battery cell trucks, then that would be an option. Heard of batteries? Also, there is still much development to be done to further these tech. What is not possible today can probably be done tomorrow. Like 1930’s jets development.

@Jabster that goes without saying, but we are far from that point with our current battery situation sadly... Atomic power sadly has also been stunted, with too many people believing it is safer to use fossil fuels in fear of big nuclear bomb style explosions, preventing us from properly replacing old style reactors which are safe still but obsolete compared to newer designs. Some countries like Germany are planning outright banning nuclear to temporary build dozens of fossil fuel plants for 'safety' reasons... kurzgesagt in a nutshell have explained it all better then me.

For a long time now I was hoping that someone would design and build and electric off road trailer for 4wd over landing as many 4WD owners modify their suspension so that they can carry more weight and some still overload their axles. Instead of being a burden that a normal trailer is a 4 wheeled electrically driven trailer would help in difficult off road conditions wether it be mud, snow or rock climbing. It could be made so that it can be spun around via skid steering while disconnected from the tow vehicle if needed. As with other hybrid vehicles it would have an increased range with batteries carried and not be as inefficient on road as just towing a normal trailer as it could assist without actually pushing the tow vehicle by taking the load off it in acceleration and on hill climbs via a load sensing telescopic trailer connection. Also as per usual regenerative breaking could be a worthwhile option to extend range and save wear on the brakes. Maybe this concept is worth looking at for the army as well as it could be used with existing vehicles with very little modifications.

I read in Janes must be 10 yr plus ago, Oshkosh made a hybrid back then. I can't remember figures except it could run at 80miles per hour on electric for several hours and could recharge from 1. The engine 2. The wheels turning. As well coming to a stop on diesel it somehow used 60% of that power to start moving again. The other thing was the cab looked very reminiscent of those old com-block trucks that had icbm on them like in the movie Stripes. Weird small looking cab and looked like 2 foot high above the wheels. Presumably to house batteries. I think they were used in occupation of iraq(?) maybe. Long time ago I read that

@marc0523
@marc0523 3 жыл бұрын
Other battery techs exist which are not as dangerous as li-ion. Power cables are already in a vehicle, along with hydraulics and fuel lines, these can all be shot as well. A battery shorting the chassis would cause an RCD trip, which would remove that cable from use, any decent system would have redundancy, so you might lose 1 of your 4 drive sources. You still have a much more reliable vehicle.

Thinking in the context of war, EV is a total mess. You have to wait for the vehicle to charge which God knows takes how long depending on the capacity. While when using diesel or petrol, you fuel it up and it's ready to go. You run out of fuel on the battlefield, you fuel it up and you're ready to go in minutes. When you run out of electricity, you would need to charge it up which takes time. something no one has in a war.

Strategic benefit for less reliance on fossil fuels. Reality is that each thing will be heavier, and more expensive while just shifting dependency on a power grid that’s dependent on fossil fuels as well. Until our power grid is not dependent on fossil fuels the primary benefit of this strategically is none existent.

What luck that the ground was wet during the "spin in place" demo". I guess they'll train the troops to look for slippery patches on the battlefield.

Electric vehicles would be better zero emissions and better performance like Tesla don't need oil and gas and is cheaper in the long run , should get semi-autonomous systems too . Probably by 2030 👍💪

guys, drop it. british military vehicles with the notable exception of Defender were a joke and God knows how many British lifes were lost because of this perenial experimentation. Drop it, get serious, take a look at what the US, the Germans and others are doing. This permanent quirkiness leads to lost wars and loss of life. Someone here mentioned the open vehicle track vehicules used in WWII, the but of jokes in German and Allied folklore
