I was a seal, class 149. I spent most of my days sunbathing and catching fish. Occasionally we would all pile on top of each other to keep warm. My team and I were proficient swimmers. Some of these guys have mental issues that I think should be taken into account. I'm a vet, and because of where I live, near A.P.G. (Aberdeen Proving Ground) it's common to see and interact with active duty personel. Unfortunately, you tend to see quite a few occurrences of "Stolen Valor" as well. I used to make a point out by publicly shaming these individuals, and point out what they were doing. What I began to see, is that some of these individuals have psycholgical issues. Many of them really don't understand or comprehend the anger and pain this can have on members of the military. The thing I didn't see at first is that some of these folks have pain of their own. Sometimes, they do this because, for once instead of being made fun of, looked down upon, and disrespected, they may get thanked and appreciated...even if it's just a small glance and a nod of respect, it canmakes them feel "normal" for a few seconds. In no way am saying this is always the case..or even the majority of cases, just that it does happen. I realized this when I confronted someone who, after I publicly began to shame, proceeded to show symptoms of a panic attack. I realized quickly that there was more to his story so I took him aside, sat him down, and got him a coffee so I could find out what was happening. I won't go into specifics, but I will say that after 20 or 30 minutes with him, I changed the way I handled these situations. He was really just looking for some positive interactions with people...some of the same people who never gave him a second thought, walked passed him with their eyes down, mouth shut, and heads turned. Even if he said hello, or good morning, they treated him like a pile of trash that they had no time to clean up...just avoid and walk around. He was homeless, and like many in his situation, he was not getting treatment...at least not the kind of treatment he should be receiving. Since he wasn't a vet he didn't have a V.A. to go to, he had medicaid, but where we live there is a huge wait and backlog for him, and many like him trying to get proper medical/mental care. I know this is a LONG comment and I apologize for it. The point I'm trying to make is, please try and get the full story when this happens. Just listen and explain why this hurts vets and members of our great military. You never know the positive or negative impact u can have on someone like this. If he would of had that panic attack, and went away from my verbal beat down and hurt someone or himself...maybe even to the point of suicide, I would of felt like some of that blood was on my hands. Thanks for listening.

I understand it is wrong and disrespectful to soldiers past present and future however there are better ways about handling situations like this that don’t involve a camera and humiliation. Thank you for being wonderful to the homeless man.

@@stephaniekaylive sometimes anger and ignorance in these situations are much easier emotions then understanding and forgiveness. I've been guilty of taking the easy road sometimes, as we all have done, but I've grown a bit more wise as I've gotten older. I do understand where the anger comes from over people who do this. Especially from those of us who have spent time in active war zones, and have lost brothers/sisters, or those who personally have had traumatic injuries that have affected every aspect of their lives. However, I think I lost track of why I enlisted in the first place, and had a hard time looking past the pain. I wanted to protect my country, it's people, from enemies at home or abroad...so I take a bit of my time to talk to these individuals when I come across them. Make it clear why this is not ok, but also try and find out why they are doing it to begin with. Thanks for the positive comment.

@@cvoorhees5832 I'm not sure what world you're living in but they don't treat long term mental issues in the e.r. especially not in smaller community hospitals. What I'm referring to is conditions like schizophrenia, or bi-polar condition. They just don't hand out psych-meds after seeing you for a few minutes If it's something like suicidal ideation then in our state u get a 72 hour psych hold, but this person on this particular day had some long going issues that need to be addressed with medications that must be monitored and adjusted for pretty much the rest of his life. So yes he can go to the E.R. for "emergency" treatment if he feels like walking for a few hours to get there, but unless he's a danger to himself or others they are just not going to do anything but tell him to call county mental health services and make and appointment, which because his condition must be addressed by a psychiatrist (for medications) and not just talk therapy, so the appointment won't be for 2 to 3 months...by the time that rolls around he's either forgotten, or it's just not as big of a priority as food or shelter. I'm glad you live in a world where things are so black and white...here in the real world things are often different shades of grey as well...

I'm a 62 yr old Army Veteran. I served in the 2/58th Infantry from 75-79 as a TOW missile gunner. I used to be proud to wear a Veterans ball cap or some kind of T-shirt but these assholes have every vet out there yelling "stolen valor" at anyone wearing a surplus camo baseball cap from 1983. I miss having another Vet approach me and we'd compare when and where we'd served. Now it's a god damned interogation and most times in public and at least once in front of my family and the sad thing is, most don't even know the meaning of stolen valor. It started out as people to pretending to be medal of honor winners with the express purpose of stealing goods or services. I met a few guys in my life who weren't playing with a full deck who had civil war decorations on camies. These people should NOT be set upon. Legally or physically. They aren't fooling anyone. They're just trying to get through their sad little lives one day at a time. As for guys pretending to be wounded vets collecting for veterans organizations you've never heard of, go get em!

Stolen Valor is only a Federal Offense in connection with some kind of actual fraud. The portion of the law banning simple claims of service, medals, and wearing the uniform were struck down as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in US V Alvarez.

There is a Stolen Valor law and I would never do it, but there is a distinction between wearing fatigues and actually wearing the medals that brings the crime up to fraud. Check when Stolen Valor was shot down in court based on the first Amendment only for Tye Stolen Valor Act as updated that means a stolen valor case must rise to the level of fraud. If you are going out at shaming those wearing uniforms go ahead, but read the Statute as updated before you go calling the police or have the police called on you.
