When looking for Mauser HSc or Mauser 1934 pistols, keep an eye out for the Kriegsmarine stamp which triples the value of the pistol at least. It a larger stamp than the normal Waffenamt with the "Dirty Bird" over a large "M". Kriegsmarine pistols are more rare because most of German Naval activity was the U-boat fleet, only officers were allowed to carry, and there was an attrition rate of U-boat sailors was 70-80% (meaning most of these pistols are at the bottom of the Atlantic). I have a 1934 with this stamp, but there are more HSc pistols out there with the stamp.

I used to work with a guy in the 1990's who used to carry a Mauser HSC as his favorite carry gun. When I asked why, he told me the story and showed me the scar on his neck, he was a GI in Europe and they had several German soldiers that were surrendering and one pulled out that Mauser HSC and he was shot in the neck, and the bullet came out his back above his shoulder blade and there were a couple smaller scars with it, those were pieces of his dog tag chain when the bullet entered from the front it took a segment of the chain with it. After his buddies cut the German to pieces as he relayed to me and they took him to the field hospital, someone grabbed the Mauser HSC and gave it to him later on, and he carried it after he got back and got all the paperwork for it taken care of. I always wondered what happened to that gun, it had a wonderful story behind it.

I thought I'd mention that the recoil spring is semi captured on the HK4 barrel so that the springs of the conversion barrels cannot be confused with each other during reassembly. Each conversion barrel has its specific recoil spring attached for safety and convenience.

I'm guessing it was done to prevent snags. The Sig P230/232 both have a similar shape. The whole pistol has a lot of little CCW features, which seems odd to us now because it weighs as much as a brick compared to modern CCW weapons.

Good video. I had an HK4 in .32 with the .22lr kit for a while. It was a neat little gun in .32ACP. I could never get the .22lr conversion to work properly. Since I'm in Maine, I had offered to let Ian from Forgotten Weapons to do a video on it if he had time while here. Regrettably, he declined the offer. One thing you didn't touch on was the caliber conversion process. Not having another caliber to convert to, it's understandable. The neat way in which the gun converts to fire .22lr is by swapping the breach face around. Maybe you plan on doing a more detailed video on the HK4 in the future.

Thanks for this video. I have an HK-4 in .380 & .22 that I bought new in the early 80’s as a backpacking/camp gun. It is a great light weight little gun. I have found that it has no issues cycling with standard 380 loads but it won’t cycle with low power .22 loads. Not enough punch to effectively cycle the action. Currently won’t cycle with sub sonic .22 but works well with normal power 1260 FPS rounds. Enjoy your videos, look forward to more!

Great video. Not enough info on these little guns--especially as it relates to the safety/decocking function. AFAIK, H&K was founded by engineers who left Mauser after the war... and obviously took their designs with them. I think Alex Seidel was the guy who designed HSc and later the HK4. I also remember reading that Manurhin was actually making the post-war HSc under the Mauser name for a while (not sure if that's true). Then some company in Italy (Gamba?) made a version as well. I've heard the post-war .380 HScs weren't very reliable. Which kinda sucks... because they look like really cool guns. Anyway, thanks for the video.
@MaxResDefault2600
@MaxResDefault2600 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Seidel took his gun design with him from Mauser to H&K. Apparently the decocking feature was an attempt to get around Walther's PPK decocking patent. I'm not really a fan of it, but I guess that's the best they could do given the circumstances. I personally love how the slide goes forward when you load a new magazine, and contrary to popular belief if there's not a magazine loaded and you want to close the slide, all you have to do is pull back on the slide a bit and it'll go forward without having to insert an empty mag. The Gamba ones are apparently not very good, but I believe the Manurhin ones are. They made good PPKs so it stands to reason their HSc is good as well. The quality on my german HSc is amazing. Similar to the PPK, the 380 versions seem to have issues because of their blowback design being pushed to the limit, along with post-war production sometimes being sketchy.

I owned an HSc in 1965. It had a high gloss commercial blue finish, all serialized parts, including the spare magazine, a leather shoulder holster which included a pouch for the spare mag., plus factory paperwork. All German military markings. It was a beautiful piece. That pistol was very concealable. After leaving the service I sold it, using the money to purchase an S&W 2" Chief for an off duty weapon. I wish I still had it

What the fuck are you talking about? German companies still produce good guns but if you have a shitty company leadership with cost cutting measures everywhere and getting idiots to work on gun designs plus using customers as testers, you get something like the P365. Also the P365 isn't made either in Germany nor Switzerland so your whole point is moot.

The HSc was produced under licence by Renato Gamba in Italy until at least the 1990's, or possibly later. Only difference from the original was it fired from a 13 round double stack magazine. Available in.32, .380ACP, or even the little known 9mm "Police" round (9x18 German round based on the Makarov round)

Somewhat unknown firearm it seems, good coverage MAC. I have yet to see one in a gun store in my area.Something also to note; the HK 4 was issued by the German customs police (Zollpolizei) in .32 ACP for a time. There was also a exact copy made by the French MAS gun factory, for use by the (West) Berlin customs police. The agreement partitioning Berlin prohibited the use by authorities there of German made firearms. So they had French factories make them exact copies of the current German issue pistols. According to the Blue Book, about 500 of the MAS guns were imported into the USA in .22 and or .32. Cited from remtek dot com.I only want to mention this because I believe its the only HK firearm made outside of Germany, which I had the chance of firing. Very interesting!

After years of servicing HK weapons, I would highly recommend not shooting the HK4 in .380. The lightweight aluminum receiver has proven to not be able to stand up to that amount of recoil impulse. The lack of availability of the polymer recoil buffer (not mentioned during the disassembly portion of this video) is another area of concern for all owners. Ofter, I have found owners shooting their pistols without the recoil buffer, resulting in the receivers cracking. As for the safety discussion, an internal look at the safety mechanism will show that when the safety is on, the firing pin is rotated out of position, so that if the hammer fell, it would not be struck. With the safety off, the firing pin rotates into alignment with the hammer and the breach face opening. Also interesting with the breach face, is that it is reversible, one side for .22 and the other side for the other three calibers and there is a corresponding opening for the firing pin to be positioned for either center fire or rim fire. The caliber conversion process would have been a nice addition to this video, or a follow on.

The downside of that aluminum frame on the HK is that it doesn't hold up that well to .380. Once the little buffer at the front of the frame wears out and people shoot it without replacing the buffer, the frames will crack. I found one of these little HKs in a used gun case for $300 once, but when I got it home and took it apart, sure enough the buffer was gone and the frame was cracked. Just touching the crack ever so slightly cased chunks of metal to break off. Sadly nothing could be done to repair this piece of history and I had to return it. I thought about keeping it as a non-shooter, but $300 is a bit much for a wall hanger. I took it back to the retail store, to see if they would give me a partial refund, but unfortunately, due to liability concerns, their legal department wouldn't do that, as they were afraid I might be dumb enough to shoot it with cracked frame. So, sadly I just had to get a full refund and I'm sure this gun ended getting destroyed. One of the few HK handguns missing from my collection. I'm wondering if I'll ever come across another...but if I do, I'll be sure to check the frame for cracks more closely before purchasing.

I'd like to know exactly how reliable it really is..

I love the old military firearms. I also love the modern day stuff coming out of Germany, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Turkey, hell there's a ton of good weaponry made both in and out of the United States. No, I didn't forget to give props to Austria. I just have a tendency towards wordy commenting. Yup, did it again.. #GunslutsLoveEmAll

Nice vid. The Hsc has the looks ie art deco and the HK4 lost that and no doubt sales. Cheers
