@@tiredgardener He is right although it wasn't a live fire exercise but in a real battle where another challenger 2 destroyed it, but the issue at the same time is the Challenger 2 really hasn't been that much in war either. So it is a great tank, but any tank can be destroyed. Otherwise they have been badly damaged to the point of harming the crew, no tank is perfect. "25 March 2003: A friendly fire ("blue-on-blue") incident in Basra in which one Challenger 2 of the Black Watch Battlegroup (2nd Royal Tank Regiment) mistakenly engaged another Challenger 2 of the Queen's Royal Lancers after detecting what was believed to be an enemy flanking manoeuvre on thermal equipment. The attacking tank's second HESH round hit the open commander's hatch lid of the QRL tank sending hot fragments into the turret, killing two crew members. The hit caused a fire that eventually ignited the stowed ammunition, destroying the tank. This is the only Challenger 2 to be destroyed on operations." "August 2006: An RPG-29 capable of firing a tandem-charge penetrated the frontal lower underbelly armour of a Challenger 2 commanded by Captain Thomas Williams of The Queens's Royal Hussars south east of al-Amarah, southern Iraq. Its driver, Trooper Sean Chance, lost part of his foot in the blast; two more of the crew were slightly injured. Chance was able to reverse the vehicle 1.5 mi (2.4 km) to the regimental aid post despite his injuries. The incident was not made public until May 2007; in response to accusations that crews had been told the tank was impervious to the insurgents' weapons, the MoD said "We have never claimed that the Challenger 2 is impenetrable." Since then, the explosive reactive armour has been replaced with Chobham Armour and the steel underbelly lined with armour as part of the Streetfighter upgrade as a direct response to this incident." "6 April 2007: in Basra, Iraq, a shaped charge from an improvised explosive device (IED) penetrated the underside of a tank resulting in the driver losing a leg and causing minor injuries to another soldier"

The Challenger 1’s most significant tank kill came at this time, and has been (mostly) well-documented. A Challenger with the callsign 11B fired at an Iraqi main battle tank from a distance of more than 5,100 meters - just above three miles - with an armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot round, the longest tank-on-tank kill ever. Although the 5,100 meter distance is what is often recorded in history books, at least one British tanker who was in the battle says the kill came at only 4,700 meters, just shy of three miles. If he’s right, It would still be the longest tank-on-tank kill and would be no less impressive, considering the tank’s operation range is 1,200 meters, more than a third of that distance. Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi Army failed to take out a single Challenger 1 tank and the only ones that didn’t make it through the entire battle did so because of technical issues, not due to enemy action the Challenger was however credited with 300 T72 kills.

Why not give them enough weapons to end the war rather than keeping it on.
@nickbakker2200
@nickbakker2200 Жыл бұрын
Because weapons alone aren't enough to win war and because offensive warfare is much more costly than defending and it would deplete Western stocks. Assuming that the Russians have consolidated their defenses and are in a better state than in September, Ukraine would need a lot more material that the West just can't give at the moment. On top of that, all the materials require trainings and logistics trains which are no easy feat to set up. On top of that, with Russian defenses consolidated, to maximize your succes you need strong combined arms capabilities. That is to say, strong integration and combination of land (tanks, artillery and infantry), air and naval forces which is also not easy and is a weak point of the Russians too. The problem for both sides is that neither side is able to effectively use their Airforce because neither side has and is able to gain air superiority over all of Ukraine. Russia can also for now mobilise a lot more manpower and in the short term can be more risky with starting offensives, though likely at an extremely high human cost. So far they've suffered an estimated 150-200k combined killed, wounded and missing in action.

Question is: where are those 1000+ soviet era tanks that ua got before the invasion? And if the most of those 1000 ua tanks got destoyed then how the hell those 100 western tanks would make a big impact on the battlefield with more than 1000km frontline length???

The soviet tanks are crap so ukraine dosent realy have an ability to push forward without significant losses, just like how russia is loosing troops now. However Western tanks are much better and along with other systems being sent will give ukraine an ability to break through the russian defences at different points, not just all across ukraine

The Russians can do reverse engineering on the old M1A2 that is why the U.S is not sending Ukraine the M1A2 SEPv3 and the ongoing modernization to SEPv4. Russia will need more access to more faster micro chips in order to make some modernization of their military. The sanction is severely depleting that capabilities.
