Here it is, the new project Mini. Found on E-bay but I lost the auction only to later find the higher bidder messed the seller around so it was offered to the next highest bidder...... Me. The Mini is a 1997 Rover Cooper MPI and has been off the road in a garage since 2007! It's what some might call a barn find.
In this update strip the front end completely then cut it out including the wings, front panel, A panels flitch panels and scuttle panels. In the process I remove the dash and top dash rail.

Your approach is as sound as it gets I.e. work from scuttle forwards, done a few over the years. Great thing about the Mini is that it is all cosmetic anyway with the subframe carrying the suspension and taking care of alignment etc. So if it looks right, it is! Oh and the front subframe mounts where the front panel bots on gives another useful alignment point. Good luck!

I was thinking of turning the front end into an armchair as it's the perfect shape for it. I've seen Mini trailers as well. They use the lower half of a Mini to make them. Quite a clever idea.

Good idea cutting the front end off. It saves hours of drilling out spot welds.

Genius idea with the hinge drill holes. 3mm that's perfect size if you wish to use clicos

How about a TV stand, quick release grill with shelf behind for sky/virgin etc box, jobs a good'n! U can still have the working headlights! Lol. Great work, didn't take you long hey, still must be a bit unnerving starting the first cut!

That's a great idle with drilling the bonnet hinges . I be doing that will make any future jobs a lot easier that need the bonnet removed.. .. Do you.think you will keep spout Keith or be selling to fund a furture project..

Can you comment on the need to replace these panels versus just patch/repair them? Is it just to make a better aesthetic or is there too much deterioration for repair?

The only way to get rid of rust is to remove it completely, you can rub back, treat and repaint but it will come back unless you cut it out or replace the panels

A pity about the bumper. Mini Spares do a higher quality one which is very close to the original - part DPB10166 I bought one a few months ago and it fits well. Cost £63 including tax and delivery when I bought mine.

Interesting how the later minis don’t have radiator on the passenger side and the vents in the inner wing. Instead looks to be mounted at front of engine with an electric fan.

Yes, they moved to a front mounted radiator and electric fan to meet drive by noise regulations in the late 90's

Just a clean up really and leave it standard although originally I did think of buying a Mini Sport Cooper S Works kit and convert it
