A short video to show the process of making millefiori patterns in polymer clay.
This is a very ancient technique that has been around since the 6th Century. More recently it became associated with Venetian glasswork producing paperweights with tiny glass flowers - the origin of the name millefiori (literally 'a thousand flowers').
It has now been "borrowed" by polymer artists like me - the resulting small blocks of clay have a unique design that runs through the clay like the words through a stick of rock.
These 'canes' are then sliced and used as decorative veneers in hundreds of different applications.
The patterns are unique and are usually impossible to recreate.

This is freaking BRILLIANT!!! I appreciate all the hard work and dedication to real time work..... but to have it compressed into a video like this, is fantastic for the intermediate level makers, like myself!

I agree. A lot of haters here who don't know where the pause and rewind button is. I'd watch a video like this any time, better than somebody jabbering on too long.

Beautiful and well done Where did you get those section dividers on the pasta machine

Thanks Renee! The dividers came with the machine - it’s an Artway Dream Machine. Made in the USA, expensive, and slow to get over here to the UK. But it has been a great workhorse and I have abused it for years without it suffering any ill effects!

Hi Sheila - thank you! It’s called an Artway Dream Machine. It’s specifically made for polymer clay and they’re made by Polymer Clay Express in the USA. It was expensive (and I bought it four or five years ago!) a bit of a faff to get it over here to the UK, but it has been great. I condition and process quite a lot of clay at a time, so it’s quite a heavyweight, industrial piece of kit - if you’re making smaller canes, it might frustrate you because the thinnest sheet isn’t particularly thin. But it’s fairly bomb proof and very easy to clean. I assume they’re still making them!

Sorry Sally! It wasn’t really meant to be a teaching video, more to explain the process to people who (understandably!) find it hard to visualise! If you’d like a proper tutorial that you can work through at your own pace, my 20pp tutorial covers most of what I used to teach in workshops and is available here:
