What's interesting is that a lot of millennials started out with the boomer mindset of "Sure, I'll do a bit extra if it helps out", but quickly learned that there was absolutely no reward for doing so any more, and that in all liklihood the person who asked you to do it is going to claim all the credit.

A good company/manager will want to retain and upskill good staff. Boomer/X does open doors, if it's not then talk to employer about career progression (some managers need it spelt out directly) still not getting anywhere? gather xp and move on (these tend to be high turnover businesses and not good to work for, do you research. gen y&z approach gets you in a stagnant rut career wise and that's fine if that's all you want, just don't whinge about it. Older ones yes, younger ones...not so much. Personally I take the X approach, entered a completely new industry and got 2 promotions in 15 mths and currently being mentored for a third. X approach of opened doors over my colleagues with more experience than I have but keep saying no, are unreliable, or do bare minimum of their job description and still screw it up. Management and senior staff talk, if an internal position is coming up we say this person might be interested because they are doing alot of extra covers, Or that person would be good cause they are accurate'. Gen y/z will get you no-where career wise and we get sick of fixing up the half-assed 'work' they do, honestly I would rather be under-staffed with accurate/reliable people than full staffed with minimum effort types who create more problems than they solve and who's work needs to be double-checked

I've also seen it where not only is there no reward, but if you are a full timer doing the work of two people and a manager but don't have the title so you don't have the authority to ask for help and then get in trouble when not everything gets done.

I wrote a simple "no thank you" to another department manager's email attempting to get me to cover for my colleague who was on maternity leave once. Note that we already had someone assigned to that role and they have a temporary employee to support them so asking me was just stupid. I CCed my manager and upper management, and my manager thought it was hilarious because I just replied with the one line. The task was not assigned to me not to mention there was already a person in charge, that manager just thought the guy was slow. It still wasn't my problem 😂 I'm a Millennial.

Early Millennial here (just a few years off from Gen X). My old boss would always ask me to do admin tasks to help him out. I would do them gladly, thinking I was expanding my usefulness and learning stuff to help me be more valuable and get promoted. Later when I offered to do the admin work as part of my job he told me no. Apprently I wasn't qualified. When I pointed out I'd been doing it for years, he told me "yeah you shouldn't have been". So after all that, I had gained skills I wasn't allowed to use to move up. Lame.

I actually think the guy portrays Gen X in the best light. They seem to find the right balance. I don’t know if that’s his intention. Gen X is hardworking without living to work like boomers. They are willing to go the extra mile if they are compensated or at least get favors in return for helping others out. They are diplomatic, etc. Others may have to read between the lines with them.
@Jennifer_Lewis_Beach_Living
@Jennifer_Lewis_Beach_Living 5 ай бұрын
That’s true. Gen X still has the strong work ethic, but they don’t kill themselves like the Boomers, and they’ll only do it if they’re getting something out of it like extra compensation or a quid pro quo. If they’re not, then they are the masters at passive-aggressiveness. Person tries to call - they don’t answer. A few hours later - “I’m so sorry. I saw you tried to call but I was SWAMPED in meetings.”

Aka Gen x works for free and loses their personal time for companies that fire them right before their pension times. The company has people for the job and only give it to Gen x because they will do it for no cost. Then they fire the department whoms job it actually is and permanently take advantage of Gen x. Then everyone that's not Gen x in that same department quits leaving Gen x to struggle because they think they are close to their pension. Then right before pension time they higher a whole bunch of Gen z with millennial bosses and fire the Gen x person. This is why a lot of Gen x people are not going to retire and it's sad because they really listened to boomers.

@@BigSambo83 In my experience, no. It doesn’t matter how helpful you are, or how much you suck up. Bosses are not thinking about that one time “this employee helped the company out.” They are thinking about how they can leverage a benefit, to get what they want/need in that specific moment. If it’s between your past loyalty, and an employee that can provide a specific advantage that same day, they will always choose the other employee. That’s exactly why boundaries have become such a popular topic. Too many people get run ragged in the workplace, only to be passed up and pushed aside when they have needs. If anything, bosses respect boundaries more. They know that you need more incentive to make things better for them personally. When the time comes, they have that incentive ready.

Go try to blow that fart at a naive 18 year old. (Good luck, though, because all us old people have warned them!)

All these people should first ask their boss to ok the new assignment before agreeing to take it. If you just agree to it, that could get you into trouble, or colleagues could start taking advantage of you. That happened to me at one job I had. People from other departments started asking me to do little translations or proofreading. Being new and quite naive, I said yes without thinking about it. When my boss found out, she went apoplectic. That work should have gone to our freelance specialists who were under contract. Instead my colleagues found it more convenient to send the things to me, who they didn't have to pay. Oops. From then on, I asked colleagues to email all such requests to my boss for approval first. You'd be amazed how quickly they stopped coming.

Employers today expect us all to have the work ethic of boomers while being paid a fraction of the salary. I'd gladly perform tasks outside my job description if I didn't have to get a part time job on top of my main job just to afford a place to live and three home cooked meals a day.

Late boomer here. I have always did the work that had to done. And that included covering the workload of subordinates if they were overloaded. Helped out colleagues from other departments if it would ultimately helped my department. I now make a six figured salary - kept pushing for increases - never turned down. Brought up my subordinates pay at the same time. Always worked more than 40 hrs. per week. There are trade offs for sure - but always saying no may not serve you well in the long term. When you want something - have some leverage.

I am not taking on more work because of their lack of management. They need to handle it themselves as the manager. If it's not in my job description I will NOT do it. Companies don't show appreciation anymore. Back in the boomers days, they would get rewarded with promotions and pay raises. Today.. our rewards is a damn pizza party. It's bs. Loyalty means nothing.

Patient coordinator, there's a reason every t-shirt about our job is less "A nurse is a hero" and "I'm a patient coordinator, end me". But I love what I do and where I work. However, I recently had a new technician try to pass some of his work onto me (he's sweet but definitely a bit bossy), and I sent back "Sorry, that's actually the responsibility of the exam techs! Let me know if you need any help with training, I used to be an exam tech and definitely know my way around".

If I'm an employee and its an appropriate request from my line, I will take the attitude that I'll learn something from it amd do someone a favor, but if it jeopardizes a deliverable or if it's from way outside my reporting line, I will make damn sure that my direct boss knows about it. I've had that happen as a head of marketing from a VP and had to go to the partners in the business to whom I reported to referee. If I'm a contractor on controlled hours and deliverables or a consultant with a defined scope of work, I will say it should be cleared with my direct report unless it comes from his or her boss.

Gen X here - if Robert has helped you at work in the past - it might be time to thank him for the favor - if Robert is a great worker and/or may help you at some point and/or has influence over anything inside the company, it might pay off later to do him a favor now. Life isn’t clear cut, especially when it comes to building relationships and growing a business or project. It’s also a compelling reason to have passion for what you do, as well as look at your job as a learning experience each day.

Late millennial here. I got roped into doing some other departments' monkey work once. I turned to the product manager who roped me into it when I got the job done and told them: "I don't know why they didn't just do it off the bat. They could've done it better in less time than they took to train me in it. That was a glorious waste of their time and, more importantly, mine. Tell them to get their own stuff squared away." The product manager was shocked at my wording. My manager asked me about the situation later and I told them the same thing and they just said: "Yeah, that was a huge waste of your time. Good job setting that boundary firmly. If they push again send them my way." (For what it's worth, I'm on VERY good terms with the other product manager despite that situation. They respected me more for it afterwards.)

Gen X aren't thrilled with extra work, but we were taught not to rock the boat. We think before saying no, and have learned that procrastination (passive aggressiveness) can work to our benefit. We aren't saying no, but we're not jumping on it either. We take our time, feel out the pros and cons, and will proceed with caution. If we think there's a benefit to doing the extra work (raise, or some kind of compensation etc) we'll do it. If we think someone else will take credit for it, we hold off until someone else is asked to do the job, we can pass it off, or it's dropped. We never go into a position thinking we have all the answers, we sit back and watch...waiting for just the right moment to be revealed. It's a balancing act.

I would prefer to ask "are we changing the terms of our agreement with this new workload?" Got to be professional and lay down the ground work for an increase in pay along with new challenges. After all if I'm going to be selling my skills for a job then I best get paid for using my skillsets, time, and experience. You can't show emotions in front of the corpos they will use it against you and tell you things like "we are like a family here" with a false smile.
