They taught us in business school that most people spend their salary on their lifestyle and save nothing that isn't in a 401k. I know plenty of doctors, lawyers, high end engineers, etc. etc. that are high income but probably have less than $5000 cash on hand at any given time because it all goes down the toilet on car payments, vacations, boats, and eating out 4 nights a week.

Big problem is pressure from society like wearing the name brand clothing which is a giant rip off n stuff like that. The big thing most don't realize dopamine is like a drug so when u constantly buy things n basically live beyond your means or even if ur loaded when u buy to much stuff ur tolerance for dopamine becomes stronger which makes dopamine effect you less so ur less happy n thats how u get these super rich ppl that are unhappy in life for example johnny depp n amber heards relationship. Like what would they have to be mad at about making eachother miserable? Both were successful, famous, and rich but always want more cause of the dopamine tolerance is ridiculously high after years n years of getting everything you want.

If I make 10k a year, I'll be making the most I've made ever, at 30+ in a small town where only part time jobs exist. Full time got shut down because of the laws that make them pay benefits. I can go work in a factory, but it's mostly felons and druggies. There is no safety checks, because if the person gets hurt, they just drug test them. Wiring electronics in a puddle of water type hazards. (Worked temporarily in one, and people were nodding off (drugs), and the filtration system that was supposed to pull toxic chemicals from the air...didn't work. You couldn't stay inside for more than a minute without getting high from fumes. Everybody was getting chest infections, so I'm like 'forget this' and went back to part time...which I then got fired from when I worked more than 40 hours...that THEY assigned me. They said 'you're supposed to tell me when you're near 40'. What asshats.) One of the felons in the factory cut my buddy for no reason. Just took a razor and sliced his hand open. Then pretended it was an accident. My buddy just left and went home, because weed was in his system. That's the environment fostered..where you can literally be attacked, and have to just deal with it. Props to my buddy, because there's no way I would have stayed cool. I'd have lured the guy outside. My buddy manages to stay out of trouble, whereas I usually get into trouble originally, and then the judge will throw it out or give me a small fine. If I ever make 20k a year, I'll have enough to survive well. At 50k, I can probably very easily escape poverty. (I can make 20k so long as they don't punish me for working the hours they assign) I manage to save money despite the low amount. If I ever got an honest to god shot at something good, I'd make the most of it.

I think this statistic of "55% millennials /w 250k, living paycheck to paycheck" is taken out of context. I am willing to bet that these earners are based in extremely high cost-to-live areas. As a result, their income becomes comparatively inflated. This is why you see Software Engineers in the midwest making 80k, while making 200k++ in others for the same role.

Also this is 50% of millennials who happen to make $250k a year, which probably exclusively includes people living in high cost inflated areas, and people who stumble into $250k spending it superfluously. Which why do we care? How many millennials do people think are making $250k a year? Like 3%? Did everyone forget that 70% of Americans can't afford a surprise $1000 cash purchase? Know what that means? 70% of Americans don't have an extra $1000. Why are we addressing how these handful of rich millennials define their wealth? Who goes a fuck?

@@syzyphyzhere's the Bloomberg article. It states the following: Living paycheck-to-paycheck doesn’t necessarily mean hardship, and LendingClub makes the distinction between those can pay their bills easily and those who can’t. Only a fraction of high earners -- roughly one in ten -- reported issues covering all their household expenses in April, according to the survey. So I take this to mean that many of these high earners are using all of their paychecks to pay their bills, but most are able to pay those bills without issues. The other 10% are living beyond their means and can't pay all their bills each month. The article continues: About 78% of Americans said they were doing okay financially or living comfortably -- the highest share since the Fed began running the annual survey in 2013. Still, one in nine respondents said that they wouldn’t be able to cover a $400 emergency expense by any means, including credit cards, borrowing from family or friends or by selling an asset. So, in a separate survey by the Fed, 78% of Americans say they're alright, but 11% couldn't afford a $400 emergency. So yeah take that for what you will, just adding a little context

Na I live and work in the NYC metro area. I can tell you that yes it's expensive hear but 250k after all taxes instill around 140k a year. These people are just bad with money.
@Omnip073n77
@Omnip073n77 2 жыл бұрын
@@appropriate-channelname3049 AFAIK NYC metro area is the Tri-State area between NY/NJ/PA (+CT). The disparity between the CoL is too high to compare. Some of the areas would necessitate inflated salaries, other's certainly wouldn't. To keep things on track, let's go with something like Brooklyn (where wages would be more inflated for geo-dependent roles). So let's go with your 250k / 140k take home in NYC (with high demand): For a decent apartment, you'll pay about 5k a month (not rent-controlled). That's 60k a year. 140k - 60k = 80k A lot of these millennials are also paying for things like student loans. 100k principal @ approx. 1100 a month. That's 13200 a year. 80k - 13k = 67k Now how about health insurance? A 25 year old, with low-deductible insurance, can expect to pay about 1k a month in NYC. That's another 12k a year. 67k - 12k = 55k Transportation? Expect about AT LEAST 500 a month across public transport and ride share/taxi. That's 6k a year. 55k - 56k = 49k ------------------------------------ If you choose to actually have your own car, increase that number to about 13k based on fuel, insurance, and parking. 55k - 13k = 42k ------------------------------------ Food? That's another 500 a month for groceries. 49k - 6k = 43k Dining out? If you're making 250k, you'll probably constantly meet people for food and drinks. If not, you'll probably make up the difference meeting friends. (In the real world, most people wouldn't move to NYC, making 250k, to stay indoors 24/7) I'd put this conservatively at 1k a month. 43k - 12k = 31k Fitness and Entertainment? A yuppie needs to stay healthy and cultured to be sharp and relevant. 31k - 3k = 28k Internet/Streaming? 28k - 2.5k = 26.5k Current-Gen Cell Phone Payment /w Plan? 26.5 - 3k = 23k These are pretty basic expenses IMHO. This doesn't include things like unexpected expenses, incidentals, clothing, electronics, handyman services/repairs, utilities, toiletries/cleaning supplies, etc. These could easily rack up another 10k a year. 23k - 10k = 13k TBH, I don't make anywhere near 250k... but I have more left over than this when comparing the same things while living elsewhere. Having a car, you'll probably break even. If you bring kids into the picture, that's going to make it much harder. You could argue that we could live in a cheaper rent-controlled building. I imagine they wouldn't do this for the same reasons the average upper middle class millennial doesn't move to low income areas. You could also argue that they could just cut out their dining/entertainment expenses. IMO this would defeat the entire purpose of having this unique "life experience" at this age (or however they frame it). I'm not trying to say we should start a charity for these people, but that the margins are still pretty tight. They're pretty much one bad day or one bad decision away from suffering for it, like the rest of us.

Destiny speaking truth... people making $150k/yr don’t have money problems. They have spending problems. On the poor side of economics now. People on SSi aren’t allowed to save up. If you do, your supposed to report it. Which can reduce your payments or eliminate them. You’re not supposed to invest any part of it. Making payments on a house, car, is all I can think of as an asset that is allowed. The system wants you to be dependent on them with no savings.

You can spend virtually any amount of money. There's always a better version of whatever you want to buy, so people don't think about how much they should spend, they think how much they can spend. The actual millionaires I've met live lives very similar to people who make $70k a year, household income. I swear to God, it's just media and advertising making people feel like they're a failure if they don't own the nicest things or go to the best places all the time. People will drive a beat up Honda civic for a decade, then start buying a new car every 3 years once they make enough to do that. My 72 year old grandfather has owned 5 cars in his entire life, and he's always had a working car. He just bought whatever was most reliable and took care of it. The man has been a multi millionaire my entire life, and you would never know it. His twin brother is the same way, and he is literally retarded. As in, severely mentally handicapped. He was in the special Olympics, not joking. He retired a few years ago with $3.7 million in his 401k, because he lived like most people do right when they get their first real job. Let that sink in. Admittedly, both of them made middle class incomes, so a lot of people would have to live more frugally than even them, but that isn't my point. My point is that your lifestyle does not need to change because you make more money.

So I’m probably one of those people who would respond to that survey as “paycheck to paycheck”. This year my wife and I will gross over 150k each (we’re both in SaaS sales) BUT we live “paycheck to paycheck” because we each have the majority of our pay either taken pre taxed into 401k’s or immediately invested into another post-tax vehicle upon each paycheck, because we both know a shopping spree at Gucci or some Y-3s are guilty pleasures of ours. So our stash is mainly “unliquid” and never plan on taking early penalties/paying investment taxes unless there’s a specific goal and timeframe in mind

It’s really not even that hard to burn that much money, especially if your a one income home. 150k post tax for easy math 3500 rent and 1000 car payment are 54k. If you eat out in a trendy area with a few drinks several times a week and shop at Whole Foods say you average $100 a day obviously some will be more some will be less. That’s another 36k that’s 90k for rent car and food, then you have car insurance, utilities, some sort of entertainment budget, shopping, vacations. And you’ve all but spent that money. I know people making not quite that much but are broke as a joke because they spend spend spend. I have a friend that spends over 500 a month on hair and nails alone between products, styles, and colors. It’s insane

@@yobrodontshoot1130 to be honest I don’t know how much money my parents were making. We lived in Austin (mind you this is in the 90s, so it was nowhere near as expensive as it is today). But our yearly vacations were going camping at the local lake for a weekend or going to six flags. I shared a bedroom with my sister until I was about 10 when I emptied our garage and set it up as my own room. We always had food, water, quality shelter, and luckily we were all relatively healthy. I thought of low class as the more decrepit housing where kids were getting into drugs very young (like elementary school) and high class was the kids I knew who would take an out of state vacation every year and lived in what I thought at the time were mansions. The high class I knew definitely wasn’t the ultra-rich that live in Austin now, but they were very well off for the time.
