Fantastic interview. Loved hearing Millie's behind the scenes insider scoop and was so relieved to see 'Athelflaed' looking alive and well. One thing: if the Mercians trusted Uhtred enough to be their lord, why would they not have trusted Uhtred as be husband to the Lady of Mercia? I had such deep admiration for Athelflaed's willingness to fight her own battles literally, but I never agreed Athelflaed could not have her throne and Uhtred too. Tragic. Aethelflaed's death in Uhtred's arms made me cry.

This scene at 1:04:06 just broke my heart, just watched it today. It's hard to imagine Aethelflaed gone when I was hoping they would live together with Uhtred once they find a new ruler for Mercia. Aethelflaed and Uhtred's chemistry is beautiful to the point I've shipped them together at the beginning when I first saw her practicing sword fighting. I wish they ended up happy together in the end. 😭

I loved Athelflaed and Uhtred's relationship up until it became a love affair - I've always had a hard time shipping them and it's not a rational thing at all. I guess the idea he knew her as a child and then got sexual with her makes it all a little... icky for me. I'm not a prude, I can guarantee that... but then I haven't read the books, so maybe they lay the groundwork better for A and U's romantic evolution. Just from watching the show I shipped Aethelflaed with Erik like mad (poor frustrated me!). He was pretty much my favourite character and I'm a sucker for love affairs between people from different cultures. I think all of humanity's problems should be solved with one trans-cultural relationship at a time, haha!

I've been a Cornwell fan since I can remember and the Sharpe series, King Arthur (Warlord) series, and 100 Years War series are all amazing but still pale in comparison to the Last Kingdom (Uhtred/Saxon series). Aethelflaed was so awesome in the books I was afraid it wouldn't be possible to cast her correctly but when I saw Millie's portrayal in season 2 I was amazed at how perfect she was for the part.

Shows that are based on a literary source have way more of a chance of NOT becoming weaker in their later seasons, which is one of the reasons TLK is awesome from beginning to end. There are exceptions of course (for instance, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are masterpieces from their first to last season even without being based on novels), but there does seem to be an extra narrative strength and balance when the material was conceived as literature beforehand. As for Aethelflaed, I hope sooner or later a biopic gets made about her! I mean, apart from TLK. She's a remarkable enough historic character to deserve a story all of her own!

Wow..... One thought I can't escape. What if the Last Kingdom writers were the writers on the last season or two of Game of Thrones? It may have had an awesome ending like the Last Kingdom did. The Last Kingdom held the bar HIGH from the 1st episode to the very last. Outstanding actors, directors, and every other person helping on this series. Didn't like it they made Athelstan the Gay Idiot, lazy writing with no real historical basis. It should have been a season not a rushed two our tv movie. the battle was less epic than the show ? show went downhill after Millie's character died.

@@danielaf1487 Him being gay didn’t bother me. It’s the fact that he was raised by Uhtred and would’ve learnt honour, service and well, cunning. He was an awful character. Weak of character, easily manipulated and therefore destructive. Like, I’m aware that they had to base the movie on some sort of insular conflict between Wessex and Uhtred and co. but Aethelstan was just so changed from season 5, a whole different person. It seemed off.
