@KellieEatsCrayons3 жыл бұрын
#9 - Creating Boundaries - Yes!!! This is so critical and often overlooked (thank you for this reminder!). Erin, you are truly vibrant, beautiful, knowledgeable, and inspiring .... and it’s my hope that you become comfortable with saying “no” to the barrage of requests for freebies. Here’s why - you already DO give so much ‘free’ knowledge and insights and actionable information for any SELF-starter that you don’t need to justify saying NO to someone asking for *more* free personal services. I mean, you can’t really blame people for wanting a little undivided attention from someone they respect and admire, but ultimately their validation is not your responsibility. It’s totally appropriate to have/set THOSE boundaries, which actually empowers the person asking for it. (Take it from someone who is (was 🤨) co-dependent AF, and this is all said with only love and respect!) Maybe some of your responses could be something like “Yes, I definitely value community and sharing my knowledge and experience with others - which is why I’m very committed to putting t out so much ‘free’ content already (in my KZbin videos, blogs, IG posts, etc.) and most people find them helpful enough to make improvements for themselves with this content ....” and so on. You can easily point to the plethora of “free” things you already produce to empower others on their journey. In this way, you aren’t saying “no” to the aspect of offering free (unpaid) assistance .... just “no” to any additional pulls for your time. Also, maybe you can put it back on them in a good way by asking “hey, if you tell me specifically what you are wanting/needing that isn’t already in my videos or content, maybe my team and I can find a way to create a new video or post that addresses your situation and we can help many others in the process!” With this, one of two things should happen - 1. those who are truly serious about why they are asking for your personal free (spare) time, meaning they really do have something they feel overwhelmed by, then they are more likely to take you up on this offer and do the simple task you asked them to do, which gives you an opportunity to help them (and others) in a way that doesn’t detract from your current strategies for creating content - it gives you a new topic to work into what you already do, and within your existing schedule/routine. Make sense? 2. and/or -you don’t hear back from them for whatever reason (they didn’t get what they wanted from you, or they didn’t have a focused enough question/situation to work with, or they didn’t feel like doing any homework by responding to your simple task - which should tell you ALL you need to know about that one-way transaction. 🙄 If they aren’t willing to do a simple task you ask of them, how can they justify asking the same of you? JS 🤷♀️. Anyway ..... here are some of my favorites quotes to (hopefully) inspire/empower you with this important point of boundaries ..... hope this helps! 💚 “The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.” ~ Henry David Thoreau “When you learn how much you’re worth, you’ll stop giving people discounts.” ~ multiple authors cited (unsure of original author?) “If someone throws a fit because you set boundaries, it’s just more evidence the boundary is needed.” ~ unknown “Boundary setting helps you prioritize your needs over other people’s wants.” ~ Lauren Kenson

I know this is an old video but I’m still going to comment lol. I’m an indigenous and decolonizing paradigm researcher and leadership coach. On your point about fear, I want you to think about the limitations that language has. Not necessarily English as a language, but as someone who speaks 2 other languages, there are words that have no translation in English and that’s a limitation to spoken language. Fear as a word can be used to describe a lot of things, the least of which being scared. Describing how wind feels blowing on your skin sometimes can only be experienced to be understood, there’s no translation for that. Sometimes we think we have a fear because that’s the only word we know how to describe what you feel, but that doesn’t mean you are even feeling fear. You’re just using that word. Sometimes you aren’t even afraid/fearful/scared/anxious/nervous - all the synonyms to fear. You are feeling that one word that has no English word to describe it 💡 so, don’t beat yourself up that you have “fears” is my point 🤎
