I have seen it up close when he was still playing challenger tournaments and the serve is wicked even back then

I think the secret is that Raonic keeps his wrist laid in all the way from preparation to just before contact thus enabling a huge pronation :-)
@exinmate10 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agreed with you more.
@dkangan10 жыл бұрын
Actually that helps him release into more extension of the wrist pre-contact smoothly and without effort, which in turn juices the release of the racket into contact. None of it would mean a thing, though, if he did not have the smooth flow throughout and the good internal rotation of the shoulder as he releases into contact.

that's pretty much whats pronation

This is called supination and most tennis instructors are too stupid to know how it works.

His server is amazing! I wanna try to copy and master his server....

That is an eastern backhand grip I use also in serving, if not extreme version of that (me). But yeah, I will go and try less extreme variations and a good old continental grip now again finally to decide between them: pros and cons... there is always a trade off in these matters of choice.
@chrisf2473 жыл бұрын
If you look at the position of his hands/fingers, I think his grip may still be continental. He just breaks the wrist, probably to make sure he's not flexing the muscles in his forearm.

thanks for the great post Raonic is a beautiful player and should win some slams very soon
@mikthe20046 жыл бұрын
Comment is 5 years old and Roanic has won 0 slams so far. Not likely he will now either, although like you I thought it seemed like he was getting closer.................

mikthe2004 Too dummy meaning stiff, clumsy, slow as well as too predictable and one-dimensional for a GS title, I am afraid.

He’s a powerful serve player , but that is about it. The other players are too clever and smart for him

What would improve over this already excellent video is IMO a Raonic "regular" serve (above 150kmh) SUCCESSFULLY returned. Wed 01 Jul 2015 14:35 GMT

Some say to keep the palm down on the backswing but Raonic does not. He keeps his arm supinated on the backswing.
@chuckdeless98912 жыл бұрын
Palm down helps how? maybe too much racket movement before contact.

Big time modeled after the Sampras serve from takeback onwards!

I feel that it is 70% Sampras serve. What do you think ?
@thebigmonstaandy66442 жыл бұрын
@@redcola3965 Sampras had different style : he had no break in trophy position. Kyrgius has also no break,but he uses another stance

Having the racquet face open seems to give him more pronation - more than 180 degrees, since he's moving from a flat racquet facing him to a racquet that's at an angle facing him. I've tried this and it's proven to be a 'safer' serve, although I'm not sure if I got more speed, which should come with more pronation. Any REAL expert here willing to comment?
@MrSuperOurs Жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert but I'm a club level player. I've copied Raonic's serve motion for quite some time now, with great success. Was not easy at all at the beginning - the "forced" pronation from the preparation was weird but you get used to it. I'd recommend really working on getting the technique right, not involving much leg. The power will come from the legs , racquet speed and relaxation, not from the grip itself.
@mikthe20046 жыл бұрын
Raonic is 6'5" tall, and like anybody that tall, he has a good serve. I don't think his serve is particularly nice to look at, or classical in motion - but it works, and the bottom line is that's all that matters.

I'm being a hater I know but I don't see anything to get excited about. Just a simple motion than smash. Oh yeah, and he's ginormously tall. Nothing beautiful or acrobatic at all. But hey he does what works so more power to him.

foot fault! feet crosses the baseline before the racquet made contact with the ball.
@claytonb51787 жыл бұрын
Not a foot fault as long as his foot hits the ground after contact is made
