By far the best home device and the first that shows an even roasting, thanks!

Best DIY roaster idea I've seen. You could simplify the design quite a bit by just attaching the drill directly to the acorn nut on the left side of the crank shaft: 3-jawed chuck, 6-sided nut. Should work perfectly. If the free-wheeling crank handle would be a problem, just cut off all but a stub on the right side.

Thanks for sharing.. Cool little project :) This is by far one of the best DIY hacks I've seen . I just love the simplicity. Videos like this prove coffee roasting can be simple and easy.. No snobbery needed to make great coffee and enjoy it in the comfort of your own back yard. Kudos.

RPM calculation from time 9:54 to 10:04: 55 bar passes / 4 bars = 13.75 rotations / 10 seconds = 1.375 rps * 60s ≈ 82.5 rpm

I wanted to say thanks. I have been looking for a small simple coffee roaster I could build myself and yours fit the bill. I built it and added a $5 fan from Walmart to cool the beans. I built a bracket where the heat gun goes, just below the beans, and when the beans are done a remove the heat gun and put the fan in and it works great. THANK again.

Very cool demo with helpful information. A bit surprised at how fast you turned the beans but seems to have created a nice even roast.

I am in love with this idea. If it is still single, I want to marry it! This has me totally rethinking my StirCrazy / TurboOven project. Supposedly, it would be better to get to first crack a little sooner and draw out the time to 2nd crack more than the 30 seconds. The greatest thing about this setup is that you could have infinite control over the heat by changing the distance between the heat gun and the sifter.

The flour sifter agitator is pure genius, as the nice even roast shows. Great work. What's the largest batch size you've done successfully? It looks to me you could roast a full pound at a slower RPM on the agitator wires.
@Designedbyinstinct9 жыл бұрын
NickShears77 I think I did 1/2 pound batches? I forget now. It would do 1 lb I'm sure.

Hi there! I made your setup but with more crude materials for the stand and a corded drill. It worked quite well if there was a fast speed but at times the beans would get stuck and stop the agitating process.Did you ever have this problem at all? I have to admit, the beans I have do appear small to my eye and I'm very new to roasting though I am getting very even results! I'm guessing the issue with it getting stuck is due to the size. I have looked at other sifters and the design is the same. I'm guessing an alternate method is to either try larger beans, depress the lip where the stainless steel mesh meets the canister. Can you please let me know your thoughts? Thanks! I've learnt so much from you!

+Will Dang Yes, I have had beans stuck but not many. Does not really jam when hand cranking. Just mod the screen a bit and I'm sure it will work out!

Really cool.The screen on the bottom looks pretty thin have you had any problems with it ?

+01bassboy It's a thick stainless screen. No problems at all with wear.

Did you ever do the gasafier roasting system?

No I did not. I've got a new video space so I may revisit this setup.

Looking forward to see the gasafier setup.

Excellent design and video. More permanent than the popcorn roaster DIY style. Now use your genius to make a larger roaster - one that will do more than the 4-8 oz capacity of all the 'affordable' coffee roasters. Prices of 1lb+ roasters start around $1200 and go up from there. There is no reason for that in my view. All one has to do is scale up the roasting chamber primarily, and maybe get a little beefier on the heat gun. I've been thinking about it but I lack tools and DIY experience. The world needs a 1-2 lb DIY coffee roaster.

nice setup.. couple of things that can make it better.. buy roastmaster app for your smartphone(must have for any coffee roasting enthusiast), A weight scale to weight exact amount of beans to roast each time (will give you better consistency in roasting) and know weight loss of each post roast, and Finally if you think is practical add some sort alumunium arms around the rotator for better agitation or try fixing a pre-made roasting drum from sweet marias
@Designedbyinstinct7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the app would make it easy.

What keeps the chaff from falling into the opening in the heat gun? I have a similar set up and the chaff ends up coming back out as sparks.

Nothing. My heat gun seems to have enough flow to keep chaff out. I don't get sparks.

13:00 Green coffee is good for 100 years (when cool and dry). Roasted, they lose 40% of their benefit after the first 24 hours, and the remaining 60% fades over the next 6-12 days depending on the bean/roast. The lipids and other compounds in the coffee degrade with oxygen exposure. :)
