Milwaukee M18 FUEL Sawzall 2821-21 Update
One of the most widely used power tools in the construction industry would be the reciprocating saw. The first reciprocating saw was introduced by Milwaukee in 1951 with their SAWZALL® Reciprocating Saw.
Today, over 69 years later, we find the industry filled with full-size cordless reciprocating saws used on millions of projects on a daily basis. Users include demolition contractors, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, mechanical contractors - in both residential and commercial industries. Next to the drill, we can’t think of a power tool that touches so many different trades.
The Milwaukee Sawzall has had such an impact on the industry that it is now considered an eponym. An eponym is something whose name becomes a common reference word. Like Kleenex, Thermos, Xerox, and “Google it,” the Sawzall is now a name used to refer to any brand reciprocating saw.
Well it’s kinda wordy….and I’m not sure many people really care. Wouldn’t it be easier to just talk about them being the original “reciprocating” saw, and Sawzall has become a household term used by many to refer to a reciprocating saw.
What’s Different On This Gen 2 Sawzall
Lots of tool companies solicit feedback from their users and service center. Milwaukee takes it to the next level by going to the jobsites and seeking the feedback for their quest to provide performance-driven and trade-focused solutions with their tools.
The upgrades made to this Sawzall were a direct result of user feedback.
When I picked up this saw, the first thing I noticed was that it felt lighter, Milwaukee shaved a ½ pound off the tool but still beefed up common wear areas, while reducing weight in other areas. The second thing was that Milwaukee added more rubber over-mold on the saw which helps with vibration and long term grip.
The Gen 2 Sawzall still has a brushless Motor that provides the same 3,000 SPM but Milwaukee increased the stroke length1-1/4 inch. While 1/8-inch doesn’t seem like much this saw does cuts nail embedded wood, black pipe, and conduit faster.
Milwaukee improved the slider-crank mechanism better protecting it from water and dust ingress. This improvement was a result of direct feedback from users complaining that when cutting water-filled pipes their saw clamp and crank mechanism would get wet and the mechanism would eventually rust or seize. Water ingress and corrosion is common to the reciprocating saw landscape including all major competitors. The improvements Milwaukee made in this area can be viewed as an upgrade over existing reciprocating saws regardless of brand.
I can attest that on my older Sawzall the blade clamp sticks and is difficult to actuate, and the blade guard lever has broken off. Milwaukee replaced key parts of the blade clamp with stainless steel, for better wear and corrosion resistance.
The battery connection also has been reinforced battery with metal for improved durability and battery retention over the life of the tool.
The Extendable shoe got a HUGE upgrade and is both easier to actuate and more durable. One change you may or may not immediately notice is that the extendable shoe actuator button is recessed and covered by think rubber over-mold - protecting it from damage.

True story: I’m a HVAC installer and got a new helper for the summer, had to remove an old plenum and told him to get my reciprocating saw (Makita). He came back 5 min later and said, “I couldn’t find the saw you wanted but can we use your sawzall.”

I think overall Milwaukee in itself gets better with age.... they have been the best overall power tools on the market for decades and that's dating back to a time before brushless or fuel or any of the other upgrades they have installed....Milwaukee in my opinion and many others continues to just lead the industry with the best power tools on the market... I always state that in my own videos.... now two companies tools I have never used Are Hilti and festool so I don't know how they stack up to Milwaukee...But of all the major tool brands I have used There are none better than Milwaukee... thank you for all the great info can you give on your channel...It is always a pleasure and very informative watching your videos

There is no like the best "its all about personal preference". Milwaukee has many great tools but also alot of half cooked junk in its lineup. The future needs to be like Bosch and Metabo building battery Alliances. Bosch for example gives Fein now there ProCore Tech while the next 18V Fein will run on Core batterys. The same goes to LED Technology. Brennstuhl and LedLenser are now using 18V tech. Soon Stihl will join. Do you really think a company like Milwaukee will do a good job of building a trimmer as good as Stihl or a headlamp as good as LedLenser or a Multitool as good as Fein?

Boy this comment aged like milk. In a world where landscapers are going away from gas ya see more milwaukee string trimmers on landscapers trailers than any other. I own it and it's great plus the quick lock system makes it capable of almost anything. As for multi tools yes milwaukee may not have the fancy lever that Dewalt has but you can still change a blade just as fast. Milwaukee pushes innovation and fixes the few mistakes they make. You sure as shit won't find any fein in my work van. Milwaukee created the saw zall and all this time later they're still leading the industry.

@A Concord Carpenter / ToolBoxBuzz. Thanks Rob for your thorough review and take on the new Milwaukee FUEL Sawzall. Milwaukee listened and gave us both a articulating shoe that's also adjustable. Usually I get one and not the other. Thanks for pointing out how there's more overmolding for comfort. Adding stroke length makes for more efficient cuts. We'll see whether the added metal reinforcement for the battery helps over time as people use this new recip saw. Hope you, your staff, and your families stay safe and well.

I've been using the gen. 1 the last 1.5 year on my job sights in the oil field. From 6" schedule 80 steel pipe to 6" overgrown trees on my ROWs. I've literally put it through hell. Yes the clamp to blade gets sticky, but other than that Milwaukee has my money on the new generation. IF this one ever craps out.

I agree that Milwaukee has certainly lead the way in this tool (and has innovated in the 12V realm); however, all manufactures of recip saws have neglected the orbital function on their cordless models. And for Milwaukee this seems like a big lack. I wish I could get the power and orbital action of the super sawzawll and the 4 way shoe from Dewalt. My 2 cents for a perfect recip for demo and heavy work.

I can tell you right now that thing does not hold a candle to Metabo UVP Sawzall. No orbital feature? Try one with that feature, you won't look back. Also can't pick your speed? The hackzall is more useful than the sawzall IMO because it is one handed. Milwaukee makes some killer stuff, but not all their stuff is killer. If you need a demo tool I can guarantee you there is better cordless sawzall options. One big thing I don't like is that it uses a plastic lever, all industrial sawzalls seem to use the twist feature which is not as convenient, but is for sure a wear point or break point using the ABS plastic levers.
