That right there has me seriously considering changing to the Milwaukee system. I love my DeWalts, but the old 18v tools just don't have the power, compared to these new tools. It's a great time to be in the trades. The tools are so much better than what we were using in the 90s

Hi rob, just abit of info about the edge guide, if you look under the guide rails you will see two holes, those holes are there for you to screw on a straight piece of timber (ply wood is best as it holds it's lines better for longer than sawn timber, and held on with machine screws to hold it tighter without twisting the wood if overtightened) for added length. Just level the sole then put the piece of wood on it, it will level itself to the sole and screw through to secure it, half inch thick then the soles length by two inch wide minimum is best btw. But you do have duct tape / gaffer tape right, i find fluorescent blue works well with the milwaukee red.

Mate even the Makita brushed planer did ,it is still one of the most powerful planers available and with Makitas you can use the heavy duty resharpenable blades which are better than those fragile thin blades.

Great review. This made moving into this tool an easier move based on price. The only question that I have is the dust collection. It is stated to fit 1 1/2” hose but it is larger than that. Your review shows dust collect with a “boot” that is over the vacuum tube. Where does one gain that adaptor to deal with this tools off spray?

Thanks for the review Rob. I've been trying to decide for almost a year now if I want to go with Milwaukee or Makita, so I'm looking forward to more upcoming reviews. Luckily my old DeWalt tools that I use almost daily, just wont die. Or maybe not so lucky as it would finally force my hand, lol. One thing I didn't notice is the size of the battery you're using, I'm assuming it's 3ah. Doesn't really matter too much as it seems to have a decent run time either way, just curious. I recently got to use the Milwaukee cordless 1" SDS. That thing sucks down 4ah batteries like beer at a frat house.

Mines cutting on the wonk, and there doesn’t seem to be any way of adjusting the blades as the are fixed in a milled channel.

Great in depth video as usual Robert. Do you know if Dewalt will be releasing a new cordless planner to rival Milwaukee's, as I use both Dewalt and Milwaukee 18V platforms, however I was waiting to see if Dewalt plans on releasing a Brushless cordless model in 2016? Cheers.

A few amazon reviews say the base plate is aluminium and too soft, leading to scratching of the base plate and even getting mis-shapen, leading to snaping, whatever that means? did you find that at all?

2.0 Ah is too small for a tool like this. Use a 5.0 Ah or higher

Rob, I've watched a bunch of your videos, I like your reviews, and I actively seek you out when Team Red kicks out a new product. This video was the first in line when I tried to research my problem regarding my M18 planer, so I will pose my question to you, maybe you can help me. I've used my planer exclusively on doors. Never had the need to use it elsewhere. Recently I loaned it to my mom so she could level off a coffee table she was building, as her thickness planer was not wide enough to handle the main table top. She made a few passes, and the edge of the knives closest to the drive side was slightly out of true with the platen, less than 1/16", but obvious enough to the naked eye. Was this tool dropped or mishandled some time prior to her having used it (it would be a cold day in hell before she mistreated a tool, I did loan it to one person immediately before her and his toddler is a damn sneaky hooligan) or is the M18 planer just not suited to large flattening jobs? I always imagined you would use the fence and cut a reference on one side, and bring the rest of the surface into true with that first cut without the fence, but I never had a chance to try it. Is it a technique problem and it should be run at a skewed angle to travel? Hope you might have some tips or fixes, if not, thanks all the same, and keep 'em coming.

Andrew Drozd interesting find, my guess is that the machine has worn a bit on that side (possibly the side used most?) I recently took mine apart after is jambed from hitting a nail. I’m trying to remember what the spindle spins in- I’m sure it’s metal, held in place by plastic. It could also be a manufacturing issue. I don’t think of this tool as a finish machine like my shop joiner, your mom will absolutely have to get it close and sand the rest. I’ll pass ali g your concern to the folks at Milwaukee

I was never expecting it to be a final finish tool, I figured some washboarding from full width cuts, but a defined crease on one side was not what I envisioned being the outcome. Mom decided to cut her losses on it after 3 passes and a 4th after trying to align the blades with the tool she uses for her jointer blades, which don't have a keyway on the back. One of the original blades bit down hard after that and grenaded (no one was hurt) so she broke out the sanders and finished the table. Looks great. I installed a new pair of blades, and it has yielded the same results. My big hope for this was in helping to knock down a 3'x6' butcher block top for a center island at home, my wood shop is a wonderful Frankenstein of "how to make it work". Even if I hear nothing back on guidance, I appreciate you taking the time to respond, and I fixed the mistake of not being subscribed. I just did things the hard way and looked up A Conchord Carpenter on a regular basis.

Similar Makita 18 V cordless planer beat out this tool in planing 2.0MM shavings.At 2.0MM This Milwaukee planer bogged down at two times in a single pass on a different video review. Makitas are the best cordless tools.

@@kunj025 dewalt is the better tool ,oz tool talk gave it to makita because the makita was cheaper. They are both fantastic tools and you wouldn't be disappointed with either but the Dewalt is a nicer tool to use. The only little thing is if you go really quick on a 2mm cut it can clog up depending on the wood.

why do you have to rest the tools for 10 seconds?? when in reality you might have to push and abuse tools ? why does milwaukee claim that it is nothing but heavy duty but you can't abuse the tools ?
