Brilliant, well done on this. I did a cover version of Equality using GarageBand and a usb keyboard many, many years ago whilst on holiday in Miami and yours is the first version I've heard that actually is as originally written and performed by Howard. I do have to commend you on being able to play that lead synth part though, it took me many weeks to get it right having studied Howard performing it on the Old Grey Whistle Test. Well done again. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXiYq6Ofpq2CZqMsi=JNdf23nwekuE-5Xx

I saw Howard Jones earlier this year and he was just using a computer for all his synthesizer tunes. I was excited to see him play some vintage synthesizers, but I guess it's not cost effective to travel with a Jupiter 8. :) I went to S U R V I V E and they had all their vintage gear up on the stage for all us synth geeks to drool on. And they did an amazing performance with their old school Korg gear. :) I'm going to see Perturbator next month. I love his music, but I believe he only uses a computer too. I guess I yearn for the time when I can watch people play the keys. :) I've seen the Pet Shop Boys many times and the last time I saw them I was so happy because they hired 3 more musicians to play percussion, synthesizers and they even had a Roland TR-8 on stage! Times could get better. Take care and keep up the great videos. Sam.

Hi Sam, thanks for your comment :-) Well, I guess that for Howard Jones the cost of gigging with a Jupiter 8 shouldn't really be a problem :-) The reason to gig with a PC and/or a modern keyboard is about reliability, not cost. A Jupiter 8, while being a great machine (and I still lust after it even if I have the Jupiter 6), it's always a synthesizer with more than 30 years on its shoulders, making it too delicate and too prone to failure to be used intensively in a live tour. In such cases reliability is a major requirement, and a modern keyboard surely is more reliable than an old beast from the 80ies. There are some bands which take the risk of gigging with vintage gear, but I bet that they're in constant worry about failures which could happen on stage. With old digital synths things are a bit better, especially the though ones like the DX-7, which is truly built like a tank both mechanically and electronically. The same applies with old electric pianos (Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, etc...) and Hammond organs, which electronically are quite simple machines and simpler electronics means bigger reliability, and their mechanics were really built to last. But vintage analog keyboards (synths, transistorized combo organs, string machines) are too delicate. And, but this is a personal point of view, these machines are now too precious and valuable to be used in a live context, exposed to sudden temperature changes, moisture, bad power supplies, etc... To me vintage synthesizers and keyboards, especially the analog ones, should now live just in recording studios, where the ambient conditions are steady and the power supply is clean from interferences, harmonics, voltage jumps, etc. For touring now we have new analogs such Dave Smith's Prophet 6 and Oberheim OB6, the Korg Minilogue, the soon-to-be-released Behringer DeepMind 12, the new Minimoog Model D, and so on. There's again a lot of choice in these days with analog instruments, so, to me, now really there's no need to tour with a vintage analog synthesizer.
@machiwoomiapoo8 жыл бұрын
That may be true, but I still enjoyed seeing all those analogue synthesizers on the stage of the S U R V I V E concert. That was SWEET! :)
@mima858 жыл бұрын
Of course seeing and hearing old analog beasts on stage it's always fascinating :-) Kudos to all which are brave enough to tour with old synthesizers. Me I wouldn't. If I'd have a band, being in a situation like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJ6kgH-pgquFgNE during a live show for me would be a lot embarassing.

S U R V I V E did an amazing show with analog gear. I think JMJ was just having a bad day with those synthesizers. :) Take care, Sam.

@mima855 жыл бұрын
Thank you :-) The bass you hear in the background track was recorded from the Jupiter 6. The bass parts that I play live yes, are from the SY-77, and is the famous E. Bass preset from the DX-7 converted for the SY's FM engine. It came from a patch library called "Best of DX" which was made years ago for the SY-77/99.
