A gigantic mimic that looks like a stone hallway 15 feet long with a barred iron door at the end. When a PC tries to open it, I say it's stuck, make a STR check, which of course fails. When other PCs come in to help, that's when the entrance closes and they get chewed up.

In real life squids, cuttlefish, and octopi can change color and skin texture, so in D&D a mimic can be amazing at copying a door or chest. It might even know that as long as it stays still in a busy urban setting, people will ignore it, and get used to it. Only when a victim is clearly not going to be missed, will it eat him. This means a mimic can understand languages, perhaps from those it has eaten. Holy crap, what if it learns to cast spells?

The best mimic I've ever played against in the game was what I refer to as "the Room". The DM decided that this mimic had taken the form of an entire room in a dungeon and when we had all entered the room it amorphously closed the passage we entered through and then it was us fighting the walls and stuff while struggling to not be rooted by the floor during combat. New levels of door paranoia, room paranoia

This is absolutely evil. I salute your DM and their paranoia inducing idiom.

I’m actually working on my first Campaign that I will DM! The main idea is that there is a sudden and mysterious explosion in mimic population. Of course that won’t immediately be known. Basically a key regional trade route through a forest suddenly gets cut off. Caravans go missing, maddened survivors babble about “the forest coming alive.” While this is happening, weird occurrences have been happening, much like your statue example. I just imagine the nature of the mimics slowly changing as the campaign progresses. From normal, passive ambush predators, and by the end they would be something akin to “The Thing,” now mimicking people.

This is so awesome to learn. My husband hadn't done much with mimics but I had seen images of them and brought them up and put them in our game once. I had seen another video video that brought up the intelligent ones but didn't say what resource it was from. I also hadn't heard of the metal ones.

Mimics reproduce through mitosis. As they age and feed on things, they continue to grow until they split. In some rare cases, they have been known to bypass the mitosis stage and continue growing. There are stories of some growing to house size or larger. There was one campaign back in the day where a mimic had grown large enough to become a wizard's tower. Everyone thought it was magic teleporting the tower around, but it was just the mimic moving around to find food.

Wield a metal mimic as a weapon; shapeshifting weapon/armour gained. Also, testing everything doesn't _have_ to be meta gaming, if you're playing a paranoid character it would make total sense for them to check for every type of danger they know of or could imagine.

@The Dungeoncast You gave us a way to discern a mimic from a chest Vile of acid Poor abit (not enough to ruin a chest) If it doesn't damage the body of the chest, it's a mimic

I got so excited when this video popped up on my feed. I've been riding the Mimic high since making a mimic dice box for a couple of friends who happen to be DMs. Every time the parties find a chest the dice box comes out into the table just to spread a little fear lol.

I run a variant of mimics that have a hyper-adhesive hide that requires PCs to make a DC25 Strength Check to pull their weapon free after a successful hit. They are also resistant to critical hits and spells. Not overly powered but are a curve ball the party almost never expects. A low level party might struggle with them though.

A mimic that's an unidentified magic scroll. When a PC gets stuck to it they're subject to the effects of that scroll. Like a short distance teleport that separates them from the party

I like to think mimics as big one celled organism with the ability to harden and camouflage its cell membrane. So my version does not actually have a mouth, it’s just that it forms part of its cell wall in a mouth like shape with sharp teeth that it then hardens. I also imagine it using some form of photosynthesis and the ability to go into stasis until awoken by light, sound or force to sustain themselves.

Someone should make an official awoken mimic as a character. It could be a sentient weapon, or book, it could even be a shapeshifting humanoid as a team-mate. Also, if they can shapeshift into anything why would they not have eyes?

They suggest that a player who checks every door and chest with a 10-ft pole is meta gaming but I don't see how being afraid of mimics is meta. If anything its more realistic assuming your character is aware of the existence of mimics. I would not be surprised to hear that it's standard procedure for an adventuring company to check doors and chests for traps/mimics every time before breaching. In the military don't they do the same repetitive breach protocol for pretty much every door or passage they come upon to make sure it's safe. For the record I don't think I would waste this much time doing it on every single door and chest but I am only suggesting that it wouldn't be meta and frankly it's meta of me to not do it just because I don't wanna slow the group down going through dungeons.

How about a non common mimic wich is not sentient and is a hyper agressive mimics making small spawns the size of a 10 pound dog that at first make rat holes on the walls of dungeon to pray on rodents until they are big enought to then switch to a barrel size chest and start preying sentient creature. And by assimilation slowly get sentient? I love mimics of all sizes they have so much potential!!!

I would love to just watch him.
