She smiled and asked us in. She went to get a pencil and wrote "A Claudia R. en toute sympathie, S.de Beauvoir") into the book. My sister couldn't be happier when I gave back the book to her. Note: communal apartments are not the same as general soviet apartments. A lot of people shared huge pre-revolution flats in bigger cities, but closer to the end of the soviet era many people moved into their own apartments as those were build everywhere at a huge scale. So for people living in ex-soviet countries staple soviet housing are "projects", not communal apartments. They were so standard at every dimension that there is a cult soviet comedy about a guy who travels drunk to the wrong city, but still finds the same house and the same apartment at the street with the same name and crashes there as it would be his own house.

Going to work with her, I always noticed that rich peoples houses are pretty much carbon copies of eachother and are super boring. Like if I walk into your house I want to get an idea of who you are, not just that you hired an interior designer and told them to "do whatevers trendy"

My absolute FAVE AD Open House video is Daveed Diggs & Emmy Raver-Lampman's. They have so much character in almost every room of their home and while it isn't as in-your-face and eccentric as some houses featured, it still has personality. Emmy talks about how she partnered with her interior designer to basically make the home an art project for her and I love that. Some of my favourite features are the wallpaper in the downstairs powder room, the kitchen (so glad I'm not the only one who loves a great kitchen), the punch card, and the little decorations throughout the house that mean so much to them such as the ottoman and the framed newspaper in the hallway.

My favorite celebrity home tour episode was MTV cribs with rapper Red Man. He just lived in a regular ass 1-story house with a messed up doorbell. You had to rub the 2 wires together to get it to work. An interesting perspective is the rise in renter friendly apartment upgrades that are directly the opposite of these home tours. Most Americans live in apartments they don’t own and can’t make changes to. It’s why I have a distaste for celebrity and rich home tours. The parallels of seeing someone make expensive renovations and show off their personal taste which often veers into extravagant style that becomes outdated quickly, is such a contrast to the way the 99% live in white be grey apartments they can’t individualize because they’re afraid they won’t get their security deposit back when they move out. Most people in this generation will never own a home, as opposed to the rich who can spend thousands and millions on yearly upgrades without a worry is sad.

I would actually like to see more people do apartment tours and just showcase what they've done with their space. Even if you can't knock out walls or repaint, there's still a ton you can do to make the space your own. Now that we have things like temporary wallpaper that just peels off, or that pretty vinyl stuff that goes in windows, there's more options to decorate that won't damage the apartment. I rent, and I always go all out personalizing my space.

There's actually a lot you can do in a rental and creative minds will always find a way. I'm glad that the rich can pay incredible artists to make at least some visions come to life. Bc I find it more concerning how little many people do with their homes (grey epidemic etc, I think Mina talked about it in a previous video). So many people in my country are building new homes rn (or they did before the pandemic), but did anything new come out of it? No. They build the basic black and white modern home and you can imagine how these look inside. And there's no excuse bc they have the money to at least buy one weird piece of art or something. But they don't. I've watched many great DIY and makeover channels over the years and I've seen so many great things, for every budget and for renters as well. My problem atm is more the money and yes, renting does limit you. But it's not a good argument why you can't do anything to your home.

Regarding searching for celebrity homes: home ownership and sales ARE public record and TECHNICALLY you can find out information that way. HOWEVER: Most wealthy folks have their homes in a trust that isn’t named the same as their name, so it is easier to keep your privacy.

I’m way too private to ever show off my house. My neighborhood has a homes and gardens tour every single year. I’m always amazed at how many people are willing to open up their home for tours! I would never do that. Even if my house was perfect and gorgeous. I just can’t. I guess I’m weird.

That’s understandable, but my mom did a home tour once at Christmastime (we didn’t have a grand home, it was a log cabin lol) in our small town as part of a charity fundraiser and it was so much fun! We always go SO out at Christmas and it was an honor to invite our community in and share it - this was like 25 years ago? And people still talk about my moms Christmas tree 😂

I love Dita Von Teese’s house tour. The kitchen and dining area, plus her outdoor space, were beautiful. But I especially love Kirsten Dunst’s house tour with her designer. I love Kirsten’s interest in vintage/antique stuff and that she loves things that have imperfections. You can tell the designer really understood Kirsten and they collaborated so well, and every piece they talked about had a really meaningful story behind it. I love the AD house tours, and any house/architectural tour),as an escape, but some interiors do inspire my own home decor.

I remember watching Redman's episode of cribs! I thought it was amazing. We had a broken screen door at the time and his same broken screen door made me feel seen! Many years later I actually worked at a real estate company and loved being able to look through listing pictures. I worked weekends a lot, so would talk to new agents who were doing open houses. I have a lot of funny memories, from agents complaining that only nosy neighbours came to vist, to people calling to make appointments to visit an open house, unaware that they didn't need appointments (that's the while point!). I think this kind of content is super addictive at all stages of life. My sister JUST bought a house but still can't stop looking at listings. And I can't blame her.

Kirsten Dunst's house is for sure my favorite AD video I've watched so far, she tours by spotlighting specific items, which I thought was pretty unique, and I love her choices. She has so many pieces inspired by media she's been in (like Marie Antoinette), personal interests and favorites, and she's clearly procured her collection over many years, which feels very real. The house seems livable but still interesting, personal. I appreciate her approach.

I don't know for sure if it even was an AD feature, but once upon a time a tour of Amy Sedaris' NY apartment started auto-playing on my KZbin, and her style was A LOT, but I love color and coziness, and she had made many of her decor items herself, so I was really impressed with her creativity. It was like being in a storybook dialed up to eleventy - or maybe like the set of one of those highly-curated, heightened reality fantasy tv show/movies I like so much. When I suddenly think about that video I often search it and rewatch it. It's comfort food for me at this point lol.

i’m so glad you talked ab american vs soviet housing. for one of my courses, i had to do a group project ab postWW2 housing. my specific country was japan, so i covered danchi. however we had to look at political formation, economy, and social demographics. it was interesting to see their housing was borrowed from the ussr while us occupation affected their economic/political functions. architecture is so important to societies.

David and Lily’s is soooo English lol, the lack of taste is kinda part of the charm. It looks like an elevated version of every middle class home I’ve ever visited (lots of grey&beige paired with the tackiest shit I’ve ever seen, sometimes passed on from previous generations). Rita Ora’s AD tour is definitely one that massively surprised me and a lot of people who’ve seen it - she has what I believe is a Victorian built home in London that was once the residence of Arthur Rackham, a famous illustrator and what she has done with the space is absolutely stunning. She’s kept so much of the original features and character of the house yet it still feels like a home of the present day and not at all dated or old-timey. She also speaks about the home with so much pride and is so well informed on it’s history - it’s just such a great home and such a great tour 💖

I'm so glad you mentioned MTV Cribs! When I first saw an AD home tour video all I could think about was Cribs. Which kinda helped with not getting sucked into watching the AD videos because I've "been there done that" with Cribs when I was in middle school. Which is also how I feel about the Bachelor and Bachelorette since as a kid and teenager I watched a lot of the VH1 dating shows like A Shot of Love, Flavor of Love, and I love New York.

Omg Greta garbo! My brother got married in her Amalfi coast villa in Ravello over the summer (which is now a hotel). Then my family stayed in her Sicilian villa in Letojanni (which is on Airbnb!). Her homes were beautiful, she had impeccable taste. The most stunning properties I’ve ever seen on the Mediterranean! Legend has it that she only visited the Sicilian villa in the winter to avoid fans and tourists. She was super private.

Cara Delevingne’s is one of my favs forever! I like how she has a lot of different areas in her house, but they work together so beautifully, and anyone can find the most comfortable spot for them there. Celebrity homes are actually pretty hard to find because they often buy their homes through a trust or an LLC, and it's usually very generic the name of the LLC or trust. So even if you were to go on your local assessor's database and try and find out who owned the properties, it's not always easy to tell which celebrity owns which property.

I thought Dita von Teese was the coolest, but then my friend showed me Anna Sui’s home. Love both though. Their homes made me want to embrace the repressed feelings in making my current living space into a home. As a kid, I only lived in low income apartments with no space of my own. Just furniture,clothes and toys. My mom was a big advocate of minimalism to nothing in the apts we’d move to. So I grew up wanting to become an interior designer to ultimately realize I just wanted to feel at home somewhere for once. Now that I have my own place, I go ham with my decorating and have alllll the books I want in/on shelves. It makes me feel comfortable,safe, inspired, and good about being at home. Plus I finally get to make it smell like flowers 😭✨
