I listened to Daughter of Doctor Moreau on audio book and it was very immersive, and I loved it. But I get what you're saying about not enough--this book was more slice of life if you live with a mad scientist in an isolated place than it is getting into the weeds about the hybrids or the ethics of their existence/treatment.

Ok, I’ll HAVE to read His Majesty and the Carmen Maria Machado book NOW!!! In January I only read 2 books (Untamed Shore by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas) and really loved them both. The Hacienda was my favorite though, and an EASY 5 stars

I think The Daughter of Doctor Moreau tried to explore more feminist themes by looking at women and their treatment under colonialist rule but used the overarching anti-colonialism themes of the original Island of Doctor Moreau as a jumping off point instead of fully delving into them again, which makes it hard for it to work as a stand alone novel.

I just read Rebel by Beverly Jenkins and absolutely LOVED it! If you haven't gotten into that one yet, I highly recommend! Drake is SO dreamy and Val is such an icon, a bad ass, a legend! I think you would really like that one 😊 A Taste of Gold and Iron sounds amazing, definitely have to get to that ASAP

Yep nothing has come anywhere close to Lola for me. Other RH stories just seem to be too similar (not to Lola but to each other), although the author's fantasy RH trilogy was sometimes disturbing, sometimes hot and sometimes entertaining at different points.
