Minced beef and dumplings is a classic, British comfort food. It's not to be mucked around with, and I am of the belief that less is certainly more.
This dish is really easy to make. Apart from frying some beef mince, onion carrot and celery. The rest is pretty much done in the oven. The dumplings take no time at all, and you'll get brownie points for making your own. There is literally no excuse for buying pre-made dumplings...ever...unless you're in a survival situation in the wilderness. In that case, i'd be asking myself the question...why are you eating dumplings when you should be looking for help??
To make my easy mince and dumplings you will need:
►500g minced beef
►2 bay leaves
►200ml red wine
►400g tin of chopped tomatoes
►350ml beef stock (knorr jelly pots are ace)
►3 garlic cloves finely crushed
►1 1/2 tbsp tomato puree
►2 carrots diced
►1 large onion diced
►2 celery sticks, peeled and diced
►1 tbsp plain flour
►Salt and pepper to taste
For the dumplings:
►250g self raising flour
►150g beef suet
►125g mature cheddar cheese
►2 Tbsp freshly chopped parsley
►Enough cold water to bring together (about 200ml)

@@Adam_Garratt Hi Adam i am enjoying your show and my best ever food in the world is my mams stew and dumplings. It is unbeatable i would walk a thousand miles today just for one of her fluffy dumping sadly she passed away a long time ago . when i married and left home whenever i was making a stew i would drive to her house pick her up and made her make me a dish of them then while they began cooking i had just enough time to drive her back to her house and drive back home and enjoy my (her) dumplings, now with the knowledge that we were very poor i look back and think geez I was lucky to have my mam she never ever complained about about money to my mammy in heaven bless you and may you rest in the arms of Jesus next to my dad,and my recently passed beloved husband of 53 years

As you know this recipe has become a family favourite since ai learnt it here. It’s cold today in Toowoomba, Queensland so I took the opportunity to make this again. My daughter had a great line when she arrived at the table tonight. “This meal is like a hug on a plate. 😀”. Hope that make you and your loved ones, smile too.

New subscriber. Delighted to have discovered your channel. My dear Mum used to make mince with dumplings (not cheese dumplings, but i had no complaints!) and it was my favourite childhood meal. You made such a good point that the best British meals come from thrift. Hot pot, Irish Stew (yes I know, not British!) Savoury mince on toast, (even the Spencer children apparently had mince with veggies for lunch most days) bangers and mash. So look forwarding to checking out your “back catalogue” so to speak!

Some years ago, there was a Mensa convention in Sydney. Mensa, as you know, is an organisation for people who have an IQ of 140 or higher. Several of the Mensa members went out for lunch at a local cafe. When they sat down, one of them discovered that their salt shaker contained pepper and their pepper shaker was full of salt. How could they swap the contents of the two bottles without spilling any and using only the implements at hand? Clearly, this was a job for Mensa minds. The group debated the problem and presented ideas and finally, came up with a brilliant solution involving a napkin, a straw, and an empty saucer. They called the waitress over, ready to dazzle her with their solution. “Ma’am”, they said. “We couldn’t help but notice that the pepper shaker contains salt and the salt shaker …” But before they could finish, the waitress interrupted. “Oh! Sorry about that”. She leaned over the table, unscrewed the caps of both bottles and switched them. There was dead silence at the Mensa table.

Did you see Heston’s recipe for a bacon sarnie? The ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise sauce. Three pieces of bacon dark and three pieces half cooked. And one piece of bread toasted and one not toasted?!?!? Laughable. He said it was all about the texture. Left me shaking my head. I totally agree, leave the jems alone. We cannot improve on what is amazing as is.

Hi Adam, I seem to comment a bit on your channel but that's because I really like watching your vids and trying your recipes. I only got onto your channel because you left a comment on another high profile cooking video; that kind of marketing is excellent because we all scroll down to read comments on KZbin videos. You have a similar easy going, no stress style to that of Kerryann Dunlop, a Jamie Oliver protege, and it would be excellent to see your channel excelling in profile. I truly believe your channel will take off. Thanks for your videos, I've loved cooking quite a few.

I've learned through making many mistakes, and also out of love and desire to eat nice food without having to rely on someone else. Rick stein was a huge influence early on, and one of the few tv chefs I could watch endlessly. Mainly because he's a great cook and orator, but also he's not shouting at a chicken breast in a sweaty restaurant kitchen 🤣

14 years ago I lived 200 yards from the Fat Duck [Hestons Bloominhell's place] Back then he charged £85 for a set meal which included such "delights" as egg and bacon ice cream and snail porridge. Not my idea of good food. If Heston had serves minced beef with cheddar dumplings I might have gone but to justify £85 he would have added truffles and Napolean Brandy and completely F**KED it up. Keep up the good work Adam.

It looked like a oxo stock cube put in water, which i did. I just followed your recipe to the T i did not want to change it. Why would you want to? If i did i would be looking for a recipe that had all the extras you wanted to put in to start with. OMG the left overs tasted even better. Although i ran out of dumpling but had it on toast. Fabulous. Well done. I subscribed. Looking forward to your next thrifty recipes. 🎉

I always add Worcestershire and a good splodge of ketchup. It gives it another layer of flavor with a ketchup ketchup has spices in it what can very much help with another layer of flavor as long as you're not adding a cup full! ;-)

Hi. Looks a gorgeous recipe. However, I don't like wine in food - is it ok to do this dish without?? Thanks.

How could you adjust this method for slow cooker please and more of a savoury mince ?

Hi Jane. You could slow cook this, maybe for 4-5 hours on low. Add dumplings for the last 45 mins ish. I also have a savoury mince recipe on the channel with crispy new potatoes 😊

Just a thought most folks these days (in NA at least) don't cook with gas. If you could include actual oven temps rather than just gas marks it might be more useful. Thanks for the recipe.

You're so right about YT chefs and cooks Adam. My pet peave is when they say "marinate in the frig overnight ", my family is hungry now you idiot! I need a healthy, flavourful meal on the table in less than 2 hours. Get real guys. This dish you've made, beef stew with dumplings, would go down a real treat, thanks. May I suggest a cup of stout instead of the wine.
