Beef rendang, having lived in many countries around the world and eaten many cuisines, beef rendang is right at the top of all time favourite dishes. The making of it takes hours and hours and the complexity and subtlety of the flavours and spices, combined with melt in the mouth beef, is one of the greatest food wonders that everyone should enjoy at least once and experience it for themselves.

Foreign tourist are often not adventurous enough to eat food that looks alien to them. Especially food that's rich in culture like nasi padang, they can't accept how it's commonly served (waiter serves you everything, you pay for things that you touch, untouched dishes go back to the kitchen to be served later, cmiiw). I can understand how people think it's disgusting...

There were a few Indonesian restaurants near where I live in the US. The place was always empty whereas the next door Thai restaurant filled with a long line of customers. Upon observations after dining at the Indonesian restaurant, I learned that although the food at the Indonesian restaurant was really good, if not better than the next door Thai restaurant, the service was very slow and inefficient, and there was a lack of ambiance. During busy lunch hour, meals must be served quickly. Simply having yummy food is not enough recipe for success. Great customer service, speed, and proper food handling and cleanliness are a must in order to be successful. The places sadly ran out of business. Currently there is no Indonesian restaurant in my town. I miss the food though.

If you do like Padang style food in Jakarta, then you really gotta try it in its birthplace, Padang City, Indonesia, then move to the south to Medan city... Your mind is guaranteed to be blown... for seafood, go to Lampung City. Go to "Jumbo seafood". Similar style with Layar seafood jakarta, but much much cheaper with same quality. I'm from Bandung city and i love Padang food, and when i actually got the chance to visit almost the half of Sumatra (Padang, Medan, Riau, Jambi, Lampung), i actually blown away by the food. It's entirely on different level with the ones you find in Jakarta and basically Java island...

@@duckrie1340 i prefer dawet than cendol(its same really,i think cendol has thicker rice flour)but yeah cendol is great too, especially if you're into sweet drinks

the mochi ball drink is called wedang ronde, and it is good to drink on a rainy day ... and I think you have missed the big mochi ball ... if you bite big mochi ball , palm sugar syrup inside the mochi ball will poped out, and it makes the drink taste better

If you come back to Jakarta make sure you try Soto Tangkar, a beef soup with lots of coconut milk and spices... the famous one is located in Tanah Tinggi, Senen, Jakarta Pusat. After that, maybe you should try Warung Tegal (maybe Warteg Warmo? Kinda forget the name). For Chinese Indonesian or Peranakan Foods you should try Angke... have a long live and journey, Mike!!!
