In the video, Old English is compared to High German. It would have to be compared to Low German, preferably from north-western Germany. There are even fewer differences between the languages.

Because English was influenced by alot of Latin. English is in Origin a Germanic language thats why the Old English is so similar to German and the Scandinavian languages or Germanic languages😄

@@elias8auer979 well that’s not important. The Latin influence didn’t come from the Roman Empire so classic Latin but from the French who ruled over Britain at some point. (If you’re interested, google about Norman conquest 11th century, William l) English IS a Germanic language. That’s why old English is so close to standard German. But heavily influenced by French later on. So op is correct and you’re wrong.

As far as i know, english and german have the same roots because the anglo-soxons who settled over to the british isles were germanic tribes. There the language evolves to the modern english and in germany to the actual german language.

The English are descendants of the Anglo-Saxons who conquered England in the 5th century. The Anglo-Saxons (+ Frisians) are/were North German tribes. The Anglo-Saxon language is the base language of English.

These similarities become even more clearer when you compare old English to Middle High German (the medieval times' German): OE: mîn (my) MHG: mîn (mein), OE: îuer (your) MHG: iuwer (euer), OE: sîn (his) MHG sîn (sein), and many more. Fun fact: the English word for "hole in the wall to let air and light in" is more Germanic than the German word: German assimilated the Latin word "fenestra" into "Fenster", while English still uses the Germanic word "Windauge" (literally: "wind eye", meaning window).

You should hear "Plattdeutsch", to me the "Plattdeutsch" spoken in north Germany sounds allot like English. It's a dialect.

There is the old story that when hundred or two hundred years ago fishermen from the North of Germany had to seek protection in a British harbor because of bad weather or the other way round, they had hardly any problems to communicate, get accommodation for some days and even do business. On a basic level, the two languages spoken in coastal regions were really similar.

@@juliabremen624 Das ist keine ganz einfache Frage. Es gibt natürlich Sprachen, für die kein gemeinsamer Vorfahre nachweisbar ist. Da kann man klar sagen, dass es sich um zwei unterschiedliche Sprachen handelt, und nicht um Dialekte von einander. Z. B. ist Deutsch ganz klar kein japanischer Dialekt. Ansonsten gibt es aber keine klaren, den Sprachen innewohnende Kriterien, Sprache von Dialekt zu unterscheiden. Man könnte natürlich versuchen, nach Ähnlichkeiten zu suchen und einen bestimmten Punkt zu finden, ab dem man dann von Sprache spricht und nicht mehr von Dialekt. Das entspricht aber nicht der Praxis. So ist z. B die niederländische Sprache in einigen Punkten der deutschen Sprache näher als es die plattdeutsche Sprache ist (z. B. im Vokalismus), niemand würde aber behaupten niederländisch wäre ein deutscher Dialekt. In der Praxis ist also Sprache das, was offiziell als Sprache anerkannt ist. Plattdeutsch ja, bayrisch nein. Ein weiteres Kriterium sind die anzestralen Sprachen. Wenn schon die Vorgänger zweier Sprachen als eigene Sprachen betrachtet werden, dann gilt das in der Regel auch auf die Sprachen selber. Der Vorgänger des Plattdeutschen, die altsächsische Sprache wird als eigene Sprache getrennt vom althochdeutschen behandelt und steht dem altenglischen näher. Speziell in Deutschland haben wir noch den Fall, dass die deutsche Standardsprache, oft nicht ganz korrekt "hochdeutsch" genannt, aus der Schriftsprache hervorgegangen ist, für die sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte ein gewisser Standard entwickelt hatte. Dieser Standard war hauptsächlich auf der Basis der hochdeutschen Dialekte entwickelt worden. Das deutsch, das wir in der Schule lernen, in den Medien hören und hier schreiben entspricht also nicht einem bestimmten Dialekt, sondern einer Mischung verschiedener hochdeutscher Dialekte mit verschieden großen Anteilen.

Old English is about 1500 years old, and Shakespearian English is about 450 years. Old English basically is the Old Saxon that was spoken in the area between the Netherlands and Czechia at that time (With the Viking invaders came north Germanic into the mix e.g. personal pronouns as he and they and some grammatical features like word order in the sentence. Then there are some Greek, Latin, and Celtic loan words). When Martin Luther translated the bible (and as a by-product created the standard German variety "Hochdeutsch") he based it mainly on this specific German dialect. The speaker clearly was not a native German speaker as he butchered some of the German words really hard. Old English wasn't Old Saxon, Old Saxon was a different language, Old English was called Englisc be the Anglo Saxons because it was the language of the Anglos, the Saxons that came with the Anglos also spoke this rather than Old Saxon.

@@Uthwita With "Old English" is meant what we know about the different West-Germanic languages and dialects that were spoken on the British Isles by Saxons, Angels, and Jutes. The problem is that most of the texts are from the Wessex part of England, which are, as the name indicates, Saxon. Old English was more than Old Saxon but unfortunately, the majority of texts that can be examined today are Old Saxon.

A history teacher told me this stor. When the Vikings made war against Britain, the Britains were not strong enough to hide their country. So thes asked the "Saxen" (not Saxonia but a part in eastern Schleswig- Holstein) and the "Angeln" - even from northern Germany- if they can help them. They did. They wan. They oocupied, because the english Lords can´t pay the bill.The northern Germans demanded to much, because the english Lords said: If you hide us, you can wih what ou want. Since that time the original old british languages falled into oblivion. If this is right, what my history teacher tought us, "Plattdeutsch" is - thougt consenquently- the "world speach".

You have the order wrong. The "Danish" invasion happened after the Angles, Saxons and Jutes etc. had already migrated to Britain, become Christian and founded kingdoms. The reason the Angles etc. moved there was the power vacuum after the Romans abandoned Britain.

Yeah, the Anglo-Saxons were Germanic tribes that came from Northern Germany/ Denmark. So the language should have been the same back then. Of course modern German changed a bit and modern English has also influences from Celtic Britons, Roman Latin and Norman French a lot. So modern English is basically a mixed language.

The similarities would be even bigger if the would have not used modern high German. In the time when northumbrian was spoken, they spok in "Germany" or would we say the earliest stag of the holy Roman empire different kind of germanic languages. But in the north (modern days Netherlands, lower Saxony, Luxembourg, Belgium, South Denmark and Brandenburg) they would have spoken three languages (Frisian, Low German and Danish/a Form of Danish although could Dansk), that mostly very a like or literally identical to northumbrian. Actually as a kid my grandparents still spok some low (Platt as we call it) and it sound identical to the northumbrian in this video

On you questions in the end. Well, we had it in englisch at school. As a small history lesson. It more or less that the englisch island was ever often conquered. How the original language of the Celtic Piktish sounds is difficult to say, may had more similarities with Gallic, Irsh or Welsh? But at first they got conquered by the Romans, how brought Latin in, then by the Angles, Saxony and Jutes how brought germanic (Low germanic) in (and the name England, what meant once Angle Land), THEN the Scandinavians (Norse/Vikings) how brought Norse germanic/Scandinavian and the with William the Conquer at the early middle ages finally French and more Latin. So you got it from us (Nothgermans), but we see you like a distant but nice cousin, that calls regularly and comes for tea time. (Yeah, we have that to but only in the north with black tea, brown big sugar Chrystals, cream and cake)

well the people that "made" english are the people that speak german/danish/dutch/norwegian/swedish. upper class english got strongly influenced by the "fancy" latin languages being reflected with casual words being more germanic and upper class words latin. pronunciation also got strongly altered in the letter reform so if you go further than 1500 back english sounds more german than english and english also kicked out germanic letters like eth or thorn for th and the a from 'and' is pronounced ä.

I just read about the old avestan deity called mithra, as a proto indo European daughter language, I wonder if Tolkien noticed this. Mithra = mithril, the metal from which the One Ring is fashioned, mi is a PIE root noun and means to bind and tra/thril means cause to.. So mithril literally means the cause to bind, remember the phrase from lord of the rings? To bind them all.. Tolkien studied old English and new about relationships between it, Celtic and proto germanic at least😂
