Mindcrack Ep 25 - "Chicken XP Farm!!!" Minecraft Survival Multiplayer

In this episode...we hang our schemin' and prankin' hat on its hook and dive back into some building and redstoning! Today I work on a Chicken XP farm...free XP while you putz around your base! Just be careful you don't forget about it and crash the server!!! ;-)
This is the server Guude started in late 2010. It is a private (whitelisted) server. We are currently not accepting applications.

the redstone torches are powering the blocks the bottom hoppers are against which power the hoppers, this stops the items passing through until another item comes into the sorting hopper which then makes the signal strong enough to turn the torch off just long enough to allow one item to pass through. Hope this helped, it is hard to explain in text, there should be plenty of tutorials, Genny went into more detail in one of his later episodes on the hermitcraft series

First off, great vid Genny! If you need to mass cook chicken you can always use the nether cooking station you build. The villager idea is great too though. Just don't go insane with all the noise the chicken will make!

Funny, this reminds me a lot of a chicken farm I did in March - to turn it into an XP farm, all I would have had to do is switch the lava blade off, kudos for that idea, Genny!

GennyB, for the spider farm you could set it up so the spiders fall to theirdoom onto half slabs and have a hoper minecart pick them up and drop them onto a dropper tower that will transport them to the same level as the chicken farm.

Hey Genny! You probably wont see this but when you kill the chicken with the splash potion, if you hold a looting sword in your hand the looting will apply to the chicken when dying

Hey, Genny, make sure you are holding a looting three sword when you kill the chickens with the harming potion. Saves the durability on your sword and will give you tons of drops.

For the haunted hallways, make them dark with half slab floors and add a couple of flickering lights (with redstone of course).

GB, your suspicions about your chicken breeder being a major concern for lag are quite reasonable. I once built such a machine (near spawn, and therefore in a loaded chunk) and proceeded to go to the nether. I returned to the Overworld a couple hours later to find that I now owned 3000 chickens. I didn't experience any server lag (things worked fine while I was in the nether) but the framerate was terrible.

Genny if you want a looting 3 effect when you kill the chickens throw a splash potion of harming and then quickly change into a looting 3 sword, Etho showed this off in one of his LP episodes, it may cause alot of lag due to all of the entities. I also think that you should make a master kill switch in case for chicken devastation so that anyone that is on during lag and notices your chickens could use maybe lava to destroy them.

Hi Genny, the idea of the chicken xp farm is great. But combined with a spider spawner AND villagers you may crash the server. There are too many other players on the server who all have their own farms running. Vechz just built a double skelly xp farm. Doc has many villagers plus a running chicken farm. There is a chicken farm and a lot of cows inside the spawn chunks. Adlington has a gold farm. What will happen if someone decides to build an iron golem farm? It's too much for the server.

Genny, you could detect the rough number of chickens in the system by measuring the egg production rate with a comparator on the dispenser before you shoot them back into the system. If the rate is too high, stop shooting the eggs. That way it won't lag out the server. To measure the rate, you could buffer the eggs in a chest. Then, with a clock, empty the chest every 5 seconds. If there are more than a certain number of eggs collected in that 5 second window, your shut down the system.

One idea to make this less stressful on the server might be to put pistons on a long timer above lava which when triggered will move the floor from under the chickens and drop them into lava, killing all the chickens every now and then, for incase you forget to keep track of it. No idea if that would work, but it would be cool if it did.

I made one of those chicken hatcheries in my cave base, but I built a wall in front of it and forgot to check up on it. Now I'm still finding hordes of chickens when I go ore-hunting.

Hey Generik: I did a set up very near to this. I found that you need to drop the chickens one block below your dropper or dispenser. Other wise the eggs shoots out and hurts your chickens in storage. I also found that a 2 by 1 holding area had much less glitching when the chickens began to stack. Just a couple of thoughts hope they help nice build.

Since the first snow layer actually doesn't raise your Y coordinate, 4 snow layers is only 3 layers times .125 blocks increase each. 4 snow layers is 3/8 of a block and therefore less than a half slab.

Genny if you want to add a super easy kill switch to your chicken farm place a switch on block above the glass on the front, which should put the top dispenser in an always on state when pulled, disabling the effect of the clock running at the back, so no more chicken eggs will get launched out, then you just have to kill all the chickens in the XP farm and no more will spawn. I hope you read this so you don't have to constantly check your chicken farm :-D

if you dont know genny, if you have a looting 3 sword, you can throw a splash potion of harming then swap to the looting 3 sword and get the looting effect without wasting its uses, so you could get extra chicken/feathers... etho talks about it in his single player LP

you should hook the chicken chest up to a semi-automatic furnace and pick up the food for MOAR EXP! You could even use the witch sticks (if you ever set it up) for fuel.

Generik, if u throw a harming potion at the chickens and then quickly hold a looting sword u get the same amount of xp as if the looting sword killed them and the sword doesn't lose durability. I found that out off etho btw.

Long story, but here a summary: after you unlock all trades on a villager the last trade will reset. This way you can get lots of emeralds without searching for new villagers. But it's a long journey, and you will need quite a lot emeralds and time.

I made something similar; you are going to have to watch the population. I have thought of keeping 2 chicken chambers that alternate killing all the chickens, like every 12 hours or so. But have moved on to other projects, some food for thought though. Also loved the pranks, yeah maybe time for a break but your funny as hell and don't feel the need for cussing - very much appreciated!

Hey man, to get the spider eyes you will need to kill them manually. Otherwise they only drop string. So you might as well just turn the spider spawner into an XP farm just to add on your XP methods down there :)

Generik! if you are killing a bunch of the chickens at a time, the comparators could go up to a 3 length signal... so it could empty everything from the other hopper, which wouldn't be good.

In other words: If you Spalsh the chickens and switch to an looting 3 sword you will receive the effects of the sword without using its durability! And NO! I'm not lying! DEAR GOD! The problem with doc's villager breeder was caused by a very old minecraft memory leak that can cause chunks to stay loaded, the same as a spawn chunk. This can happen to your chicken farm as well, so you won't even need to be there. Trust me, I do the back end work for a very nice server. There have been patches for this, but really just hax. It can be ameliorated by occasionally restarting the server. Start with 1 chicken, double it each day. How many in a month? Exponents scare me.

Genny, if you switch the comparator to subtract mode the clocks will be more reliable, especially if you get a sudden rush of eggs coming into the droppers.

Genny, for a brown mushroom farm a room big enough to grow giant mushrooms in might be the best bang for your buck, but it also needs bonemeal to get them going. Could you combo that with a 1-high dark room and maybe some kind of water-harvesting system to grow them normally?

Hello, GenerikB, you're not taking into consideration that even in update 1.6.2, chickens are still glitching out of their dens like crazy. They will glitch down when over slabs or hoppers. Since you have very few in your feeding den, the chance will be smaller, but giving it enough time, they still will glitch out. If you have many, you are at the risk of swarming your underground with them.

I've crashed a server with a similar infinite-chicken coop. Mine wasn't as nice and compact, but the same principle. A shutoff switch is a must!

Maybe you could elevator some of the raw chicken and feathers to a gnarly haunted tree near the entrance. When people enter the grounds it could shoot the feathers and chickens at the interlopers.

It is probably the 1.6.2 issue with entities and not unloading chunks that are causing a bit of your lag, as it is a issue more or less every server gets. There's Bukkit plugins which unload unused chunks in a regular fashion to help out.

@kevroa he could make a witch farm but when 1.7 snapshots are just around the corner and the mindcrack server will be on the snapshot. In 1.7 all witch farms and farms that require a generated structure based on the biome will be broken so a witch farm would only work for a little bit with hat witch hut

there are villagers that will trade emerald for wool. if you set up a spider farm, you can then get wool, craft it into wool, and then trade :)

You should make the mansion part as if it is sinking into the ground and like falling over, like there is a huge open area that was destroyed or something, it would just be cool if it was falling into the water like it flooded and it's sinking into the clay and sand and stuff

Wen you mentioned the swamp mansion style, the first thing I think of are the houses in French Quarter of New Orleans. Got a voodoo vibe to it and fits the swamp theme well. Maybe consider imitating that style?
