From a previous comment: "Tbh, I think FOMO is a real thing, among other things that make us just consume content all day. I can't play video games now unless I take the time to enjoy them and take something from them. But the problem is playing them to appease FOMO or "stay in vogue" with everyone else is just too much pressure. So I sometimes never play them."

I completely agree… "Intelligenti pauca". I recently read Byung Chul Han, and he said that we should not confuse information with meaning. You can have an immense amount of information (even good information), but it does not necessarily constitute meaning. On the contrary, you can have little information and still construct something that holds meaning. Along the same lines, it is worth remembering some classics (like Seneca and Epictetus), who suggested reading few books (but good ones).

Thanks Odysseas for sharing your methods, I’m slowly acclimating to using Obsidian now because of some of your videos. 😊

This video reminds me of a passage from The Count of Monte Cristo, spoken by the Abbe Faria to Edmond Dantes when the two were together in prison: "I had nearly five thousand volumes in my library at Rome; but after reading them over many times, I found out that with one hundred and fifty well-chosen books a man possesses, if not a complete summary of all human knowledge, at least all that a man need really know. I devoted three years of my life to reading and studying these one hundred and fifty volumes, till I knew them nearly by heart; so that since I have been in prison, a very slight effort of memory has enabled me to recall their contents as readily as though the pages were open before me." I have thought about it many times over the years and have wondered if perhaps it is better to spend one's life reading more narrowly but deeply, rather than trying to read as much as possible but reading shallowly.

I have an allergy that makes me unable to read paper books. I got through 4+ years of nursing school with the help of youtube, online-handbooks, e-books, audiobooks and, naturally, classes. I do use pen and paper but without Obsidian (I tried Roam first, but it didn't entirely suit me) I would be smoked in my professional life. With some easy maneuvers I can collect everything I ever learned about a subject and do a talk or write a short summary to the benefit of my colleagues. I was very influenced by Kadavy's Mind Management, which taught me the importance of timing. Cal Newport's books are great too. At 58, I am happy to be an eternal student. 😁

Through my readings one of the ideas that really hit home was that of "Deep Work" by Cal Newport. You have covered it in your own way in another video. And for me it's the ideal way to mindfully consume the educational and practical content. For eg, when I get notified of your upload, I don't necessarily watch it right away (which is a compliment 😉), I will watch it only when I'm in that window in my schedule where I'm "working deep" - no distractions, full attention, maximum absorption.

So far since I've watched this, the last 2 days I've been more aware of how I interact with the plethora of content available. I've taken up the advice of notetaking, and wow this is great so far. Luckily, I know how to use Notion so I can organize my notes well. I think that it is selfish to hoard all the information you learn from videos and books in your brain, and not share it. Using this Notion moving forward as my archive for not just KZbin videos, but books, and even movies that I believe left an impact on me. I hope to share my thoughts and notes, condensed in an order of importance, with someone, someday. This allows for the transfer of information from one generation to the next. Thank you.

This second time, I grew more fond of your rather quickly content. But it is only now in this moment that I am realising that actually your content deeply resonates with me. I have tried in the last few weeks to decrease my consumption of media, decrease my exposure to hyperstimulating thumbnails/content/WhateverYouMayWantToPlugInTogetherWithThat and focus on more interesting things - though I never knew before that all the media I was consuming actually wasn't that interesting to me! It was mostly background noise, the feeling of *something* happening. Only now can I actually appreciate your content because I freed some space in my mind to reflect on it. So to summarize: Thank you and keep doing what you're doing.

These are some excellent points and a much-needed kick in the pants for me to get off my “edutainment” hamster wheel 🙈 what you said about consuming better quality content necessarily limiting the quantity of content we consume reminds me of an idea I read several years ago in Essentialism by Greg McKeown, “less but better”, making the distinction that the focus is not on less for less’s sake but like you said, so we can devote our full focus and attention on what is much more valuable. In a way it’s practicing contentment and gratitude, choosing to believe we have enough instead of always rushing in FOMO. I’ve noticed too with the amount of content there is available to consume that it is like panning for gold - often I’ll pull up multiple tabs that look like they’ll be interesting/useful only to realize partway through that they’re not delivering on the promise of the title/thumbnail/article excerpt/etc and therefore not actually worth my time. I’m trying to get better about recognizing and cutting my losses more quickly instead of hoarding open tabs like a squirrel preparing for winter 😂

Thanks, Odysseas, for the inspiring content! However, I’m wondering, do you really take notes on everything you read? What about information about the world (newspapers, news portals) - do you take notes on that too? And what do you do when you start reading something, or worse, when you finish and realize there’s nothing to take notes on because the article (for example on Medium or Substack or anywhere else) was just weak and not worth remembering? Do you transfer your handwritten notes to Obsidian (I recently adopted this workflow, and it’s working pretty well for me)?
@odysseas__Ай бұрын
Cheers, and that's an important question. I take notes for anything that I feel can serve my thinking or writing in the future, so that's not necessarily ALL informational content. Stuff like news might have some good ideas in, but the purpose of a lot of it is just to keep you up to date so I'm happy to just take a mental note of it and move on. It's that sort of compromise. If nothing in the writing is that special, I'm happy to just move on and not write notes. That's pretty common too. And yes I do move everything over asap -otherwise I risk it not happening at all. Hope thats helpful!
@msd5808Ай бұрын
Spend time alone with your notes, perhaps reading them randomly (shuffling), to see if you can get meta/gestalt idea-making from it, useful for a creative project. Reflect on them?

Haha busted -couldn't resist mentioning it. I've thought about that paid public notes feature, but tbh it doesn't seem worth it. I think I'd rather use them to create high quality write ups and release those instead. And you're right about the titmouse, I forgot about him.

Thanks for your video. I have a question: when you read a big philosophy book, you make a big note summarizing it, but after that? Do you divide it into smaller notes that boil down to a single idea?
@odysseas__Ай бұрын
Cheers, and yes I tend to do both. One summary just to have a big picture of the book, and the rest of the notes will pinpoint interesting ideas.

I watched Netflix junk Emily in Paris on Netflix I could feel my mind turning to mush. And the ideological brainwashing of constructing a view of Paris that bears no resemblance to reality

Great perspective. I wonder what would happen if I only pursued content to support my content creation. Hmmm... a lot less wasted time and probably a lot more content production. Thought-provoking. On another note, I wanted to love Obsidian, but man, it was a struggle to get into a rhythm. I think notecards and the Ryan Holiday approach are going to be my system.
@odysseas__Ай бұрын
Thanks, and I'd suppose it would help, but still it's nice to keep things fresh and sustainable. Obsidian is definitely tricky, so I don't blame you there at all. There are plenty of other systems that are just as great depending on how your mind works.

Sometimes, yep. We can be smart about it though and at least have good runs.

great subject! Okay so this is very useful advice for the first few years. But after a period of like 5 years of doing this sort of thing it can be quite isolating if no one else is doing it. All of a sudden all the memes a person collected become stale, all the channels they watch old videos of are outdated, the world moved on. This strategy seems to be one of the best... but what happens afterwards? We succeed in cutting down on the consumption. We took notes. But now what? Time to commit to only publishing? Only talk to other notetakers? Are there any risks we should look out for? Like maybe people overconsume to reduce the effect of ads? Or manage irl negative overload? Does this mean we should have one account for fun and another for education? btw just to be clear: I think everyone should try something like this (if they get the chance) but I hope there's a follow up on this haha one tip I would say for anyone willing to attempt this is - to make sure to categorize their notes based on whichever projects they will use them for in the future - so that way the notes are made at least a bit more valuable and focused because they were made for something rather than just - oh I should save that it often feels like the only way to stop watching videos is to commit to making videos (which then obviously means another person gets on the treadmill) great video!

Thanks, and this is a great point. I think there also needs to be some top-down thinking based on any larger projects you have, such that your reading is directed towards it. Even if you have no idea what your end goal is, taking notes can also help reveal it. Topics that don't get your love will eventually dwindle and become irrelevant, but the more interesting ones inevitably grow into something bigger. Maybe that discovery was only possible once you slowed down and wrote about them. It's a two way thing, and definitely one to consider.
@thepostgradyearАй бұрын
@@odysseas__ Any tips on what to do when someone finishes a project? Or at least realizes it isn't gonna work out? Where do your projects go to die? While some projects flower, and the others rot, is it more of a sort of stasis in which you'll simply get to them later? How do you know when taking old projects apart and reconstructing them is worth the time? I find that my sidelined projects end up becoming irrelevant. The one thing that ends up being the easiest is simply taking more notes. Making new stuff feels more like design by landfill than anything else. Constantly making new projects based on the most essential old ones before the pile gets to heavy and catches up to me. Talking about the projects that work out is probably much more friendly and what people are looking for - but I figured I would continue the vibe of the comment I left before an anxiety induced nap LOL
@odysseas__Ай бұрын
@@thepostgradyear I don't like abandoning projects unless I genuinely think there is no potential for them, or if I have changed enough to make it irrelevant. I know it's tough to see something to the end, but if your goal is to make something *final,* then a system is needed for making sure that can happen. Juggling a few helps for me. I switch between them to keep things fresh.
@thepostgradyearАй бұрын
@@odysseas__ How do you juggle your projects? Is there a schedule, based on vibes, whatever happens to be easiest that day, the most important things come first, forcing a break after 2 weeks or 2 months, or maybe something else like whatever happens to be in the news?
@odysseas__Ай бұрын
@@thepostgradyear I always do the priority stuff first (like videos) and then use the rest of the time for one or two longer projects, once I finish the important one.
