Here is yet another video on the subject of 'MINDFUL RELAXATION'.
Try this exercise out: Hold your Tan Sau and see if you can relax the muscles and release the tendons around the Elbow joint so that the joint is visibly and noticeably opened up. Then, See if you can keep this quality when someone is pulling down on your forearm. If you can, the final test is if you can freely move the Elbow Joint through the downward pressure of the incoming force.
This type of muscular and skeletal control can only be attained through what Master Chu Shong Tin called 'Nim Tao' (intention) which is cultivated through the correct self practice of the forms of this method of Kung Fu.
You can learn this system through step by step and detailed instructional videos on our Online School here: www.mindfulwingchun.online

This type of power generation is much different to other internal styles I have studied. I had been doing CMA for 15yrs+ before meeting with generous and skilled internal WC practitioners and it still blew my mind. I had several ways(diff internal engines) of generating 0 distance power but none were truly 0 point power as they required internal movement, ground path connection or specific technique to release. With WC the power doesn't need internal "wind up" or even root as Nima demonstrates here. I can't wait to get back to improving and testing through contact but for now I am happy with my SLT and generous masters like Nima sharing some of their understanding.

Your knowledge and generosity with your teaching is exactly what CST would have wished for the passing on of his teachings. Sigung also continued to improve his understanding. 4.46 Nim Tao is not activated because you bring in your tail bone. When we bring in the tail bone and straighten the spine, the energy can flow. And when someone jumps back it is because the teacher has already reached the 2nd level of using Qi as Hand.
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Nim Tao is activate through 'Seng' which means to rise up (energy) from the tailbone to the top of the spine. It is easier achieved when the spine is aligned and upright, however at higher levels it can be done with out any special alignment of the tailbone or spine and at that level it is merely a flow through the spine regardless of posture :)

@@MindfulWingChun Mahalo for your reply! I'm in Seattle and part of Sigung Taky Kimura's and Jesse Glover's lineage. However, I've gone back to (re)learn the base foundation of Wing Chun which is different from JKD as you probably know. I found that going back to the base foundation improved my JKD immensely. And as you discuss, it comes down to mindful relaxation. It's even helping me with being grounded and immovable (long ways to go on that) vs traditional hard martial arts working on being taught and stiff to become immovable..... internal vs external.

Hi Nima, thanks for sharing these great videos. I had a question about the biceps in tan sau. Is your bicep muscle completely relaxed and flaccid? It is very hard for me. If I make a tan, then relax my hand and let it flop down (sort of like the fook sau in look sau), then the bicep releases. But once I turn my hand back into a tan shape, the bicep gets triggered again. Seems like I have more nim lik work to do!
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric, yeah the biceps and the tendons at the elbow joint go soft when I do it. and it's not about changing the shape of the hand. if you change the shape (like a fook sau) then obviously the biceps are not needed as much to hold up the hand and different muscles are used. I'm sure I'm still using some tension in the area but it minimal enough so that it feels completely flaccid. This is just one of many demos that shows that we are able to control the joint directly even while it's under incoming pressure. It's an attribute of Nim Tao. 👍🏼

If I could see right, when you had the student touch your bicep, when you relaxed the bicep it looked like your bicep slightly deflated? Am I seeing that right? When you do that is there any slight tension or contraction left in your bicep at all? Or does just remove a lot of the contraction compared to when it is tensed normally?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 4 жыл бұрын
Yes that's right. The bicep and the Elbow joint tendons open up ("deflate"), to the point that not much tone or contraction can be physically felt in those areas when touching it. But of course eventhough you can't externally feel any tension, there still is activity in the muscles, but its minimal and not in the same localized way that the biceps are usually used. So its not something that can be done normally without the control of Nim Tao. I actually had this tested in a sports lab in a university in Queensland Australia where they connected lots of tension detectors to my boceps and there was a screen that would should the muscle tension levels. When I put on the state while holding a 2kg dumbell the level of tension dropped by 7 times.

@@MindfulWingChun Cool stuff. I got introduced to some of these concepts several years ago when I stumbled upon Maxalding's old book on muscle control. I was so fascinated I stayed up late one night until I could do all this muscle control exercises (except a few of the weirder stomach vacuums). His life story was interesting. He concluded that learning to relax the muscles gave you more strength potential. Always fascinated me.

Sifu, when throwing punches - I know the bottom 3 knuckles are thrown, but when should the first 2 knuckles be used, when it comes to hooks? Also, when should the fist be horizontal? I heard some people prefer hitting with diagonal tilted fists.
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 4 жыл бұрын
We should connect with bottom 3 knuckles when in a vertical fist but should connect with the top 2 knuckles when in a horizontal fist. This is simply due to the natural alignment of the wrist and knuckle bones with the forearm bones (and elbow joint) when in different position. I recommend to practice hitting the heavy bag with all different angles punches so you can figure out the natural alignment. Hook, uppercuts and straight punches (both vertical and horizontal fists). Many are under the incorrect impression that Wing Chun only used Vertical fist punches. this isn't true. Wing Chun has hooks, uppercuts in ChumKiu and Biu Jee and when the Bong Sau rotation is extended into a strike (which is how it would be used in applocation), then it becomes a straight horizontal fisted punch on the centerline. Wing Chun had every type of punch but the only difference is the power generation methodically compared to other arts.
@darkhorse888
@darkhorse888 4 жыл бұрын
@@MindfulWingChun First up you are getting even better at explaining this. congrats. I think it's important to tell students that at a basic level there is different punches etc but ultimately it doesn't really matter what you hit with and at what angle. as long as force is delivered with the right thought the right way. i.e you can deliver in theory the whole body mass through a finger in anger. I wouldn't recommend it but its possible. Perhaps showing how you can break someones structure and deliver a hit with your shoulder or even foot would be pretty cool. We don't see a lot of examples of disrupting someones balance/structure with different unorthodox movements. I know you can easily do this as I was doing it myself at one point. ....Could you please do a short video on the application of the wrist movements in the forms. we repeat them so often i am guessing they are pretty important. particularly worked a lot in the bil jee form.
