Thanks a lot for sharing this extended version, but why did you leave out the bit where he says: "Now, please open your eyes"? Don't you think that's an important aspect of the meditation?

Is this objectless shinay meditation?
@st3v3nc455
@st3v3nc455 2 жыл бұрын
Hey. My understanding is that shinay with an object is when you are actively directing your awareness towards a specific object and bringing it back to that object when it drifts away. Objectless shinay is when you stop directing the mind to a specific object and just allow the mind to do what it does whilst remaining aware of what it is doing. As such, with objectless shinay you allow the mind to drift wherever it wants to go or you could say you allow the mind to be 'natural' and you simply watch what the mind is doing. This does not mean that there is no longer any object of awareness. you are still aware of 'things' but you you are not actively keeping the awareness on a specific object and you do not bring the awareness back to the object when it drifts away.

@@insalubriousdithyramb1742 Hey. I commented on this a few months ago so i had to listen to the video again to remind myself. At the start, the instruction is to focus only on sensations in the body, so this is shinay with an object. here you are being asked to focus on one thing, which is sensations in the body. at the same time you have some awareness of thinking as well as the potential to get lost in thoughts and forget the sensations in the body. all you need to do is remember the sensations in the body. everything else is ok. thoughts, feelings, distractions, sounds.... Everything is fine, so long as you remember the sensations in the body and when you notice that the mind has wandered and you have forgotten the sensations in your body, you bring the mind back. The instructions then ask you to focus on sounds or smells and the same thing goes. it's shinay with an object because you focus on one object, notice when you are lost and have forgotten the object and then you bring the mind back. "Just bring your mind back to sounds" means just realise again that you can hear sounds. Gradually you are being asked to be aware of any phenomenon. This is still shinay with an object but you can be aware of any phenomenon. so you can allow the mind to hear a sound, then notice a sensation, then a thought. "you can expand your awareness..." means you can be more and more inclusive in terms of what you are aware of. you can be aware of the subtle knowing that you occupy space and that space surrounds you. This is quite subtle but just have the intention to try and be aware of the space around yourself and then the space around all phenomenon. it's the space of awareness. rinpoche compares this to thoughts and feelings (and all objects) being like clouds in the sky of awareness. then he says "go beyond the clouds", which is an instruction to just be with awareness. so here the meditation becomes shinay without an object. but rinpoche has gradually brought us there. just be with awareness itself. awareness is knowing and not the object that it is known. so recognise (that you are) awareness. here rinpoche says "don't worry you won't get lost". if that instruction doesn't mean anything to you, don't worry about it. and then the instruction is to just rest the mind. this does not mean letting go of the recognition of awareness. it means relaxing in awareness. rinpoche compares this to physically resting after a long hike or other exercise. when we sit down to relax after heavy exercise, we just let go and rest. this is how we relax the mind in awareness. again, having the intention to do this is all that is needed. we don't know how to do it, so we try and see what happens. no need to get worried about whether we are doing it or not. rinpoche then explains a common experience of meditation. at first, we are not used to staying with awareness and the mind can become bored and restless. when we rest in awareness we begin to see many many thoughts and feelings bubbling away. (rinpoche sometimes calls this 'the waterfall experience' as opposed to a calm lake for example). the instruction is just be and stay with the awareness of these thoughts and feelings. to let the "blah blah blah" do it's thing and be aware of it all. so "let them come and let them go". we may get lost in them and that's fine. as soon as we notice we are lost we bring ourselves back. another common experience is when we don't notice anything at all. the mind feels like the surface of calm lake and more and more spacious. this is called non-conceptual state and as rinpoche says, it may only last a few seconds before we begin to notice thoughts and emotions again. both states, the "blah blah blah" state and 'non-conceptual state', are fine. we tend to prefer and want the latter and so we have desire and aversion (two of the three poisons, the other being ignorance of self). the point here though is that we stay with awareness of experience, whether the experience is "blah blah blah" or 'non-conceptual state'. this is how to overcome desire and aversion. by staying with awareness. so rinpoche has taken us through a journey to deeper levels of awareness. at some point you cross over from shinay with an object to shinay without an object. finally rinpoche reminds us to bring this practice into our daily lives as much as possible, which is an essential instruction. he also hints at the next stages in meditation, which is to recognise love, compassion and finally wisdom. this is my understanding. hope it helps :)
